Jang-an-dong shabu-shabu with fresh sujebi noodles: Shabu Torang
In short
Shabu Torang Jang-an Direct Branch is a solo-friendly shabu-shabu restaurant on Janghan-ro in Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul, where the house Shabu Torang Shabu starts at 7,900 won. The basic pot was ordered with added beef chuck, a mixed topping plate and fresh sujebi (hand-torn noodles), while the spicy pot added thin-sliced beef belly, so the two broths could be compared side by side. Meat and vegetables can be added to match your appetite and the after-dishes are cheap, making Shabu Torang a five-out-of-five repeat visit for budget solo dining in Jang-an-dong.

What we ordered: basic shabu with beef chuck, spicy shabu with beef belly
Shabu Torang Shabu — added meat (beef chuck) — mixed toppings — fresh sujebi (hand-torn noodle) dumplings
Spicy Shabu-shabu — added meat (beef belly) — added meat and vegetables (beef belly) — mixed toppings
Cider (Korean lemon-lime soda)
We ordered one basic shabu-shabu and one spicy shabu-shabu so we could compare the two flavors.

How the basic Shabu Torang Shabu tastes: clean and mild
First up, the basic shabu-shabu! I added extra meat to mine. There's just something fun about cooking meat to your liking in the broth, haha.

Eating the meat, vegetables and various toppings together made for a fully satisfying meal, and since it's eaten with broth, it was perfect for the chillier weather. Shabu-shabu itself isn't a strongly flavored dish, so if you want something clean and light, the basic menu is a good choice.

The spicy shabu-shabu broth, for bold-flavor lovers
Compared to the basic shabu-shabu, the broth is clearly spicier, so it should suit anyone who likes a bolder flavor.

Meat and vegetable add-ons and cheap after-dishes
The great thing about Shabu Torang is that you can add meat or vegetables and build the meal exactly how you want. Since we like meat, we added extra meat, but if you want a lighter meal you could just add vegetables — nice to have that flexibility! Also, once you finish the main dish, you can order pasta, risotto or tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) as an after-dish at low prices, so adding more feels less of a burden.
