Yangpyeong hanjeongsik for two: 8-course meal at Ochan Hoedong

In short

Ochan Hoedong is a Korean course restaurant in Gangsang-myeon, Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi, cooking with homemade fermented vinegar and aged soy sauce. A two-person reservation for the 'Ochan Hoedong' 8-course menu, ₩59,000 per person, ran from a gim-bugak starter through seasonal porridge, acorn jelly with mustard greens, Yangpyeong mushroom japchae, soy-sauce-aged Korean beef tteokgalbi, 10-year-aged doenjang stew with lotus leaf rice, and a strawberry vinegar dessert. With private rooms and refined plating, it suits a parents' first meeting or a meal for elders.

The vibe — private rooms and all — is it good for a parents' meeting?

Parking is easy, right in the space in front of the restaurant.

The interior had a bright, warm wood-tone mood. There were private rooms too, and the space felt comfortable enough to be perfect for a gathering on a special occasion.

I could clearly see why this place is so loved as a spot for parents' meetings and anniversaries.

The plating was elegant, styled with Korean objects that felt like exactly the kind of place older family members would love.

Ochan Hoedong says they take the time to brew their own liquor, vinegar, and soy sauce in-house, adding these to their cooking.

The course lineup and menu

The course menu was systematically built from a welcome dish all the way to dessert, and there were three course options: Ochan Hoedong, Jinsuseonchang, and Gukbinmanchan.

You can also order à la carte dishes along with liquor by the glass or bottle.

I reserved the Ochan Hoedong course for two people. It was ₩59,000, and the Ochan Hoedong course itself is made up of 8 courses total.

The welcome dish, seasonal porridge, and today's salad were all served together on one table.

The 8-course meal, one dish at a time

Course 1. Welcome dish

Gim-bugak served as the welcome dish
Close-up of the crispy gim-bugak plate

Crispy, clean-tasting gim-bugak (fried seaweed crisps). They were crunchy and grease-free, so not the least bit heavy, with a smooth finish and a mild, savory flavor that impressed me. They were seasoned just salty enough to feel healthy and would honestly work as a snack alongside a drink — the kind of texture you'd want to keep nearby to keep nibbling.

Course 2. Seasonal porridge

A warm porridge to ease an empty stomach. Made from finely ground squash, chestnuts, pine nuts, peanuts, and various other nuts, it was nutty and smooth — a comforting starter for the stomach.

Course 3. Yangpyeong today's-field salad

Yangpyeong today's-field salad

Crisp vegetables with a refreshing dressing. Made with same-day ingredients, the salad had clean, crunchy vegetables throughout, and the dressing's salty-tangy balance did a great job of waking up the appetite.

Course 4. Fermented vinegar acorn jelly with mustard greens, with 3-year-aged rosemary vinegar

The sesame-seasoned acorn jelly sitting atop crisp vegetables had been lightly dried, giving it a distinctively springy, chewy texture that stood out. With vegetables and tangy fermented vinegar mixed in, plus a sharp kick from the mustard, it was a fresh and vibrant dish.

In particular, the owner brought out a fermented vinegar they'd aged themselves in a clay jar for 3 years to go with it — drizzling it on cleared my palate and left my stomach feeling settled, like it aided digestion 😊

Course 5. Yangpyeong assorted mushroom japchae

Made with mushrooms, one of Yangpyeong's local specialties, this dish really brought out the mushrooms' aroma and chewy texture along with tender meat. The glass noodles weren't too salty, coming through clean and chewy, and paired wonderfully with the mushrooms.

Course 6. Soy-sauce-aged Korean beef tteokgalbi

Bite-sized Korean beef tteokgalbi plating

Mouthwatering just to look at — the Korean beef tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patty) came with golden-seared mushrooms, eggplant, and zucchini, plus fresh sliced cherry tomatoes on the side. The rich flavor of the Korean beef combined with the aged soy sauce for a real depth of savoriness, and rather than a sweet glaze, it had a clean, nutty, refined flavor — really excellent 😋 The bite-sized pieces made it easy and tidy to eat, and it looked great too.

Course 7. 10-year-aged doenjang stew with lotus leaf rice

Doenjang stew and side dishes set on the table
Stir-fried anchovies with chili and namul side dishes

A neatly arranged spread of side dishes — stir-fried anchovies with chili, cucumber kimchi (oi-sobagi), chwinamul (aster greens), zucchini, and stir-fried eggplant — served alongside the doenjang (soybean paste) stew made for a filling meal, the perfect finish to a hanjeongsik course.

Rice wrapped in a lotus leaf

The moment I unwrapped the lotus leaf rice, the faint fragrance of the leaf came through, with sweet pumpkin, jujube, and rice grains inside.

The 10-year-aged countryside doenjang was excellent — not your basic doenjang, but one with a mild, clean depth that clearly comes from years of aging. With tofu, mushrooms, and zucchini inside, the fresh textures added extra savory richness and depth.

Course 8. Dessert

For dessert, we got 3-year-aged handmade strawberry fermented vinegar and tangerine-flavored gwajeul (a traditional Korean rice snack).

Handmade strawberry fermented vinegar and tangerine gwajeul dessert

The handmade strawberry fermented vinegar had the fresh, fragrant aroma of real strawberries, sweet and tangy like strawberry jam, and it left my palate feeling refreshed and clean. The tangerine gwajeul had a chewy-crisp texture — a clean, not-too-sweet dessert that I really liked. ❤️Best way to end the course❤️
