Hanwoo short rib with Maldon salt at Samseong Korean BBQ: Gukbo Garden

In short

Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant right outside Exit 3 of Samseong Jungang Station in Gangnam, Seoul. The writer ordered Gukbo Seolhwa fresh short ribs, hanwoo (Korean beef) short rib meat, and a crab seafood doenjang stew, all grilled by staff, with the hanwoo short rib dipped in just Maldon salt standing out most. With valet parking out front and corkage-free seating at every table, it's an easy pick whether you're driving in or bringing your own bottle.

Today I went somewhere a little pricier than usual. So just for today, I'm going to try channeling my inner YouTuber-in-a-suit voice, haha. Since I ate expensive meat, I'll keep the tone deadpan — like, "So, was it good?" Let's find out.

Today's spot is Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch. It's right in front of Exit 3 of Samseong Jungang Station, so it's easy to find, and there's valet parking out front too, which made it convenient even by car — a Korean BBQ restaurant in Samseong-dong. Above all, the hanwoo (Korean beef) short rib meat I had that day left quite an impression. So today, borrowing a bit of that deadpan energy, let's go through Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch, a hanwoo spot in Samseong-dong.

Right in front of Samseong Jungang Station: location and parking

Exterior of Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch in front of Samseong Jungang Station Exit 3

Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch sits right in front of Exit 3 of Samseong Jungang Station on Line 9. It's basically visible from the station exit, so getting there by public transit is easy.

If you're driving, there's even better news: valet parking right in front of the restaurant. In Samseong-dong, finding parking can sometimes be more stressful than finding the restaurant itself, but here you can just hand your car over right at the door. Valet costs ₩5,000 for the first 2 hours.

The exterior has a neat look with a hanok-style eave laid over the top, unlike a typical BBQ joint, so the first impression was pretty clean. If you're looking for a Korean BBQ restaurant in Samseong-dong with easy parking, this is worth noting.

One thing that personally caught my eye here was the corkage-free policy. I just had soju that day, and it was only later I found out every seat is corkage-free at all times. Wait... if I'd known that, I would've brought a bottle. Haha. Next time I'll bring along a wine or liquor I like and pair it with the meat.

There are also 11 rooms total, holding anywhere from 4 to a maximum of 16 people, which looked good for family gatherings, company dinners, or business meals where you want some privacy.

A calmer-than-expected room-restaurant vibe in Samseong-dong

1st-floor sofa booth seating with partitions

Once inside, the atmosphere felt calmer than the usual noisy BBQ restaurant vibe. Soft lighting, a pine bonsai tree placed here and there, and the 1st floor is mostly made up of sofa booth seats with tall partitions.

The tables are spaced apart enough that you don't immediately lock eyes with the next table over, which I liked. The ceilings are high and the ventilation is decent, so even though it's a charcoal grill space, it didn't feel stuffy.

Independent room seating on the 2nd floor

The 2nd floor has independent rooms, which seemed like a good fit for family meals, company dinners, or business meals where you want a quieter setting. So it's also a place worth remembering if you're looking for a room-style restaurant in Samseong-dong.

Gukbo Garden's menu and what I ordered

You could order easily through the tablet set up at the table. Gukbo Garden says it uses carefully selected meat, including 0.3% YBD Korean pork and 1++ No.9 hanwoo.

What I ordered that day was Gukbo Seolhwa fresh ribs 180g for ₩29,000, hanwoo short rib meat 130g for ₩54,000, and a crab seafood doenjang stew.

During lunch hours, 11:30–15:00, there's a lunch special where you get a charcoal-grilled set course with hot-pot rice and either stew or naengmyeon (cold noodles). If you want to eat meat properly at lunch, it's worth checking out the lunch special.

Let's start with the side dishes

Table set with japchae, dongchimi, seasoned crab, and other side dishes

A little after ordering, the side dishes came out one by one. Japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), dongchimi (watery radish kimchi), seasoned crab, pickles, plus Maldon salt and wasabi — a good lineup to go with the meat.

