Buk-gu, Gwangju pho for three with onion pickle sauce mix: Wolmidang
In short
Wolmidang Gwangju Chonnam National University Branch is a Vietnamese pho restaurant in Buk-gu, Gwangju, near the Buk-gu Office and the back gate of Chonnam National University. Three of us ordered two beef brisket pho (11,000 won each), a soy-grilled bulgogi rice bowl (12,000 won) and sweet potato cha gio, then mixed hoisin sauce and hot chili 1:1 into the free onion pickle. Noodles, bean sprouts and onion pickle all come with free refills, and cilantro and spicy minced chili cost nothing extra, so Wolmidang is easy to eat exactly to your own taste.

Where is Wolmidang Gwangju Chonnam National University Branch, and where do you park?
Wolmidang is close to the Buk-gu Office and the back gate of Chonnam National University, so it's a convenient spot for lunch. Parking is tough around the back gate, so I was happy to find that they offer 1 hour of validated parking at Megabox.

Free refills on noodles and bean sprouts??
It's great for anyone who finds the standard portion not quite enough — you can easily ask for more.

Seating and the sauces on every table at Wolmidang
Maybe because it was lunchtime, the place was packed. There are tables for 2 and 4, plus counter seats near the entrance, which would also be good for solo dining.

On one side of the table, spicy chili sauce and sweet hoisin sauce were already set out, and you could add cilantro or spicy minced chili to suit your taste — no extra charge for any of it!!
Love that.

Wolmidang menu and what three of us ordered
They have basic pho as well as spicy pho, bún chả, rice dishes, and sides like cha gio (Vietnamese spring rolls) and shrimp toast.
Sweet potato cha gio 3pc (₩0.3) Beef brisket pho (₩1.1) x2 Soy-grilled bulgogi rice bowl (₩1.2) Zero-sugar cola (₩0.2)
There were three of us, so this is what we ordered!

They brought out the cola before the food, and the paper cup design was so cute. There's even a little tail detail on the back.
Adorable.

How to eat Wolmidang's pho: onion pickle + hoisin sauce + hot chili
While waiting for our food, I read the instructions for enjoying the pho properly! It's a bit unusual — you mix the house onion pickle with hoisin sauce and hot chili sauce, then eat it alongside the pho.

This is the onion pickle that comes as standard. It's also a free refill, so if you run out, you can just ask for more.

As recommended, I added hoisin sauce and hot chili sauce to the onion pickle at a 1:1 ratio.
Mix it up. I like hoisin sauce so I added a little extra of that — hoisin sauce wins.

Soy-grilled bulgogi rice bowl
The soy-grilled bulgogi rice bowl came out first, along with a side of broth to go with it. The bulgogi had that proper grilled flavor and wasn't tough at all. With a fried egg on top too, it looked as good as it tasted ✌🏻
You've got to pile rice, bulgogi, and onion pickle together in one bite — that's the way to eat it.

Beef brisket pho: broth and noodles
The pho came piled generously with meat, looking really appetizing. The broth is the basic pho style, but it had a bit of a spicy kick, kind of like cheongyang chili peppers. Slightly sharp and really tasty.

I piled the meat on top like this to eat. The noodles weren't overcooked either — just the right texture.

Following the tip for enjoying the pho, I added the onion pickle mixture, and the spicy-sweet flavor kept it from getting monotonous. Kind of like how kimchi works?
So good. A real standout dish.

Sweet potato cha gio (Vietnamese fried spring rolls)
I tried this on a friend's recommendation that it was delicious, and it was — super crispy on the outside with a sweet potato filling inside that felt almost like dessert. Really good. But it's really hot inside, so be careful haha..

By the exit, there was candy to freshen your mouth on the way out, which felt like a nice touch to the end of the meal.

Is Wolmidang in Buk-gu, Gwangju worth it?
Overall, Wolmidang Chonnam National University Branch was clean and satisfying for a filling meal! The pho had plenty of meat and a clean broth that was really tasty, and I loved that noodles and bean sprouts were free to refill. I also liked being able to customize with sauces, cilantro, and spicy minced chili to taste. Parking is a bit tricky around the back gate, so the parking support was a nice bonus too.
