Songpa Korean BBQ with minari sauce for beef gopchang: Jinseong

In short

Jinseong Hanwoo Gopchang Bangi Direct Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Songpa, Seoul, serving individual portions of Korean beef offal. We had two portions of beef gopchang with house-made kimchi, minari sauce, complimentary steamed egg, and 9,000-won kkakdugi yangbap. Verdict: a relaxed pick for gopchang and cold beer with a friend.

Jinseong Hanwoo Gopchang in Bangi-dong: atmosphere and waiting

My friend and I are such big gopchang fans that we come back to this gopchang restaurant regularly. It is a place I want to recommend because you can enjoy everything from its signature scallion kimchi and complimentary steamed egg to its irresistibly tasty fried rice.

It is in the dining alley between Mongchontoseong Station and Jamsil Station, so it is easy to reach by subway. Hours differ by day, so check before you head out.

Jinseong Hanwoo Gopchang Bangi Direct Branch really stands out once you enter Bangi-dong's dining alley. Even on the weekday evening we visited, it already had quite a lot of customers.

If there is a wait, write your name on the board by the entrance and wait nearby. There were already lots of people waiting that day, too.

The restaurant was neither especially big nor small, but it was full of groups enjoying gopchang and drinks together. The warm lighting added to the cozy feel, even among the many restaurants in Bangi-dong's dining alley.

A poster boldly says, “More, please!!” for the pickled minari-and-garlic sauce, while the concise menu and best sellers hang on the wall. The simple lineup centers on three cuts—hanwoo gopchang (Korean beef small intestine), hanwoo daechang (beef large intestine), and hanwoo makchang (beef abomasum)—plus kkakdugi yangbap and janchi guksu (banquet noodle soup). Unlike other gopchang restaurants, there is no assorted-offal platter; you can order individual cuts, which seems to help it keep its standing as a great gopchang spot in Bangi-dong.

The clean round stainless-steel table was set with cold water, scissors, tongs, utensils, and the house special sauce.

Kkakdugi yangbap (fried rice with diced radish kimchi and tripe) is a must-order for me whenever I come to Jinseong Hanwoo Gopchang. The tangy kkakdugi and the fun texture of the tripe make it especially good.

Hanwoo gopchang and accompanying side dishes

Jinseong Hanwoo Gopchang confidently serves three kinds of house-made kimchi along with seasoned garlic chives. Hanwoo gopchang can be a rich dish, but eating it with Jinseong Hanwoo Gopchang's house-made kimchi cuts through that richness and makes the flavor even better.

The late-summer weather made us crave a cold beer, so we started with beer before the gopchang arrived.

Beer lovers will totally relate to that properly chilled temperature. Jinseong Hanwoo Gopchang Bangi Direct Branch has beer that is cold all the way through.

Complimentary steamed egg

The complimentary steamed egg is another reason to return to Jinseong Hanwoo Gopchang Bangi Direct Branch! It is a popular free side, including with families who enjoy it with rice.

We ordered two portions of beef gopchang. Once you order, a staff member comes over and cuts it for you.

Having the gopchang grilled for us meant my friend and I could relax over a beer at this Bangi-dong gopchang spot.

Beef gopchang and sides on the grill

Eating it with the bean sprouts, potatoes, rice cakes, kimchi, and seasoned garlic chives grilled alongside it definitely made it feel less rich.

The taste of gopchang dipped in the special minari sauce is exactly what makes you go, “This is why I come to Jinseong Hanwoo Gopchang!”

Watching the gopchang cook on the grill made me want to eat it quickly, but Jinseong Hanwoo Gopchang serves it par-cooked, so it does not take long to grill and you can dig in soon.

Kkakdugi yangbap topped with a soft-fried egg

Finish with ₩9,000 kkakdugi yangbap

The kkakdugi yangbap has pleasantly chewy tripe to bite into. It also has plenty of minced garlic to settle the richness from the gopchang, and the soft-fried egg was a stroke of genius.

Break the egg, mix it all together, and somehow the drinks just keep going down.

A plate of tangy, spicy kkakdugi yangbap

It is nicely spicy and tangy, and for ₩9,000 the portion is really generous, so it is a dish I always end up ordering.

A good Bangi-dong spot for gopchang and drinks with a friend

If you are looking for a gopchang restaurant in Bangi-dong's dining alley, Jinseong Hanwoo Gopchang Bangi Direct Branch is worth a stop. The hanwoo gopchang itself is delicious, but personally, the scallion kimchi and minari sauce that pair so well with it are what I remember most!

Because the staff grill it for you, you can eat comfortably, and the complimentary steamed egg makes it a nice setting for drinks with a friend. Above all, the kkakdugi yangbap we ordered at the end neatly cut through the richness after the gopchang, so it is a menu item I would order again next time, too.

It gets enough customers to have a wait even on weekday evenings, so I recommend avoiding peak mealtimes or visiting with a wait in mind. Keep it in mind if you want to properly enjoy gopchang, cold beer, and fried rice in Bangi-dong's dining alley.
