Gwangju Chinese restaurant 1-person set meals: Mayway

In short

Mayway is a Chinese restaurant in Gwangsan, Gwangju, serving smoky jjamppong and Chinese dishes. Near last order, we tried a jjajang, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk set meal, yusanseulbap, and charcoal-grilled chicken. Verdict: Mayway is a filling choice for solo meals or a meal with parents.

Getting to Mayway in Cheomdan and parking

I was craving Chinese food for the first time in a while, so today I went to a great jjamppong spot in Cheomdan!!! People often think of Chinese restaurants as delivery food, but it really is delicious when you eat there.. 👍🏻

Introduction to Mayway Gwangju Cheomdan branch

It is open daily from 11:00 to 22:00, with a break from 15:00 to 17:00, and last orders are at 21:30. There is no separate parking lot ㅠㅠ! You will need to park along the road in front or in the alley behind!

It is on a main road, so it was easy to find!! Even the exterior gives off major good-restaurant vibes, haha.

A spacious, tidy dining room near last order

We visited close to last order! Since we came late, there was no one there, haha. I felt a little sorry, wondering if we had come too late.. but it was nice that we could enjoy our meal quietly! The restaurant was spacious and really clean too ✨✨

Ordering at Mayway and the self-service bar

You can order using the QR code on the table~~ There were so many delicious-looking menu items that it was hard to choose, but I loved that they had a 1-person set meal!! It saved me from agonizing over my order, haha. It was so nice not having to decide between jjajangmyeon and jjamppong, lol 🤭

Ordering the 1-person set meal

The complimentary sweet potato fries!! It looked like thinly sliced sweet potato fried without batter~ I kept reaching for these too, haha. They were sweet and nutty, perfect to have before the meal 👍🏻

The basic side dishes are set out at the self-service bar! There is even green onion kimchi~~~ Jjajangmyeon with green onion kimchi—how could that possibly be a bad combination, haha? With unlimited rice refills too, this is a place where you can really have a hearty meal! Since it was near closing, there was not much rice left, and the owner said they would make more, but I said it was okay~ The owner was really kind too 👍🏻

A 1-person set meal with jjajang, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk

We ordered the 1-person set meal with jjajang, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk (sweet and sour fried pork) 🌟 I imagined one of those half-jjajang, half-jjamppong bowls, but this kind of plate was a first for me, haha. It feels so clever, lolol. The portions are seriously generous too! If you eat it alone, you will feel like you might burst, haha. Isn't it great for eating solo too!? At a Chinese restaurant, you cannot give up jjajang, jjamppong, or tangsuyuk, and here you can have all three by yourself for around ₩10,000 👍🏻👍🏻

The deeply smoky jjamppong

This really is a great jjamppong spot... 🤤🤤 The smoky wok flavor in the jjamppong is no joke 🔥 My husband really loves smoky jjamppong and is the kind of person who goes around looking for great jjamppong places, lol, and he said it was delicious too!!!

Tender, crispy tangsuyuk

The tangsuyuk was really delicious too ㅠㅠㅠ A lot of places have tough meat in their tangsuyuk, but this meat was not tough at all—it was so tender 👏🏻👏🏻 And the batter was really crispy too!! Freshly fried tangsuyuk is always the best, right? 🥹

Thick yusanseulbap and spicy charcoal-grilled chicken

And my favorite Chinese restaurant menu item! Yusanseulbap (rice topped with stir-fried seafood and vegetables) 🫶🏻 There was not a single thing here that was not delicious~~ Mixing the rice into the thick sauce was so good ㅠㅠ There was a little chili oil on top as well, adding just a touch of heat, and it was perfect 👍🏻🧡

I was curious about the charcoal-grilled chicken, one of the signature dishes, so we ordered that too!! It was grilled chicken tossed in a spicy sauce 😆 The sauce is seriously spicy 🔥🔥 If you are not good with spicy food, it will probably be very hot for you, haha.

Charcoal-grilled chicken in spicy sauce

The spicy sauce is addictive.. 🤣 When it gets too spicy, having it with the sweet potato fries that come with it is an absolutely perfect match 👏🏻👏🏻💓 This also comes as a whole chicken, so the portion was huge!! We had a lot left, so we packed it up to take home~

Next time, I should bring my grandmother and parents here too 😆
