Gangnam Korean restaurant for solo gomtang: Geumnyeong Gomtang

In short

Geumnyeong Gomtang Yeoksam Branch is a gomtang restaurant between Gangnam Station and Sinnonhyeon in Seoul. I ordered gomtang for 13,000 won and three kimchi king dumplings for 6,000 won, and loved the speedy service, self-serve kimchi, and roomy seating. Solo meal at Geumnyeong Gomtang near Sinnonhyeon

I had an errand near Gangnam Station on my own and spent ages wondering what to have for lunch,, There are more Western restaurants than Korean ones around Gangnam Station than you might expectㅠㅠ But sometimes you just want a hearty Korean meal by yourself, right? I didn’t want something too light, but I also didn’t want a menu that feels awkward to eat alone—I was craving a warm, filling Korean meal.

Then I found Geumnyeong Gomtang Yeoksam Branch over by Sinnonhyeon. It didn’t feel awkward to walk in alone, the food came quickly, and a bowl of gomtang (Korean beef soup) really filled me up. I thought it would be a good option for anyone looking for a Korean restaurant near Sinnonhyeon or a solo dining spot in Gangnam.

Geumnyeong Gomtang Yeoksam Branch: location and visit details

Geumnyeong Gomtang Yeoksam Branch basic information

The address is 1, 1F Bongeunsa-ro 4-gil, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, South Korea, and it is open daily from 10:30 to 22:00. Parking is not available.

It was an easy walk between Gangnam Station and Sinnonhyeon. It is down a side street, but the large sign made it easy to find!! Since there is no parking, it seems especially suited to nearby office workers at lunch or visitors using public transit.

An interior for solo meals through group dining

Bright, clean interior at Geumnyeong Gomtang

Once inside, the restaurant was much more spacious than I expected. It was bright and clean overall, with lots of tables for two to four people, so it looked ideal for office workers coming in for lunch. There were also people eating alone when I visited, so it absolutely did not feel awkward to come by yourself! That made me think it would be genuinely easy to recommend for solo dining in Gangnam.

There was also a larger seating area at the back for several people. Beside the self-service bar, there was a somewhat separated room, too, making this a restaurant where groups can have a quieter meal!

It is great to come alone for a bowl of gomtang, while groups could order shareable dishes such as boiled beef slices or seasoned pollock salad. It seemed versatile: solo and office-worker lunches during the day, then a group-dining restaurant in the evening.

A look at the Korean beef grade information

One thing that stood out at Geumnyeong Gomtang was how clearly it explained its Korean beef grades. The restaurant noted that it uses premium Korean beef graded 1+ and 1++, and it had actual grade labels displayed together on one side. The country-of-origin information was also easy to spot, which gave me the sense that they were quite confident about their ingredients.

With a dish like gomtang, where the meat itself matters so much, I tend to notice these details. I was impressed that they made it possible to check for yourself.

Ordering gomtang and kimchi king dumplings

Gomtang and dumpling menu at Geumnyeong Gomtang

The menu was varied, from gomtang, minari (water parsley) gomtang, rice noodles, and minari rice noodles to seasoned pollock salad and boiled beef slices. Since I was alone, I ordered the most basic gomtang for ₩13,000 and three kimchi king dumplings for ₩6,000. It was a pretty generous order for a solo lunch, but I wanted a filling meal that day, so I added the dumplings too haha.

Self-service side dishes: take only what you need

There was a separate self-service bar on one side of the restaurant.

Garlic, pickled vegetables, kimchi, seasoned greens, peppers, and other good accompaniments were laid out, and I could comfortably take as much as I needed.

Self-service kimchi that pairs well with gomtang

I especially liked the kimchi here. Broth matters at a gomtang restaurant, of course, but for me, good kimchi really raises the satisfaction level haha. This kimchi went so well with the gomtang.

Crunchy, spicy kimchi at the gomtang restaurant

It had a nice crunch and just the right spicy kick, so I kept reaching for it between bites of gomtang.

Korean beef gomtang with a clean broth

A quickly served bowl of Korean beef gomtang

My food came out quickly without much waiting. That is seriously important at lunchtime, right? Office workers especially have to eat within a limited lunch break, so this felt like a real advantage.

Clear gomtang topped with green onion and meat

The gomtang came with rice in a clear broth, topped generously with green onion and meat. You can see from the photo that there was quite a lot of meat!

Gomtang with generous pieces of meat

Each piece of meat was a good size and not tough, so it was easy to eat. Rather than being extremely oily and heavy, the broth was on the clean, easy-to-finish side.

Filling gomtang with rice and meat

Still, once you eat the rice and meat together, one bowl leaves you feeling quite full. It was perfect for a lunch when I wanted to settle my stomach with a warm bowl of soup.

Gomtang rice and meat with kimchi

My personal favorite combination was scooping up rice and meat together, then topping it with kimchi!!!!! Since the gomtang broth was clean-tasting, the spicy kimchi made the pairing just right. Honestly, the gomtang was delicious that day, but I feel like I ate even better because the kimchi was so good haha.

Kimchi king dumplings, a great side

And then there were the kimchi king dumplings I ordered as a side! True to the name, they were quite large, and even with just three, they did not feel skimpy at all.

Cross-section of a kimchi king dumpling with kimchi filling

When I split one open, it was packed with kimchi filling. They were moist with kimchi’s characteristic spicy flavor, so they went well with the gomtang!!! But seriously, I was so full,,

Gomtang alone is filling enough for a solo visit, but on a day when you want something more substantial, adding the kimchi king dumplings would be nice. I also recommend ordering one meal each plus the dumplings if you go as two!!

If you want a hearty Korean meal near Gangnam Station or Sinnonhyeon rather than something overly intense, or if you need an easy Gangnam solo dining spot after running errands, Geumnyeong Gomtang seems like a solid choice.

Finishing a meal at Geumnyeong Gomtang near Sinnonhyeon
  • The food comes quickly, making it good for an office-worker lunch.
  • It feels easy to visit alone.
  • A clean bowl of gomtang makes for a filling meal.
  • The self-service sides, especially the kimchi, are delicious.
  • There is also a space at the back that works well for groups.

Personally, I recommend the gomtang + kimchi king dumpling combination! If I’m craving a hearty solo meal in Gangnam again, I think I’ll stop by too :)