Overall, the seasoning wasn't overly strong, more clean and refined. I especially liked the dongchimi — cold and crunchy, my chopsticks kept going back for it before the meat even arrived. The japchae was lightly seasoned too, easy to eat as a starter without feeling heavy.

Starting with the Gukbo Seolhwa fresh ribs

Thickly cut raw Gukbo Seolhwa fresh ribs

First up was the Gukbo Seolhwa fresh ribs. Supposedly it's pork aged at low temperature for 168 hours, cut thick — and seeing it in person, the meat really was quite thick.

And here's another convenient thing: the staff grilled it for me from start to finish.

Sometimes at a BBQ restaurant you're so busy grilling that you barely get to actually eat, but here, since the staff grills it, you can just eat comfortably.

Taking a bite of the meat, golden-browned over the charcoal, the outside was well cooked while the inside stayed moist.

Dipped lightly in salt, it eats clean and light, and it also paired well with the scallion salad or the seasoned crab.

Aww, so good ❤️

But today's real star is the hanwoo short rib meat

Okay, now for the dish I most wanted to talk about today: the hanwoo short rib meat. Honestly, the pork was also delicious, but out of everything I ate that day, the hanwoo short rib meat left the deepest impression.

Raw hanwoo short rib meat with dense marbling

Fine marbling ran densely through the bright red flesh, so it already looked good before it even hit the grill.

Once it hit the charcoal, a gentle smoky aroma wrapped around it, and the smell alone got my appetite going. Taking a bite, the texture was tender and the juices were rich.

With meat like this, you really don't need to dip it in a bunch of sauces. I liked it best with just a light dip in Maldon salt.

You could really taste the deep, savory flavor of the meat itself, so even with just a little salt it was plenty delicious. A touch of wasabi worked too, and it went nicely with the pickles as well.

Personally, out of everything I ate that day, the hanwoo short rib meat was hands-down number one. Ah... so this is why they say good meat tastes great with just salt.

And I enjoyed it so much that when I got home and stepped on the scale, I'd broken 48kg for the first time in years. Haha. To be clear, this doesn't mean I gained a bunch of fat overnight.

Body weight can swing quite a bit day to day just from the weight of food eaten and water retention. So there's really just one takeaway: that day, I properly ate well.

Finishing with the crab seafood doenjang stew

A pot of crab seafood doenjang stew

When you keep eating meat, you eventually need something warm and brothy. That's why I also ordered the crab seafood doenjang stew. Made with a naturally fermented Gyeongju doenjang base and loaded with crab and clams, it had a deep, savory flavor along with that distinct clean seafood taste.

After eating charcoal-grilled meat, a spoonful of the broth cleared my palate nicely. It's a good match for anyone who wants a full meal with rice and stew rather than stopping after just meat.

Dessert too, all in one place

After finishing the meal, there was also a dessert corner set up in one part of the restaurant that you could use. Along with coffee and tea, there was ice cream available too.

I topped my ice cream with chocolate syrup and cereal. After all that meat, finishing off with something sweet somehow still went down easy. Being able to handle meat, the main meal, and dessert all in one place made the whole dining course feel pretty complete.

Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch, a Korean BBQ restaurant in Samseong-dong: overall thoughts

Table at Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch after finishing the meal

To mark visiting somewhere a little pricier today, I tried out that deadpan reviewer tone for a bit, haha. But bottom line: the meat was good.

The dish I was most satisfied with that day was the hanwoo short rib meat. The flavor of the meat itself was so good that dipping it lightly in Maldon salt was my favorite combo, and having the staff grill it for me made the whole meal easy and comfortable.

On top of that, the accessibility right in front of Samseong Jungang Station Exit 3, the valet parking out front, and the seating setup with 1st-floor booths and 2nd-floor rooms were all pluses.

And lastly... corkage-free at every seat. This one genuinely bugged me. If I'd known ahead of time, I would've brought a bottle. Next time I visit, I'm going with the hanwoo short rib meat plus a bottle combo.
