Gimbap-free trip: shrimp-head butter fry at Yeongjae Susan, Songpa

In short

Yeongjae Susan is a sashimi and seafood stall on the first floor of Garak Mall's sales building in Songpa, Seoul. The writer took home a small Jeongwang Assorted Sashimi (₩65,000) with gizzard shad, flounder and red seabream, plus 500g of live shrimp (₩15,500), then turned the leftover shrimp heads into a butter fry back home. Fixed prices, a clean logo shopping bag, and generous packaging make this a solid pick for anyone wanting to take sashimi home from Garak Market.

Takeout sashimi and live shrimp from Yeongjae Susan at Garak Market

This one's partly my own money too!! I'd been craving sashimi for a while and my Instagram Reels feed was flooded with live shrimp, so I headed straight to Garak Market haha

The seafood market is right there as soon as you get off at Garak Market Station

If you get off at the bus stop called Family Town, you can also enter through this side gate

How to get to Yeongjae Susan

Come out of Exit 2 at Garak Market Station, go in through Entrance 6 of the Garak Mall seafood market, head to the first floor, and look for Unit C-10, Yeongjae Susan

Fixed-price menu, sizes from mini to XL

Yeongjae Susan is a partner store of Mermaid King Pirates, so the menu board has set prices in advance — fixed pricing. The board lists sashimi types and prices by size, so you don't have to ask about prices one by one on the spot, and you can just pick what you want straight off the board! It was especially handy that the menu was split into mini / small / medium / large / XL sizes, so it was easy to choose based on how many people you're feeding

Looking into the tanks, there was such a variety — live shrimp, abalone, lobster, king crab, you name it

Cute little shrimp

What I ordered

  • Jeongwang Assorted Sashimi (small) — ₩65,000
  • Live shrimp 500g — ₩15,500

TIP 💡 If you're planning to buy live shrimp, check Naver Reservations before you go to see if there's a coupon available! I used a 20% discount coupon on my 500g of shrimp haha. I ordered it to go instead of eating there

What was in the takeout package

Straight to pickup! I was surprised at how nice the packaging looked 😮

When you get takeout at Yeongjae Susan, they pack everything neatly into their own branded shopping bag with the Yeongjae Susan logo on it. Along with the sashimi you get sauces like soy sauce and chogochujang, plus sides like pickled ginger, wasabi, and garlic to go with it

The shrimp were still alive even after I cut off the heads ㅜ brutal shrimp-peeling session, done!

Ah, so glossy and beautiful (but I forgot to remove the guts haha..)

Jeongwang Assorted Sashimi: gizzard shad, flounder, red seabream

A gorgeous in-season assorted platter to top it off!

The Jeongwang Assorted Sashimi is made up of gizzard shad, flounder, and red seabream!🐟 If you look at the photo, the white, translucent parts are the flounder, the pink and red-streaked parts are the red seabream, and the part with silvery skin still on is obviously the gizzard shad haha!

Gizzard shad sashimi with its shiny silver skin🐟 It has that distinctive nutty gizzard shad flavor, so it was great with chogochujang, soy sauce, and ssamjang all

Shrimp really is best dipped straight into chogochujang🦐💕

Properly enjoyed every kind

Shrimp-head butter fry with the leftovers

Pulled out some French butter that had been sitting in my fridge

Frying shrimp heads in French butter
Finished shrimp-head butter fry

Made shrimp-head butter fry and it was genuinely insane (in a good way)💕 this was seriously so good ㅜㅜ I'd originally bought ramyeon to cook with the leftover heads too, but I was way too full so I gave up on that

Today was great because there was such a variety of sashimi and I could pick the size I wanted, and most of all, I loved being able to enjoy it comfortably and generously at home☺️ The live shrimp were nice and plump too, and eating them together with the sashimi was such a good combo🦐💕

If you're looking for a place to take sashimi home from Garak Market, I recommend Yeongjae Susan!! :) Next time I'll have to take home a different assorted platter🐟🩷
