Solo lunch pho near Chonnam Univ, Gwangju: Wolmidang beef brisket
In short
Wolmidang Gwangju Chonnam National University Branch is a pho restaurant in Buk-gu, Gwangju, in the alley across from the Buk-gu Health Center. Visited for lunch, the writer tried the beef brisket pho (차돌양지쌀국수) and bún chả (분짜) — the meat had no gamey smell, the broth was clean, and free refills of noodles, bean sprouts, cilantro and broth made it a filling solo meal. If pho isn't your thing, the bún chả is worth trying instead.

Today I'm introducing a pho spot near Chonnam National University that's great for solo dining: "Wolmidang" :)
Location and hours of Wolmidang Gwangju Chonnam National University Branch
- 🏠 Wolmidang
- 📌 Address: 62 Uchi-ro, 1st floor, Buk-gu, Gwangju, South Korea
- ⏰ Hours: 11:00–20:45
- 🅿️ Parking: available at the Megabox parking lot
It's located in the alley across from the Buk-gu Health Center, close to Chonnam National University, so quite a few people come here to eat alone. I visited at lunchtime, and maybe because of that there were a lot of office workers too. The road in front of the store is currently under construction, so it was a bit chaotic.
Exterior

Outside there's a waiting bench and a sign out front, so it was easy to check the menu before going in. Parking is available for 1 hour in the Megabox building, so even if you have a car you can visit comfortably. Above all, Wolmidang is already a famous pho spot, so I visited with confidence.
An interior and kiosk system that make solo dining easy

The interior had about 10 tables of 4, which works well both for eating alone and for coming with others. Each table has its own kiosk for ordering and payment, so you can order and pay right away. When I had questions, the staff answered kindly, so it was easy to ask.
Menu and free refills of noodles, bean sprouts, cilantro, and broth

The menu was more varied than I expected, and since noodles, bean sprouts, cilantro, and broth are all free refills, this place seems great for solo dining even for big, hungry guys.

They had written out how to enjoy the dish best, so even as a pho first-timer I could enjoy it properly. When I made the onion sauce, I liked adding a lot of hoisin sauce. (Taste it and adjust to your preference — it'll be even better!!)
Bún chả — good even if you don't like pho

Honestly, I have strong feelings about pho and don't really seek it out, but this dish was easy for anyone to like, no strong opinions needed. The meat was already seasoned, so it didn't have that distinctive pho spice smell, and the sweet-and-salty harmony of the meat and noodles was great. First, if you pour about 3–4 spoonfuls of the sauce that comes with it over the noodles, the seasoning comes out just right. (The paper says 1–2 spoonfuls.) The cabbage and tomato that come alongside were also nice to eat with it.
If you're not a fan of pho, you have to try the bún chả!! It doesn't taste like pho at all — it's more like soft, chewy noodles with meat. (Kind of like eating meat with naengmyeon, cold noodles?)
Beef brisket pho — clean, no gamey smell

The pho had no fishy or gamey smell at all and was clean-tasting. The meat was mild and the bean sprouts were cooked just right, making for a good balance. A friend who's eaten a lot of pho said this was on the tasty side. (I don't usually go for the spice or flavor of pho itself, so it was hard for me to describe, haha.) I thought — this is a place that's good at avoiding that gamey meat smell.
And the free refill aspect is a real plus — pho noodles slurp down fast so you get hungry again quickly and can feel like you didn't get enough, but refilling the noodles or bean sprouts makes it satisfying.

You can also add extra chili paste (dadaegi), so both people who like it spicy and people who like it mild should be satisfied.
Overall verdict

The menu has options beyond pho that anyone can enjoy without strong preferences, so it's a good spot to come with a friend or acquaintance who doesn't eat pho. And the pho itself was much tastier and cleaner-tasting than other places, which I liked. The staff were kind too, and there were candies at the entrance for after your meal, which left me satisfied overall. If you're looking for a pho place near Chonnam National University, it's worth a visit.
