Seoul Korean BBQ near Samseong Station: beef tartare and ribs at Gukbo

In short

Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch is a two-story charcoal Korean BBQ restaurant right outside Exit 3 of Samseong Jungang Station in Gangnam, Seoul. Visiting for dinner with a friend, the writer ordered bakpo fresh short ribs for two, 1++ Korean beef (hanwoo) tartare, hanwoo sundubu-jjigae (soft tofu stew), and Han Don snowflake imperial flower cut pork, complete with staff grilling service and Yoajeong ice cream for dessert. With both private rooms and window seats, it works equally well for company dinners, business meals, or dates.

Today I went for dinner at a Samseong-area meat restaurant near Samseong Jungang Station — Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch. Gangnam has no shortage of Korean BBQ spots, but this one stood out for being clean and spacious, great for company dinners, groups, or dates. Let's get into it!

Where is Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch located?

Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch sits right outside Exit 3 of Samseong Jungang Station. Great location, great access — plenty of people come here for client meals from nearby offices, or for a nice dinner date after work. My friend and I just hopped on the subway to get there!

The 2nd-floor rooms and dining hall atmosphere

Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch has two floors, and the place is bigger than I expected. I thought, on prime Gangnam real estate, a two-story restaurant couldn't survive without seriously good quality — which only raised my expectations, haha.

The 2nd floor is made up of private rooms; you can use them by reservation or by asking separately. Seems like a great spot for an important meal or to entertain an important guest privately!

Inside, each table has a low wall for privacy. Unlike a typical restaurant where tables are packed together, this felt much more comfortable and relaxed.

Modern interior with Korean design touches

The overall interior is very clean with Korean touches hidden here and there. The modern vibe made it feel more sophisticated — total fine-dining-restaurant energy!

They also seem to run a birthday celebration event. For someone's one special day of the year, that extra bit of care feels like it'll stay as a good memory for a long time!

I visited at 6pm, and the window seat view was incredible, right? Enjoying meat while looking out at the scenery outside — this vibe could rival fine dining.

The basic table setting looks like this, and the hood that sucks up the meat smoke is placed beside the grill, which is super convenient.

They also had a huge selection of alcohol. Not just traditional Korean liquor but Balvenie, Kavalan, and more — perfect for entertaining an important guest!

Wait, is that a Kim Whanki painting in a BBQ restaurant?

Oh, and looking at this painting, I thought — huh?? This looks like Kim Whanki's style... And looking closer, it really was?? ????

Why is there a Kim Whanki painting here?! As someone who loves art, it was such a pleasant, novel, and surreal experience haha. Artwork really sets the mood of a space and elevates its overall quality — Gukbo Garden is the BBQ restaurant with a Kim Whanki painting.

Menu and ingredients

True to a charcoal-grilled ribs specialist, they use top-tier ingredients: premium Korean pork (han don) and hanwoo (Korean beef), high-quality Sindongjin rice, Maldon salt, and naturally fermented Gyeongju doenjang (soybean paste). Just reading the details already told me the quality was on another level.

First, we ordered the fresh short ribs for two, and added a beef tartare on top.

First up, the neat set of banchan (side dishes) arrives.

A neat spread of basic side dishes

The side dishes at Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch were overall so clean, letting the flavor of the raw ingredients really shine through. Beyond taste, there was this feeling of 'we used really good ingredients — try it!' haha. I'm self-proclaimed as a foodie with a talent for spotting fresh ingredients, so I can tell after just one bite.

First, the bakpo ribs I ordered for two arrived.

A staff member grilled it for us directly, so we could just relax and trust the process. Feels like at this kind of upscale restaurant, they always provide grilling service so guests can enjoy comfortably. Must be tough on the staff, but from a guest's perspective it was so convenient! Always grateful.

1++ hanwoo tartare

The mood was so good that I thought, why not, and ordered the hanwoo tartare. Look at that color, right? The plating at Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch is art.

Plated 1++ hanwoo tartare

The seasoning was mild and not overpowering, so the freshness and tenderness of the 1++ hanwoo really came through in every bite.

A bite of hanwoo tartare lifted with chopsticks

As someone who absolutely loves beef tartare, what made me realize this place's tartare is genuinely delicious was three things: fresh quality, a not-too-strong flavor, and a clean, well-balanced taste. All three were super satisfying. FYI, they run an event where you get free hanwoo tartare for writing a Naver receipt review!

While we were chatting away and eating the tartare, the staff member skillfully grilled the ribs for us. Total grilling mastery.

The perfectly grilled bakpo fresh short ribs. Actually, this was my first time trying this cut, so I was curious how chewy and delicious it would be.

A piece of golden-grilled bakpo fresh short rib

Dipped in salt, it was pure clean flavor... chewy with perfect umami. Unlike pork belly or pork shoulder, being a fresh rib cut gave it a slightly chewier, denser bite.

What do you do when a BBQ restaurant has so many varied side dishes? You wrap the meat generously, haha. I love wrapping meat in vegetables, so pairing it with the fresh banchan let me enjoy a variety of flavors!

A meat wrap loaded with side dishes

Everything was good, but the minari (water dropwort) namul had such a fresh aroma that I ended up putting it in every single wrap. If you run out of a side dish, you can just order more via the tablet — so convenient, no need to flag anyone down.

Han Don snowflake imperial flower cut pork

A cut I'd never heard of before — Han Don snowflake imperial flower cut pork. It's a bit like sirloin, but seemed like a really premium cut, so I tried it!

Just looking at the color is amazing, right? Old or low-quality meat usually develops a whitish film on the surface as it grills, but that never happens with the meat at Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch, haha.

This one was amazing too... true to its name as the 'imperial flower cut,' it had that same melt-in-your-mouth texture as hanwoo flower sirloin — except this time from pork.

The snowflake imperial flower cut... I'd never experienced anything like it. Hanwoo texture from pork?! How high quality does the meat have to be for that to happen! It almost felt like a waste to wrap it, since it would mask that soft, buttery flavor.

Hanwoo sundubu-jjigae

Hanwoo sundubu-jjigae bubbling away

My friend, who was drinking, wanted this, so we ordered the hanwoo sundubu-jjigae (soft tofu stew). First time ordering sundubu-jjigae at a BBQ place — since everything so far had been amazing, my expectations were sky-high for what would come next, haha.

Full meal spread served with the sundubu-jjigae

One bite and I was speechless. It was that good. The broth was so deep — the rendered hanwoo fat gave it rich umami, and the balance with the soft tofu was perfect...! I thought, 'this could totally be sold as a lunch dish,' and sure enough, checking the menu, it's on there at the same price for lunch. Way too good to just be a side dish.

Adding rice and mixing it all together was such a perfect balance. I'd love to come back for lunch sometime — I want to try all their meal menu items.

Yoajeong ice cream served for dessert

Dessert: Yoajeong ice cream

Once you're done eating, you can enjoy Yoajeong ice cream for dessert. Americano, omija tea, and mixed coffee are also available. But Yoajeong for dessert? Can't resist that.

Putting my old McDonald's work experience to use, I swirled it up nicely haha. They even had choco shell topping, so it really felt like the full Yoajeong experience! Dessert absolutely nailed too — Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch is perfect down to dessert!

Final thoughts

A day of delicious meat and constant amazement — it had been a while. My friend who came along kept saying how spoiled she felt, thanks to this meal. I was satisfied enough that I'd love to bring my parents here next time.
