Jeju airport-area restaurant with spicy fish roe stew: Hwadeogeuro

In short

Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang Jeju Iho Tewoo Branch is a wood-fired grilled fish restaurant on the Iho Tewoo coastal road near Jeju Airport. On the last day of a Jeju trip, the writer ordered the mackerel set for two plus a fish roe stew (altang) side set made extra spicy, and ate it in front of the floor-to-ceiling ocean-view windows, with so much roe that more kept surfacing every time the stew was stirred. Because each fish is grilled to order, Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang is worth a phone order in advance if your flight time is tight.

Last day of my Jeju trip! Before heading home, I wanted a solid meal, so I went out for grilled fish. This time I visited Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo, Iho Tewoo branch.

As the name suggests, this place serves fish grilled over a wood-fired oven (화덕), but what I loved most was the ocean view!! The floor-to-ceiling windows open up to a huge stretch of sea, so you can eat while watching the ocean 🌊 Let's get into this Jeju Iho Tewoo favorite, Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo.

Where is Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang Iho Tewoo, and what are the hours?

Even the exterior has big floor-to-ceiling windows, so I figured the ocean would look great from inside too. There's also a dedicated parking lot, which made it easy to visit by car. It's not huge, but hey, having your own lot at all when dining out in Jeju is a win haha. I parked and headed straight in.

The first thing I saw the moment I opened the door was, of course, the ocean 👀 The floor-to-ceiling glass opens up to a huge stretch of sea, and it was genuinely gorgeous. With the good weather, the blue sea stretched out clearly and it really felt like Jeju lol. I love eating with a view, so this kind of place is right up my alley 💙

The interior was also bigger than expected. Lots of tables, plenty of seating, so it seemed like a good spot for families or groups. Sitting by the windows especially would be great since you can eat while looking at the ocean!

On one side there's a self-serve bar. If the side dishes run low, you can go grab as much as you want.

What we ordered: mackerel set for two plus a fish roe stew side set

After going back and forth on the menu, we ordered the mackerel set for two plus a roe stew (알탕) side set. Since I love spicy food, I asked for the stew to be made spicy 🌶️ I wanted grilled mackerel and also spicy roe stew, so this combo ended up being really satisfying haha.

Here's the real win: ✅free extra rice with each set ordered per person.

On one side of the self-serve bar, you could fry your own egg 🍳 A warm fried egg with rice sounded perfect.

Besides the usual side dishes, there was also tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), potato pancake, and scorched rice tea (누룽지)?

I rushed over and grabbed some right away. The potato pancake was better than expected — a bit sweet with that classic nutty potato flavor, good for snacking on before the fish arrived. The tteokbokki was spicy-sweet and tasty too, so between all of it I nearly filled up before the main dish even showed up lol. The scorched rice tea was also available, nice to finish the meal with.

But here's something I didn't know... once the food arrived, it turned out the set meal comes with its own basic side dishes lol. I had no idea and had already loaded up a whole plate from the self-serve bar 😅 Turns out the basic sides are separate, and the self-serve bar is meant for extra portions or dishes you want more of lol 😓 Don't make my mistake and overload your plate at the start 🤣

How long does the mackerel set take to arrive?

It took a bit longer than expected for the full set to come out after ordering. Seems like everything is grilled to order, so it doesn't come out right away.

We were heading home from Jeju that day, so our flight time made things a bit tight. If you're visiting on a day without much time to spare, I'd recommend calling ahead to order in advance! Especially on the last day of a Jeju trip when you need to catch a flight, it's best to give yourself extra time.

Grilled mackerel with side dishes, rice, and bean sprout soup on the table

A big grilled mackerel sat right in the middle, surrounded by an array of side dishes, rice, and bean sprout soup — a full spread. Seeing it laid out like this really felt like a proper meal haha. The mackerel was grilled to a nice golden brown, the kind of visual that just makes you want rice.

I tried picking the flesh off the mackerel — it was plump with plenty to eat. A spoonful of rice, a piece of mackerel on top, a bite of a side dish — grilled fish really does taste best with rice! If you love grilled mackerel, this set should fill you up nicely.

Lettuce wrap with mackerel and ssamjang sauce

Mackerel over rice is delicious on its own, but I also tried it wrapped in lettuce. Put the mackerel on the lettuce leaf, add just ssamjang (dipping sauce), and eat it in one bite — the lettuce was soft and it was really tasty.

The extra-spicy fish roe stew: roe that keeps coming

Roe stew served in a large stone pot

And then, the roe stew (알탕) I'd been waiting for! The stone pot was bigger than I expected. My first thought was, "Oh, that's a lot!" — but when I stirred it... there was an insane amount of roe in there lol. Wow...🫢

I didn't expect that much roe in a stew, and it just kept appearing. It wasn't a one-scoop-and-done situation — every time I stirred, more roe showed up, like it never ran out no matter how much I ate 🤣

Spicy roe stew broth packed full of roe

The broth, probably because I asked for it spicy, was properly sharp and fiery. One spoonful in and it felt like an instant hangover cure. Nothing beats a spicy broth like this the day after drinking on a trip... Especially since there was so much roe, I kept scooping it into my side plate and more kept appearing.

If you love roe stew, you'll really love this one! The broth was sharp and clean-tasting, which paired really well with the grilled mackerel too. A bite of mackerel, then a spoonful of the roe stew broth — it resets your palate perfectly haha.

I came for grilled mackerel and left having thoroughly enjoyed the roe stew too 😋 If you want a hearty grilled fish spread with an ocean view in Jeju, give Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang Iho Tewoo branch a try.

Recommended 😊
