Today I want to introduce a spot near Maebong Station in Gangnam where I had a really tasty aged short rib meal! I visited Woosang Hwarogui (우상화로구이), a restaurant specializing in aged short ribs near Maebong Station. The charcoal grill atmosphere was great and the meat was delicious, so let me tell you all about it :)

The exterior and parking

I made a reservation for 6:30pm that day. The location was about a 5-minute walk from Maebong Station, so access was easy!

Free parking space in front of the restaurant

There's parking available right in front of the restaurant! Parking is always a bit of a worry when eating in Gangnam, but here there was space right outside to park. And it's free, so even though I drove that day, parking was really convenient haha :)

What was the interior atmosphere like?

Clean, tidy interior of the charcoal grill restaurant

The interior was clean, tidy, and comfortable overall haha. The vibe felt a bit more like a charcoal grill place or a yakiniku restaurant than a typical Korean BBQ spot. There was actually a group dinner happening at the next table, but the place wasn't loud overall, so it seemed fine for having a conversation while eating!! There were also semi-curtains, which made it feel private, almost like a room :)

Since I'd made a reservation in advance, they showed us to our reserved seat :)

Small plates and wet towel set up at the reserved table

Once we sat down, they set us up with small plates, water cups, and wet towels. Personally, I loved that the wet towel came warm. Wiping my hands with a warm towel instead of a plain one already put me in a good mood before the meal even started ☺️

The menu

Woosang has a wide variety of meat dishes, sides, and alcohol on the menu. The drink selection especially stood out — there were several kinds of highballs, along with everything from traditional Korean liquor to wine, so it seemed like a great spot to enjoy a drink alongside the meat :)

Basic side dishes

A spread of basic side dishes to pair with the meat

After a short wait, a variety of banchan (side dishes) to pair with the meat started arriving one by one. Salt and wasabi, wasabi-pickled shiitake mushrooms, cucumber doenjang (soybean paste), potato salad, pickles, baek-kimchi (white kimchi), aged kimchi, pickled chili peppers — all dishes that go well with meat, and varied enough that I never got tired of them.

The 85,000-won mixed platter

Three cuts of beef plated on the mixed platter

We ordered the 'mixed platter' (85,000 won). Passed the visual test right away!! It came beautifully arranged on one big plate, so I took plenty of photos first haha.

Mixed platter served with vegetables

Along with the meat, the platter came with a variety of side vegetables — tomato, mushroom, garlic, corn, and shishito peppers — so the whole plate felt generous and complete. The cuts consisted of three types: chamjinsal, angeomisal, and gadakgalbi.

Mountains of green onion

And something you can't skip at Woosang is the mountain of green onion! You pile a generous amount of green onion on top of the meat and eat it together — much like how yakiniku places pair meat with scallions — and it went really well with the beef.

Beef grilling over charcoal

Gadakgalbi

Gadakgalbi: long strands of meat attached around the rib bone. I grilled the gadakgalbi first. It had more texture than a typical galbi cut, with a nice chew, and just the right amount of fat — delicious :)

Chamjinsal and angeomisal

Chamjinsal: meat from the inner side of the hind leg. It's mostly lean, but with just the right texture and a bit of fattiness that made it savory. Of the three cuts, this was my favorite ⭐️

+ Angeomisal: a special cut from the inner side of the geomisal. It had a chewy texture and a fairly strong meaty flavor. Personally, it reminded me a bit of bujaesal (chuck flap)!

A bite of meat wrapped with green onion

That day, I kept switching up combinations with each bite — salt, wasabi, green onion, pickled chili — and thanks to that, I never got tired of it and enjoyed every last bite! My personal favorite combination is aged kimchi + green onion salad + meat 🤍

Dessert: Hamheung bibim naengmyeon

Hamheung bibim naengmyeon ordered for dessert

For dessert we ordered Hamheung-style bibim naengmyeon (spicy cold buckwheat noodles). And it was genuinely delicious...! I already like Hamheung naengmyeon in general, and this one was really good too :)

Thin noodles coated in spicy-sweet sauce
Mixed Hamheung-style noodles

The noodles were very thin but chewy, and the spicy-sweet sauce was well soaked in between the strands, so I could really taste it with every bite! My companion kept saying how good it was too, haha. We were already pretty full but finished it without leaving anything. Finishing off the meat with spicy cold noodles at the end was just perfect :)

Dessert

Ice cream served as dessert after the meal

After we finished eating and were about to leave, the staff told us there was still dessert. They gave us Excellent ice cream! 🥹🍦 Funnily enough, we'd been chatting while eating about maybe grabbing ice cream or coffee on the way out. But they gave us ice cream right then, so we got to end on a happy note all the way to the last bite 🤍

Final thoughts

Overall, the meat was delicious and the charcoal fire was strong, making for a really satisfying meal! My favorite combination was the mountain of green onion with aged kimchi, and the Hamheung bibim naengmyeon was also great, so I enjoyed every bite until the very end :) The dining room was quiet and calm, making for a relaxed meal, and being able to park right in front of the restaurant was really convenient too.
