Pork gukbap with a kid, dadaegi removed at Bongga Gukbap, Geoje

In short

Bongga Gukbap is a local gukbap (pork rib soup) restaurant on Giseong-ro in Geoje-myeon, Geoje. The writer ordered mixed gukbap, pork gukbap, and small suyuk (boiled pork), and with a child along, the owner made a clear-broth pork gukbap without dadaegi (chili paste) and even provided a baby spoon. Opening at 7:30 AM, it's a great first meal for a Geoje trip.

The fairly spacious interior is kept clean and tidy, and the cute, bright, and cheerful decor all looks like the owner's own handiwork. Being able to enjoy the artwork in such a pleasant space felt like getting two things at once.

Bongga Gukbap is a CESCO-membership managed restaurant with an open kitchen, so it's spotless. With various gukbap options at reasonable prices, it's a great menu for the whole family without breaking the bank. They say the side dishes are made in-house every day with carefully selected seasonal ingredients. The self-serve bar was both convenient and hygienic.

What we ordered

  • Mixed gukbap - ₩9,000
  • Suyuk (small) - ₩33,000

Mixed gukbap

Mixed gukbap with pork and sundae

The mixed gukbap is packed with tender pork and chewy sundae (Korean blood sausage), in a clean broth with fragrant chives and refreshing green onion. It's hearty enough for a full meal or to go with a drink, with a natural, unforced savoriness that kicked off the real eating. It warmed up a stomach worn out since the morning.

Kimchi and kkakdugi served with mixed gukbap

I also tried a bite of the kimchi and kkakdugi (radish kimchi), and wow, this is definitely the real deal. I immediately dunked a bowl of rice into the soup and dug in properly.

The pork gukbap has no fishy taste at all, just deep, natural flavor. It's spicy yet savory in a way that hits you right away, and I quietly polished off the whole bowl, face buried in it.

With a kid along, skip the dadaegi

Since I was eating with my child, I asked them to leave off the dadaegi (chili paste) on top of the pork gukbap. They were kind enough to bring out a separate clear-broth pork gukbap and even a baby spoon, which I really appreciated.

Suyuk (small) that became the best of my life

Plate of small suyuk at Bongga Gukbap

Honestly, the gukbap was great, but the suyuk (boiled pork) was the real winner here‼️ No gamy smell at all, chewy texture, juicy inside, and a subtle meaty aroma — this practically calls for a bottle of soju.

Made with fresh domestic Korean pork, the more you eat, the more the deep flavor of the suyuk fills your mouth with a satisfying texture.

Suyuk kept warm over a burner

Sweet-and-sour, perfectly fermented kimchi and salty saeujeot (salted shrimp) rounded it out. They even provided a separate burner, so we enjoyed every last piece warm, right to the end.

Was Geoje worth visiting after the heavy rains?

With the recent heavy rains in Geoje, I know a lot of people are worried about traveling here, but as of my visit on September 5, recovery had come a long way, and I had no issues getting around at all while traveling. If anything, I hope more people travel to Geoje at times like this so the local businesses can bounce back. Go Geoje 😍

If you want tender, melt-in-your-mouth suyuk and a warm, clean bowl of gukbap, go visit Bongga Gukbap, a Geoje gukbap favorite.

With reasonable prices, generous portions, a solid menu, and friendly service, I recommend Bongga Gukbap, a true local favorite.
