Hwaseong Chinese restaurant, late afternoon: jjamppong rice and
In short
Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch is a cockle-and-scallop jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) restaurant in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, with its main branch in Cheonan. Visiting past 4pm on a weekend, the writer ordered level 1 jjamppong rice, level 2 jjamppong noodles, and a small tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), finding cockles and scallops that kept coming no matter how much was scooped out, a rich broth with plenty of wok-fired flavor. The jjamppong rice even came with a couple of bites' worth of noodles, making it good for a hangover too.

My husband raved about how insanely good this cockle jjamppong was, so this time I decided to go check it out myself haha!! I was so curious what made him praise it so much~~ Here's my honest review of Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong!

Location and parking at the Dongtan Namgwangjang branch
Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong has its main branch in Cheonan (that's the one my husband went to), and the one I visited is the Dongtan Namgwangjang branch! Seems like a lot of branches have opened up recently.
Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang branch is near Dongtan 1, pretty much right in the middle of a restaurant alley, so I'd guess there's a wait at lunch and dinner!

There's a public parking lot right in front, free for up to 1.5 hours! And of course you can also park in the basement of the Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong building~

I went past 4pm on a weekend so the place was pretty quiet~~ I'd had a late breakfast so this ended up being a late lunch of jjamppong. Excited already, hehe.

Menu and spice levels
The Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong menu. You can choose cockle jjamppong as noodles or rice, and pick a spice level from 1 to 4. I went with jjamppong rice level 1, my husband had jjamppong level 2, and we also ordered tangsuyuk!

They're also running a receipt review event so you can get dumplings too — don't miss that chance~~ And the jjamppong rice comes with a little bit of noodles mixed in, which is such a nice touch!

Basic side dishes like danmuji (pickled radish) are already set on the table, and you can grab more if you need them! They also have aprons on hand, essential for jjamppong, plus baby chairs — Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong seems like a good spot to bring kids too.

Level 1 cockle jjamppong rice: cockles that keep coming no matter how much you scoop
Our order arrived! Just looking at the jjamppong rice you can tell it's rich and spicy~~~ I hadn't been to a good jjamppong place in a while so I was really craving it, and the moment the food came out I got so excited haha.

Spice level 1 was a bit milder than Shin Ramyun. But it could still be spicy for people who really can't handle heat. If you're coming with kids, I'd recommend jjajangmyeon, or the kids' jjajang for preschoolers!

Now I get why my husband raved about Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong. No matter how much you scoop out with your spoon, more cockles and scallops just keep coming... it truly lives up to its name! Every single one was plump and meaty, great to chew on, and they honestly kept turning up all the way to the last spoonful of broth lol.

The noodles in the jjamppong rice come to about two bites' worth. Eating them together with the cockles, scallops, and a spoonful of rice, the broth soaks between the grains of rice so beautifully — rich and full of that smoky wok-fired flavor, so good. Seeing this, I couldn't help thinking it'd be perfect for a hangover lol. Guess this really is a hangover-cure spot in Dongtan?

How was the small tangsuyuk?
The small-size tangsuyuk we ordered alongside the jjamppong! It comes with sweet sauce poured over it and a generous pile of onions on top.

It felt slightly overfried, but that actually made it super crispy haha. The sauce leans on the sweet side!

The meat was thick and the batter wasn't too thin either. Jjamppong alone would've felt like something's missing, so having tangsuyuk alongside it was absolutely delicious :)

Level 2 jjamppong noodles and shelled cockles
This one's what my husband ordered — jjamppong (noodles). The noodles really are good, I have to admit lol! They were well soaked in the jjamppong broth, and of course, piled high with cockles again.

Cute little cockle and scallop friends haha. My husband, who ate at the main branch early on, said that in the beginning the cockles used to come with the shell still on, but at some point they started serving them all pre-shelled! Much easier to eat, and honestly it made for a really satisfying meal!!!
Felt like we ate a whole year's worth of cockles and scallops in one sitting haha. Now I get why Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong is so famous. There's meat in it too, and broth made from cockles and meat together can't help but be rich.

A Dongtan jjamppong spot open until midnight
The Dongtan Namgwangjang branch in particular stays open until midnight, so you can grab a bowl late at night too! It'll probably get busy on weekday lunches — a solid pick for Dongtan jjamppong for sure! If you're looking for a good jjamppong restaurant in Dongtan, I'd totally recommend Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong!!! It's close to my place, so I'll be stopping by again whenever I'm craving jjamppong. Next time I'll have to try the noodle version myself~~
