Songpa seafood restaurant for sashimi with parents: Yeongjae Susan
In short
Yeongjae Susan is a seafood shop at Garak Mall in Songpa, Seoul, where you can choose live fish sashimi and seafood. I took home the ₩65,000 small Nonggwang Cham sashimi platter for my parents, along with a generous spicy fish stew. Verdict: a satisfying family takeaway feast.

My parents love sashimi so much that, while wondering what to bring when I visited my family home, I came to Garak Market for the first time. There are so many sashimi shops at the seafood market, but I visited Yeongjae Susan, a popular spot at Garak Market. It is right beside Garak Market Station, so it is very easy to reach by public transit. Garak Market's seafood market is so famous that I had really wanted to visit at least once; maybe because I went on the weekend, the entire market was bustling with people and full of energy.

Choosing sashimi at Yeongjae Susan in Garak Market
When I got near the shop, fresh seafood and fish were being kept very cleanly in tanks. Everything was arranged for easy browsing, so it was great to take my time looking around and choosing. The owner also guided me kindly. Seeing the fresh sashimi fish right in front of me amid the lively seafood-market atmosphere made it even better.

The raw shrimp looks delicious too...

Looking over the displayed menu and sets, there was far more variety and value than I expected. There was practically everything, from all kinds of live-fish sashimi to seafood, so customers could choose to suit their tastes. In particular, there were lots of seasonal sashimi fish and substantial assorted sashimi sets. We chose the small Nonggwang Cham sashimi set, tailored around the fish my parents like.

Bluefin tuna, flounder, mullet, horse mackerel, croaker... there really was everything. I do not know seafood especially well, but there were so many things I had never seen before that I was really curious.

There is even a set with my beloved salmon. They also have king crab and snow crab.

It made me want to buy salmon next time too.

Oh, and it seemed there was a base ₩1,000 parking fee even if you only stopped by briefly. But they thoughtfully give you a parking discount voucher when you make a purchase...!

Nonggwang Cham sashimi brought home in chilled packaging
And even if you need to travel a long way after packing it up, I do not think there would be any problem at all. They packed it incredibly carefully with ice packs and an insulated bag, so I was able to bring it home fresh.

When I opened the insulated bag at home, I was happy that it had clearly stayed fresh.. The amount was generous enough for two to three people. Especially if you have the spicy fish stew too, you can get really full.

Fresh sashimi is best eaten right away, so I unpacked it immediately and enjoyed it with my parents.

The texture of large sea bass, large flounder, and large red seabream sashimi
Nonggwang Cham sashimi consists of large sea bass, large flounder, and large red seabream, with each fish sliced thickly and neatly. One bite gave it the pleasantly chewy texture of well-aged sashimi, with a subtle sweetness too—it was very appealing.

The large red seabream sashimi was especially the most popular. It was soft yet had just the right springiness, with a subtle nutty flavor and sweetness. The large flounder and large sea bass also had the proper chew of white fish and a gentle sweetness; they were so fresh and delicious.

The large sea bass was relatively cleaner and milder, while the large flounder was a little nuttier. Both had a nicely firm, chewy texture. Since the set was made up only of sashimi fish that are great to eat in summer, everything was such good quality.

Spicy fish stew loaded with fish meat and clams
While we ate the sashimi, we diligently cooked the maeuntang (spicy fish stew) too. They included plenty of bean sprouts, so it was really convenient—all I had to do was throw in every ingredient and let it boil.

Can you see this whole mound of ingredients...?

At first, the fish head being included so intact was a little scary haha, but once I looked, there was an incredible amount of meat on it. Usually, spicy fish stew often feels like you are only sucking the bones, but this one was truly loaded with fish meat. It was quickly ready after bubbling away while we ate the sashimi, and its nicely spicy, richly flavored broth was perfect for finishing the meal.

We were already full from the sashimi alone, but after clearing the rich spicy fish stew too, I honestly felt like I might burst. The overall amount was incredibly generous, and it was excellent value for money.

Oh, and there were lots of quite meaty clams as well—the spicy fish stew was practically a menu item in its own right. I had assumed it might be made from leftovers after preparing sashimi (though that is still tasty!), but this was genuinely substantial.
Yeongjae Susan is such a fresh, generously portioned sashimi spot in Garak Market! The small Nonggwang Cham sashimi set, with the chewy texture and subtle sweetness of large sea bass, large flounder, and large red seabream, and the generous spicy fish stew packed with clams and fish meat were both truly delicious. All the seafood was so fresh, so I highly recommend it if you are looking for a sashimi shop at Garak Market!
