Jeju grilled fish restaurant for families by Iho Tewoo: Hwadeogeuro

In short

Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang Jeju Iho Tewoo Branch is a grilled fish set restaurant right in front of Iho Tewoo Beach in Jeju, where fish is cooked in a wood-fired oven that runs above 500°C. Visiting with kids, the writer ordered the wood-fired grilled mackerel set and the Jeju grilled hairtail set, added self-bar side dishes and eggs fried at the bar, and stayed busy deboning fish because the children kept eating. Ten minutes by car from Jeju Airport with parking on site, Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang made for a satisfying family dinner.

Our kids love fish, so this was a spot I'd wanted to try in Jeju! Today we came for mackerel haha 🐟

Where is Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang, and is there parking?

It's located right in front of Iho Tewoo Beach in Jeju! It's also only about 10 minutes by car from Jeju Airport, so it's easy to stop by while traveling. There's a private parking lot, and street parking is also available in front of and behind the building, so we didn't have to worry about parking at all.

Inside the restaurant and the 500°C wood-fired oven

The full-glass windows make the interior bright and clean. There's plenty of seating, so it was comfortable to eat with the kids too. And do you see that oven! They roast the fish at over 500°C. 🔥 The point is crispy outside, moist inside. They said they use salt that's been drained of bittern for over 10 years, which made me look forward to the mackerel even more haha.

The menu ranges from grilled mackerel to Atka mackerel, Spanish mackerel and hairtail, plus pork and tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patty) sets. There was even a separate kids' set. We ordered the wood-fired grilled mackerel set and the Jeju grilled hairtail set!

What's on the self-bar, including fry-your-own eggs

On one side there's a self-bar set up like this. And you can even fry your own egg 🍳 Grilled fish plus a freshly fried egg — can't resist that combo haha.

Self-bar with nurungji and cherry tomatoes

The self-bar has side dishes that go well with the fish, and everything was neatly organized so it was easy to use. You could freely grab more of whatever ran low, and they had everything from nurungji (scorched rice) to cherry tomatoes.

Wood-fired mackerel set and Jeju hairtail set: what you get

Finally, the grilled mackerel and hairtail we ordered arrived! Since it's a full set, it comes with soup and side dishes too, and the size of the fish caught my eye right away. Golden brown from the wood-fired oven — passed the visual test already.

Mackerel and hairtail grilled golden brown in the wood-fired oven

Both the mackerel and hairtail were golden and crisp on the outside, moist and tender inside. The meat came off the bone easily, which was great for feeding the kids, but they ate so well that I was busy the whole time just deboning more fish haha.

Another day, another good eater, my chubby little Jiu 💗 She ate the fish so well, it was basically a proper mukbang moment in Jeju haha. The nice touch of coffee after the meal! They really thought through even these small details.

With fish that was golden outside and moist inside from the wood-fired oven, plus a neatly organized self-bar, it was an easy, comfortable meal. Most of all, seeing the kids eat so well made it a satisfying meal ☺️

And after seeing that oven, fish aside, I found myself wanting to try pizza baked in it next time. Am I the only one who thinks that already sounds delicious haha. Next time, pizza it is!
