Hello ʕっ'^'cʔ It was the day my friend and I planned to have dinner in Bangi-dong! I'd been craving meat for a while, so we went to Hongkyojip Jamsil in the Jamsil food alley. We ordered the thick premium thin-trimmed pork neck and pork belly, and the staff grilled everything from start to finish for us, so it was way more comfortable than I expected.

Exterior of Hongkyojip Jamsil in the Bangi-dong food alley

Hongkyojip is tucked inside the Bangi-dong food alley. The exterior is a bit more atmospheric than a typical Korean BBQ place, so it stood out even just walking by. We had reserved ahead for Thursday at 8:30pm.

CatchTable reservation kiosk at the entrance of Hongkyojip Jamsil

There was a CatchTable kiosk at the entrance.

Reservation status screen shown at the entrance

The reservation status was also displayed separately. There were quite a few reservations when we visited, so if you're planning to go in the evening, booking ahead seems like a good idea.

Inside the restaurant and the charcoal setup

Full view of the interior of Hongkyojip Jamsil
Dining hall with spacious tables
Atmospheric interior decor of the restaurant
Tables arranged with generous spacing
Seating at Hongkyojip Jamsil good for group dinners

The interior was bigger than I expected. The tables had plenty of space between them, so it looked good for both a dinner with a friend and a bigger group gathering or work dinner.

Chimney-like structure surrounding the grill plate

Also, each table had a chimney-like structure around the grill, which is something you don't usually see at Korean BBQ places. It matched the interior well and was kind of pretty haha.

Charcoal brazier placed on the table

The meat is cooked over charcoal. The staff puts in the charcoal first,

Grill plate set on top of the charcoal

and once the grill plate goes on top of that, you're officially ready to eat meat!

Menu and ordering — premium thin-trimmed pork neck starts at 2 servings

Menu board listing pork belly, five-layer pork belly, and pork neck

The menu has everything from single cuts like pork belly, five-layer pork belly, pork neck, and pork jowl, to set menus where you can try several cuts together. There were also plenty of side dishes that go well with meat, like crab miso stew, beef tallow soybean-paste rice, naengmyeon (cold noodles), and steamed egg.

What we ordered was

  • Premium thin-trimmed pork neck (2 servings)
  • Premium five-layer pork belly (1 serving)
  • Crab miso stew
  • 3 bowls of rice

For reference, the premium thin-trimmed pork neck comes in such a thick cut that you can't order just 1 serving on its own — it starts at 2 servings.

There was also a Naver receipt review event going on. If you write a review, you get to choose one of a peach tree highball, an apple tree highball, or steamed egg. You could pick your choice directly on the table order screen, so we went with cheddar cheese steamed egg haha.

Basic side dishes and self-serve bar

Table of basic side dishes including wild garlic and white kimchi

Ordering meat comes with a variety of basic side dishes too. There were several sides that go well with meat, like wild garlic (myeong-i namul), white kimchi, bracken fern, and bean sprout salad. I usually like eating meat plainly with just salt or ssamjang (Korean soybean paste dip), but here there was so much to combine that it was fun mixing and matching!

Self-serve bar for grabbing extra side dishes

It was convenient that you could freely grab more side dishes from the self-serve bar if you ran low.

Staff-grilled premium thin-trimmed pork neck and pork belly

Thick premium thin-trimmed pork neck placed on the grill

They put the premium thin-trimmed pork neck on first, and seeing it in person, the thickness was really something.

Staff member grilling the meat

At Hongkyojip, the staff grills the meat for you directly.

Pork neck cut into bite-sized pieces

They cut the thick pork neck into bite-sized pieces as they went and grilled it so it was ready to eat right when it was perfectly done, so all we had to do was eat comfortably haha. Even though the pork neck was this thick, it wasn't dry at all — soft, with good chewiness too.

Grilled thin-trimmed pork neck with the chewy bit attached

In particular, the chewy bit attached to the pork neck was really delicious. At first I thought it was fat, but when I tried it, it had a proper springy texture, giving it a different charm from the neck meat itself haha. The premium five-layer pork belly had a nice savory flavor, and the skin part had a chewy bite that made me think, yep, this is what five-layer pork belly is all about~~ haha.

Mushrooms and eggplant grilled alongside the meat

The mushrooms and eggplant that came with it were also grilled nicely by the staff haha. Eating one between bites of meat, it turned out to be a hidden delicacy too.

Meat sauce made with gochujang and fruit

The meat sauce, they said, is made with gochujang (Korean red chili paste) and fruit. It was sweet with a slight kick, and went really well with the meat, more than I expected. I usually go for salt or ssamjang, but that day I kept reaching for the meat sauce especially. Putting meat and wasabi on top of the wild garlic and eating them together was also a delicious combination haha.

Side dishes — crab miso stew and cheddar cheese steamed egg

Crab miso stew with crab in it

The crab miso stew (kkotgae doenjang jjigae) had crab in it, so the broth was both refreshing and savory. When eating meat, you really can't resist rice with soybean-paste stew... My friend is bulking so he ate a lot, and between the two of us we ended up going through 3 bowls of rice lol.

Steamed egg piled generously with cheddar cheese

We also tried the cheddar cheese steamed egg we got from the Naver receipt review event. The moment it arrived, the visuals were seriously over the top lol. Fluffy steamed egg piled generously with cheddar cheese, savory and soft — it was even better since we got it free from the review event, but it was tasty enough that I wouldn't mind paying for it next time haha.

Overall review of Hongkyojip Jamsil

From the premium thin-trimmed pork neck to the pork belly to the crab miso stew, the two of us left completely full haha. It was so convenient having the staff grill the meat directly, and the variety of side dishes and sauces made everything even better paired together. The chewy bit attached to the thin-trimmed pork neck and the sweet-spicy meat sauce combo stuck with me the most. Overall, both the food and the service were satisfying 👍🏻 If you're looking for a Korean BBQ place in the Bangi-dong food alley where they grill the meat for you, give Hongkyojip Jamsil a try haha. Next time I'm eating meat in Bangi-dong, I think I'll come back here!
