Lately, I’ve felt especially low on energy, so I went looking for a proper restorative meal and visited Cheonsangae Jangeoga Myeonmok Sagajeong Branch. This freshwater eel specialty restaurant sits between Sagajeong Station and Myeonmok Station, and the dish I tried was charcoal-grilled freshwater eel with Seolhwa mushrooms and wild ginseng—its name alone sounds like serious restorative food.

Eel is wonderful anytime, but freshwater eel properly grilled over charcoal is definitely different, isn’t it? What makes this place stand out is the combination of eel, Seolhwa mushrooms, and cultivated wild ginseng roots, so I wanted to recommend it to anyone looking for a restorative meal.

Restaurant atmosphere and self-service bar

When I stepped inside, the clean, relaxed atmosphere stood out before anything else—it felt different from a typical grilled-eel restaurant. Eel is often something you go out for with family when you want a nourishing meal, or when you’re taking your parents out, so the atmosphere matters too.

There was a self-service bar on one side of the restaurant, so we could comfortably help ourselves to side dishes.

We ordered the Seolhwa wild ginseng eel lunch special for two.

The basic side dishes arrived: shredded ginger, pickled chili peppers, and cultivated wild ginseng roots. Then the stars of the meal, the Seolhwa mushrooms and eel, came out. We got two incredibly plump eels.

The charcoal was brought over too, and now it was time to wait for everything to cook deliciously.

A staff member grilled it for us, so we could eat comfortably. The anticipation shot up the moment the eel went onto the grill!

If you love eel, it’s hard to resist watching those thick freshwater eel fillets turn golden over intense charcoal heat.

Thick freshwater eel over charcoal

Eel is an oily fish, so if it is grilled poorly, it can feel greasy or the skin texture can be disappointing. Here, though, it was cooked thoroughly over charcoal, leaving the outside savory and the flesh inside moist and tender.

And especially that subtle charcoal aroma on the eel! That’s the charm of eel grilled directly over true charcoal. They put the Seolhwa mushrooms on the grill too, just briefly, and it looked like everything was done. Time to start eating. I mixed eel sauce with shredded ginger and cultivated wild ginseng roots. And I did a little warm-up with the doenjang-jjigae (fermented soybean paste stew) served on the side.

Eel and side-dish combinations

I first had a little taste of the eoriguljeot, a salted oyster condiment.

Grilled eel served with salt

Above all, the well-grilled eel was so delicious even with just a light dip in salt—clean-tasting and wonderfully savory.

Put grilled Seolhwa mushroom and eoriguljeot on a piece of eel, and such a happy harmony unfolds in your mouth. I added some pickled chili peppers too. Eel is also great wrapped up in a big ssam (leaf wrap) for a satisfyingly full bite! The eel was so substantial that we really enjoyed it.

The cultivated wild ginseng roots were bitter, but I thought they paired remarkably well with the eel.

Side order of eel soup

A filling finish with eel soup and scorched rice

This was the eel soup we ordered on the side. We ordered it as a substantial meal item, and it perfectly filled in any lingering gap in fullness after the grilled eel.

Try mixing rice into the eel soup! It was a satisfying meal and genuinely restorative food that warmed me from the inside.

Potatoes grilled over charcoal

The potatoes grilled alongside the charcoal were a special treat. And you have to finish with scorched rice, right? Top the scorched rice with eoriguljeot and wow, it’s delicious. The filling, nutty scorched rice made for a perfect finish. The charcoal-grilled freshwater eel with Seolhwa mushrooms and wild ginseng that I tried this time was impressive because I could fully enjoy the eel’s savory flavor and charcoal aroma along with the mushrooms and cultivated wild ginseng roots. The eel itself was thick and filling, and eating it with all the different accompaniments made it feel like a truly complete meal. In particular, if you are looking for a restorative meal with your parents rather than a meat dish, or a menu for a family gathering or company dinner, this would be a great fit. On a day when the weather is turning chilly, when your stamina feels especially low, or when you want a hearty meal out with family after a long time—how about nourishing yourself with a piece of freshwater eel, golden from the charcoal grill?
