Family dinner near Munrae Station: whole roasted chicken at Jangjakgun
In short
Jangjakgun Munrae is an oak-fired whole chicken restaurant a 7-minute walk from Munrae Station in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. Visiting on a weekday evening with parents after a hospital checkup, the corn cheese nurungji (scorched rice) chicken and rice balls came out with meat so moist even the breast stayed tender after 2 hours over the fire, and the complimentary chicken porridge finished the meal on a gentle note. A solid pick for both family dinners and work gatherings.

My parents had their regular checkup at Kim's Eye Hospital in Yeongdeungpo, so I went along with them. It was rainy and chilly, and their appointment ran into late afternoon, so I wanted to treat them to something hearty and warming. I happened to find an oak-fired whole chicken specialist just 7 minutes on foot from Munrae Station, so I took them there. It's the kind of place both young and old can enjoy without feeling heavy — here's my visit to Jangjakgun Munrae, a whole chicken restaurant that turned out to be a real Munrae find for a family meal!

There's a huge stack of oak firewood piled up in front of the restaurant! It got me excited before I'd even stepped inside.
Interior and self-bar
As soon as I arrived I could see whole chickens roasting golden-brown inside the wood-fired oven, cooked for about 2 hours over 400-degree flames — genuinely fascinating to watch.

The interior was a modern, clean black-toned space, tidy and comfortable. There's a self-bar off to one side where you can help yourself to crisp pickled radish, refreshing house-made domestic yeolmu kimchi (young radish kimchi), and sauces — a nice touch.
Is there a wait on weekday evenings?
We came around 6pm on a weekday. When we walked in, one table was in the middle of a work dinner, and by the time we finished and left around 7, the place was fully booked and people were starting to wait. Busy even on a weekday — clearly a genuine Munrae-dong favorite. Most of the other diners looked like coworkers from nearby offices, though there were also families and couples on dates.
Tasting the corn cheese nurungji chicken: soft and nutty

The menu has plenty of options, and there's a half-and-half option too if you want to mix — worth knowing. We ordered the corn cheese nurungji (scorched rice) chicken, piled with mozzarella cheese and sweet corn, plus rice balls. The oak smoke apparently keeps it light rather than greasy, and easy on the stomach.

The whole chicken arrived sizzling on a stone plate, generous enough in size and portion to feed three adults easily. Even the breast meat — which usually turns dry after 2 hours over the fire — was astonishingly soft and moist. Honestly, the breast might have been the best part. The cheese seemed like the good stuff too, stretching in long nutty strands rather than snapping off, and dipping the sweet corn and clean-tasting chicken into the sauce was fantastic. Personally I loved the mustard sauce — nothing like the bottled kind. Wrapping the cheese-topped chicken and dunking it into that tangy, sweet-and-spicy mustard sauce! Just thinking about it makes me want more.

Glutinous rice nurungji and yeolmu kimchi
The crispy glutinous rice nurungji (scorched rice) stuck to the bottom of the plate paired perfectly with the cool yeolmu kimchi. It's made with glutinous rice, so it's less brittle-crunchy and more chewy-crisp — really charming.

The rice balls, loaded with nutty seaweed flakes, made a perfect carb-and-protein match with the chicken.

The complimentary chicken porridge came with the meat picked off and shredded soft, mild yet deeply flavorful — my parents finished the whole bowl without any trouble. In both taste and quality, it was a Munrae whole chicken restaurant with nothing to fault.
Final verdict
Jangjakgun Munrae brought together oak smoke, crispy nurungji, and tender chicken for what might be the best whole chicken in Munrae.
- Generous portions, moist meat: 2 hours over the wood fire, with even the breast staying tender.
- Corn cheese and nurungji harmony: 99% mozzarella cheese, glutinous rice nurungji, and yeolmu kimchi in perfect balance.
- Thoughtful service: a warming complimentary chicken porridge and a clean, comfortable black-toned dining room.
A great spot for a work dinner or family meal — I highly recommend giving Jangjakgun a visit!
