This time I'm introducing a Mapo Station favorite, a pork belly restaurant with amazing green onion kimchi: Mapo Gui Madang Yonggang Direct Branch.

Jeolla-style green onion kimchi meets old-school pork belly — Mapo Gui Madang Yonggang Direct Branch is a green onion kimchi and pork belly restaurant done right.
I visited on a Saturday evening during the fireworks festival. This Mapo Station pork belly spot was packed with customers. There's a nice menu posted outside. Oddly, they seem to sell lottery tickets too. I didn't have cash so I couldn't buy one, but keep it in mind 😉 If you visit on a Saturday, it could be fun to grab a lottery ticket, eat, and check the results afterward.

Full of reserved seats and customers, so I didn't get many interior photos. There were quite a lot of round tables on both sides.
A trustworthy open kitchen. Mapo Gui Madang has that old, seasoned-restaurant feel — a place with real experience behind it.

This place is so serious about green onion kimchi (파김치) that they sell it separately — a true green onion kimchi restaurant. I'd never seen a place list the health benefits of green onion kimchi before.

Kimchi, green onion kimchi, white kimchi — Mapo Gui Madang is a kimchi restaurant through and through. The grilled kimchi and green onion kimchi are especially delicious.
We first ordered 2 servings of frozen pork belly. It had genuinely been a while since I ordered frozen pork belly — the grilling can be a bit of a hassle so I don't often get it.
They sprinkle on pepper as they grill. Frozen pork belly, grilled golden and crisp 😋 They also grill the kimchi in the fat rendered from the pork belly.
Grilled kimchi with pork belly, green onion kimchi with pork belly — both insanely good. Yes, this is what frozen pork belly is about!!! The savory, crispy taste that's unique to frozen pork belly, a different charm from regular pork belly. It had been so long since I had it and it was so good that we quickly finished it and ordered 2 more servings, finishing those too.

Jjagyechi ₩5,000 — a must-order
Jjagyechi for ₩5,000 — you must order this!!! At a green onion kimchi restaurant like this, you can't resist black bean instant noodles.
There's something dreamy and glowing about this jjagyechi. Oddly, Mapo Gui Madang's jjagyechi doesn't come with a fried egg but half a boiled egg instead. Topped with julienned cucumber, black-bean noodle style — so it felt more like a different brand of black bean noodles than the usual Chapagetti. But does it matter!!! As long as there's delicious green onion kimchi on the side, this jjagyechi is the best 👍

A pork belly restaurant near Mapo Station where I was, for once in a long time, fully satisfied with frozen pork belly — Mapo Gui Madang Yonggang Direct Branch. Frozen pork belly grilled crisp with a dusting of pepper, and a true kimchi restaurant with delicious Jeolla-style green onion kimchi — a Mapo Station spot where you grill pork belly and kimchi together and eat it all with green onion kimchi. You absolutely must add the jjagyechi and eat it together with the green onion kimchi 😋 Satisfied with the pork belly, thoroughly satisfied with the green onion kimchi. Next time I'll have to try the fried rice too.
The fireworks festival was great too. There are lots of good spots nearby for watching the Seoul fireworks festival 😊
