When a special day is coming up — an anniversary, a birthday, something with someone you care about — the first question is always, "Where should we go to set the mood and eat something really good?" Pasta or steak felt a bit predictable this time, so I went looking for something different and upscale: a pork omakase. That's how I ended up at Don Tamguso.

Cutting to the chase — the food, the atmosphere, and the little thoughtful touches all completely won me over. It's genuinely hard to beat as a date spot near Magok Station for a special occasion. Let me walk you through every glorious moment of the dinner course.

What the Don Tamguso dining room looks like
Tucked inside a building near Magok Station, Don Tamguso grabs your attention from the entrance with soft lighting and a modern, polished interior. It feels almost like being invited into a secret lab or an upscale dining lounge — a private, hushed mood that hit us the second we opened the door. We both went, "Wow, this atmosphere is amazing!"

What comes in the Don Tamguso pork dinner course
With a happy little flutter of anticipation, the actual dinner course began. With every plate that came out, the staff gently explained the cut, the cooking method, and the best way to enjoy it — making the whole meal feel like being taken care of, start to finish.

Chestnut and button mushroom soup
Soup (chestnut, button mushroom, fresh cream) — the opening dish drew an instant sigh of satisfaction. Sweet, nutty chestnut and deep mushroom flavor melted into the smooth cream, warming us right up. The texture was rich yet creamy — a perfect starter for an empty stomach.

Dried persimmon and prosciutto salad
Salad (dried persimmon, orange, apple, basil, prosciutto) — this colorful, vibrant-looking salad combined chewy sweet dried persimmon with tangy orange, crisp apple, and fragrant basil to wake up the appetite. Thin, salty slices of prosciutto rounded it out into a perfect sweet-salty-tangy balance.

White ragu lasagna
Lasagna (shiitake mushroom, white ragu, mozzarella, smoky sauce) — between the chewy lasagna sheets was a rich white ragu sauce simmered down with chewy shiitake mushrooms. Stretchy, savory mozzarella cheese topped with a smoky house sauce made this one an explosion of smoke and umami with no room to feel heavy.

Pork tenderloin with shabu gyoza
Main 1 (shabu gyoza, tenderloin, button mushroom, sun-dried tomato) — the real main-course action begins here. The pork tenderloin, crisp outside and juicy pink inside, melted in the mouth with just a touch of salt. The moist, mild shabu gyoza (dumplings), the juicy grilled mushroom, and the sweet-tart sun-dried tomato gave this dish plenty of textural variety with no risk of getting monotonous.

Minari pork belly with tom yum sauce
Main 2 (pork belly, minari [water dropwort], Sichuan pepper, cumin, tom yum) — the most original and memorable of the two mains. Crisp, savory grilled pork belly came piled high with fragrant, crunchy minari. The spicy kick of Sichuan pepper and cumin, plus the exotic tang and heat of a light tom yum sauce, cut perfectly through the pork's richness.

The select course: Don Tamguso's signature burger
Select Course (Signature Burger or Signature Risotto) — you get to choose based on your taste, and we went with the "Signature Burger," a juicy house-made patty with sweetly caramelized onion and a lovely hint of maple syrup and bourbon. The "Signature Risotto," with Wando abalone, chewy barley, fragrant bangpungnamul (glehnia root herb) and Grana Padano cheese, is also a popular pick — I'm already planning to try it next time. This was the highlight of the whole Magok Station date, and it delivered beyond expectations.

Dessert of the day
Dessert (dessert of the day) — after all that food, a clean, refreshing dessert put a sweet final period on the meal. There's also a review event running right now: write a Naver receipt review or a Catch Table photo review and get the chef's signature dessert — definitely worth joining!
