Haeundae bakery café, weekday queue: egg tart & cookie, Low & Sweet

Low & Sweet Bakery is a bakery café on Haeri-dan-gil in Haeundae, Busan, about a 3-minute walk from Haeundae Station Exit 4, selling egg tarts, financiers, madeleines, canelés, cookies and croissants baked fresh every morning. Even on a weekday there was a queue at Low & Sweet Bakery, and the writer took home an egg tart, plain and chocolate financiers, and a chocolate chip cookie. With a crisp shell and custard that isn't heavy, the Low & Sweet egg tart makes the bakery an easy recommendation for egg tarts near Haeundae Station.

Masan Korean restaurant, weekday lunch wait with a baby: Yun Sikdang

Yun Sikdang (윤식당) is a Korean restaurant on Bukseong-ro in Masan, Changwon, that serves a single menu: the grilled bulgogi set (seokswae bulgogi jeongsik). On a weekday lunch visit with a baby, the writer waited in line and was then served grilled bulgogi with kimchi pancake, soy-marinated abalone and grilled fish, and the side dish refills and baby chair made the meal easy. Yun Sikdang suits families who want a hearty Korean meal without having to choose from a menu.

Daegu Korean restaurant with two kids: medium oje stir-fry, Banwoldang

Banwoldang Bujasikdang (반월당부자식당) is a Korean restaurant on Gwandeokjeong-gil in Jung-gu, Daegu, specialising in fire-grilled squid and spicy pork stir-fry. On a family meal with two kids, we ordered the stone-plate squid and pork stir-fry (oje-bokkeum) at medium spice plus Buja bibimbap, and the kids happily ate everything, including the cheonggukjang doenjang stew (fermented soybean stew) that comes with the meal. With adjustable spice levels and baby chairs, Banwoldang Bujasikdang is an easy, stress-free pick for a meal with kids in Banwoldang, Daegu.

Yangsan bakery café drive from Busan: Haereul Pumeun Dal at Choi

Choi Main Branch is a large bakery café near Hopo Station in Dong-myeon, Yangsan, Gyeongnam. On a weekday drive from Busan with her husband, the writer tried the Choi signature latte, a strawberry latte, a mango-topped pastry and Haereul Pumeun Dal (해를품은달), a bread said to be sold only at Choi, then explored the chandelier seating and the rooftop. Choi Main Branch is a good café for two to spend a relaxed afternoon just outside Busan.

Gyeongju Korean restaurant: egg rice in spicy gopchang broth, Dongyang

Dongyang Baekban Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil Main Branch is a Korean restaurant tucked down an alley off Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju. The order was hanwoo (Korean beef) gopchang hot pot, egg rice and sikhye (sweet rice drink); the hanwoo gopchang hot pot came generously filled with beef intestines and beef bulgogi, and its spice kept building until it was sweat-inducing. Verdict: Dongyang Baekban's egg rice tastes better mixed with the gopchang hot pot broth and fillings than eaten plain.

Gijang tteokgalbi restaurant: tteokbokki and japchae self-bar, Dongam

Dongam Tteokgalbi (동암떡갈비) is a tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patty) restaurant on the 3rd floor of a building on Gijanghaean-ro in Gijang, Busan. The family ordered one original tteokgalbi and one cheese tteokgalbi for lunch with two kids, and also made good use of the self-serve bar, which offers tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), japchae (glass noodles) and dessert snacks. The juicy tteokgalbi went down well even with a child just past their first birthday, making Dongam Tteokgalbi a family dining spot worth returning to.

Gyeongju fruit mochi to go: peach vs gold kiwi vs mango — Tareudang

Tareudang (타르당) is a takeout-only fruit mochi dessert shop on Sajeong-ro in Hwangnidang-gil, Gyeongju. The writer took home Tareudang's peach, gold kiwi and mango fruit mochi and compared the cream pairings one by one: the husband loved the gold kiwi, the writer loved the mango, and their child kept asking for more. Tareudang is a good takeout snack for families who want something other than bread or ice cream in Hwangnidang-gil.

Gyeongju café for melon bingsu with kids: Yellow Farm Gyeongju

Yellow Farm Gyeongju is a fresh fruit juice and bingsu (Korean shaved ice) café in Yonghwang-dong, Gyeongju. On a visit with kids, the family shared a melon bingsu heaped with melon and a watermelon juice, and the building's first-floor parking and high-ceilinged space with large windows made Yellow Farm Gyeongju an easy stop to rest during the trip. A receipt review event added a free cookie, making it a relaxed, family-friendly break in Gyeongju.

Saha, Busan rice cake shop: free milk for pregnant customers, Hohobak

Hohobak is a takeout-only rice cake (tteok) shop near Hadan Station in Saha, Busan. This visit took home a large rice castella pumpkin injeolmi (chewy rice cake coated in castella crumbs) and a 250ml bottle of premium handmade Hohobak pumpkin milk. A notice at the Hohobak counter says pregnant customers get one Hohobak milk free. The Hohobak pumpkin injeolmi was soft yet chewy, generously coated in castella crumbs, and easy to share with a child.

Munhyeon-dong Busan shabu kalguksu, seafood pancake sold out: Yunujae

Yunujae Munhyeon Shabu Kalguksu is a shabu-shabu and hand-cut noodle restaurant in Munhyeon-dong, Nam-gu, Busan, where one order brings shabu beef, house-made kalguksu noodles and fried rice. On a rainy day just after the lunch rush, the writer signed the waitlist notebook and ordered the 11,000 won shabu kalguksu with the red bone broth, while the crispy seafood pancake was already sold out. The spicy broth, chewy noodles and closing kimchi fried rice made a filling meal at Yunujae, though anyone who dislikes heat should pick the white seafood broth.

Tablet-order suyuk baekban at a Choryang gukbap spot: Yeongdong

Yeongdong Milmyeon & Dwaeji Gukbap's main branch is a Korean restaurant in Choryang, Dong-gu, Busan, near Busan Station, serving dwaeji gukbap (pork and rice soup) and milmyeon (cold wheat noodles) under one roof. Every table has a tablet for ordering and payment, and this visit brought dwaeji gukbap, suyuk baekban (boiled pork set) and mandu (dumplings), with generous chives in the side dishes and moist, tender suyuk standing out. Alternating between soup, pork and dumplings made a spread at Yeongdong Milmyeon & Dwaeji Gukbap that never felt repetitive.

Karaage add-on with a two-person sushi set in Nampo-dong: Moshi Moshi

Moshi Moshi Sushi Lotte Department Store Gwangbok is a Japanese sushi restaurant on the 10th floor of the main building of Lotte Department Store Gwangbok in Jung-gu, Busan, connected directly to Nampo Station. The two-person set came with a karaage (Japanese fried chicken) add-on and brought chashu, an assorted sushi platter and a noodle dish chosen from soba, udon or ramen, plus 2 pieces of shrimp nigiri given for a Naver receipt review. It made a generous, filling meal for two.
