Incheon mul-hoe restaurant in Guwol-dong: Veteran General Fish Market
In short
Veteran General Fish Market Incheon Guwol Branch is a seafood restaurant in Guwol-dong, Namdong, Incheon, open daily from 11:00 until 3:00 the next morning. Visiting with her mother, the writer used the table order system for raw shrimp sashimi and mul-hoe (cold raw fish soup), and the shrimp heads came back to the table as a butter grill. The mul-hoe stayed cold to the last spoonful thanks to the ice in the bowl, and the self-serve bar let them fry their own kimchi pancake.

Hi, it's Lovely! I came out for sashimi with my mom after a while~

I was trying to decide what to eat and ended up craving raw shrimp, which is in season right now, so I looked up raw shrimp restaurants in Incheon! This time I had a great meal at Veteran General Fish Market Incheon Guwol Branch!

The fish tanks and the seafood origin board
At Veteran General Fish Market Incheon Guwol Branch, live raw shrimp are swimming right by the entrance in the fish tank, along with squid and various other fish — the moment I walked in, I could already tell everything would be fresh!

Whenever I go to a sashimi restaurant, I tend to check the fish tank first~ Seeing the raw shrimp still alive and moving got me even more excited! There was also an origin labeling board off to one side, listing the origin of each item precisely — really helpful when deciding what to order~

The interior had an open-kitchen layout and felt clean overall. It was a comfortable spot to sit and eat with my mom.

We got a table and ordered mul-hoe and raw shrimp sashimi via table order~!

Frying your own kimchi pancake at the self-serve bar
Veteran General Fish Market Incheon Guwol Branch also has a self-serve bar where you can help yourself to basic side dishes~ Kimchi and various banchan (side dishes) were laid out!

I was surprised that you can actually fry your own kimchi pancake there! There were two self-serve stations, and when we arrived both were being used, so we waited a bit until things quieted down before using one!
It was fun frying it up warm ourselves, and it made a nice light bite while we waited for the sashimi~

The drink fridge was stocked with all kinds of alcohol that pair well with seafood and sashimi — paradise for anyone who likes to drink at Veteran General Fish Market Incheon Guwol Branch!

We started on the seaweed soup and salad that came as side dishes, and then the mul-hoe and shrimp sashimi we'd been waiting for arrived!

Raw shrimp sashimi, then shrimp heads grilled in butter
The raw shrimp sashimi at Veteran General Fish Market Incheon Guwol Branch looked plump and springy just by sight, and it really was — chewy texture, super fresh. Maybe because it's in season, there was even a subtle sweetness, so my mom and I kept picking at it saying how good it was~! I was glad I'd gone looking for a raw shrimp restaurant in Incheon!
Raw shrimp sashimi is great on its own, but it would be a shame to just toss the heads~ The leftover heads come back out as a butter grill, with a strong savory aroma — really delicious. Finishing off with the heads after the sashimi felt like fully enjoying the whole plate.

Mul-hoe served over ice, and why we picked it over al-tang
Honestly, I went back and forth between mul-hoe and al-tang (spicy fish roe stew) when picking a menu. I wanted the warm al-tang, but the weather was hot and my mom said she wanted mul-hoe today, so we went with that~ In the end, I was really glad we did! It came with ice mixed in, so it stayed refreshingly cold from start to finish! Usually with mul-hoe the ice melts as you eat and it gets less refreshing, but this one stayed cold all the way to the last spoonful!

The broth wasn't just cold — it had real depth of flavor, so my spoon kept going back in~ Alternating between the raw shrimp sashimi and the mul-hoe cleansed the palate and the combination worked really well~! My mom was satisfied she'd chosen mul-hoe, which made me happy too! Next time I'd like to try other menu items, but I think I'll keep thinking about this mul-hoe!
Final verdict on dinner for two with mom
That day my mom and I happily shared raw shrimp sashimi and mul-hoe~ We started by watching the live raw shrimp in the fish tank, then had our fill of springy shrimp sashimi, savory butter grill, and refreshing mul-hoe~ Above all, the food was fresh and delicious, and my mom was happy too.
We left saying we'd try other seafood menu items next time! If you're craving seasonal raw shrimp in Incheon, or looking for a good mul-hoe restaurant in Incheon or a sashimi restaurant in Guwol-dong, this place is worth a visit! We're planning to go back soon to try something different~!
