Mapo Station restaurant with unlimited pot rice refills: Gyudo
In short
Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch is a smoked gyukatsu (breaded deep-fried beef cutlet) restaurant on basement level 1 of the Obelisk shopping arcade at Mapo Station in Mapo, Seoul. On the evening of the Yeouido Fireworks Festival there were 29 teams ahead and a 40-minute wait, and the order was the two-person set that brings the gyukatsu set and the yakiniku set together, with self-serve refills of Sindongjin rice cooked in an iron pot and a finish of ochazuke in katsuobushi broth. At Gyudo the unlimited pot rice was the bigger draw, even more than the gyukatsu.

The Yeouido Fireworks Festival came around again this year! Since we were in Mapo, we couldn't skip a good restaurant. And I think I found the gyukatsu spot of my life... premium gyukatsu, unlimited pot rice, and a perfect finish with ochazuke.

Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo is connected directly to Mapo Station. It's on the basement floor of the Obelisk building! There's a passage connecting to the building before you even reach exits 1 and 2, so it was super easy to find!

How long is the wait? 29 teams ahead, 40 minutes
It's already a well-known restaurant in Mapo, so there's a wait on weekdays and weekends alike... I had about 29 teams ahead of me and waited around 40 minutes.
There were waiting seats too, so I could wait comfortably. Since it's in a basement, it's neither hot nor cold, so waiting was totally fine!
Gyudo is a premium gyukatsu specialist. To maintain exclusivity and provide the best quality, they only operate as directly-run stores rather than franchises, apparently!
They say they reinterpreted Japanese-style ochazuke in a Korean way, and maybe that's why the interior feels like a mix of Japan and Korea! Clean and the vibe is great, right? Would be great for a date or a blind date!

There's even a coat locker so your clothes don't absorb smells. Such a thoughtful touch...

Gyudo's menu and what comes in the two-person set
This is Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo's menu. The gyukatsu set and yakiniku set seemed the most popular, so I ordered the two-person set that includes one of each. There's also a kids' pork cutlet and soba that's light and easy to eat, so it seems good for solo dining too!

Gyudo's usage guide is also kindly written out! Unlimited rice and broth... and it's even Sindongjin rice hot-pot rice. Are you kidding me (lol)

Under the table there's a cutlery pouch, wet wipes, and tissues. Not just one drawer per table — each seat has its own individual drawer with a custom-made cutlery pouch!!! That's the kind of detail that shows real thoughtfulness...
The smoked gyukatsu set
This is the smoked gyukatsu set. They say it's a truly one-of-a-kind smoked gyukatsu, made using an offset smoker with wood smoking.

Here's the smoked gyukatsu. The color is amazing... it looks like it'd be good even eaten raw...

It comes with radish salad, onsen egg, sauce, and salt. They say they make the radish salad in-house too! The flavor makes you want to eat the fried food endlessly.

The yakiniku set, grilled yourself on a personal brazier
This is the yakiniku set. Smoked meat comes out, and you dip it in sauce and grill it on the brazier yourself!

Doesn't the yakiniku look delicious too? The wild garlic wasabi that comes with it is also handmade in-house, apparently!

The yakiniku set also comes with radish salad, onsen egg, sauce, and salt. The thin sauce in the big bowl should be used to dip the meat before grilling! The onsen egg is great dipped with meat or mixed into rice.

You cook it yourself, sizzling away, as much as you like on the custom-made bangjja brassware personal brazier. I've been to a lot of gyukatsu places, but this is the first time I've grilled yakiniku alongside it!!!

Mix the onsen egg thoroughly into the rice, top it with a piece of meat, and a whole bowl of rice disappears in an instant... magic.
Unlimited refills of Sindongjin rice pot rice
This is the first time I've seen pot rice at a gyukatsu restaurant... the rice itself is so delicious, and even the sweet pumpkin shows they know what they're doing. They say Gyudo's pot rice uses a single variety of Sindongjin rice, top to premium grade, to maintain the best stickiness and texture!

You can keep self-refilling the rice from the cute little pot. I'm so jealous of the office workers who work nearby...

The gamtae myeongnan (seaweed-wrapped pollock roe) that came with the set is also such a rice thief, so I kept eating it with rice, which led to another refill lolololol

Finishing with ochazuke in one of three broths
And pot rice wouldn't be complete without sungnyung (scorched rice water)!!! Here they combine Korean-style sungnyung with Japanese-style ochazuke, so there are three options: solomon's seal tea that just tastes like sungnyung, a tonkotsu broth that reminds you of pork soup, and a katsuobushi broth that tastes distinctly Japanese.

You pick whichever suits your taste out of the three! The flavor changes completely depending on which broth you choose!

I chose the katsuobushi broth! You scoop it yourself into a little kettle. Even this part is so cute haha

You add the flake toppings prepared in your individual drawer into the sungnyung to eat it like ochazuke!

The topping tea bag pairs so well with the katsuobushi broth! It instantly felt like I'd been transported to Japan. The gyukatsu was super tasty too, but the pot rice was a huge bonus!
If you're looking for a good restaurant near Mapo Station or Gongdeok Station, I recommend Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo!
