A full spread of intestine gukbap at Bongga Gukbap in Geoje

Traveling around Geoje, the sea is great, but you also start looking for a solid meal to fill your stomach along the way. This time I visited a gukbap (Korean soup with rice) spot in Geoje that's perfect when you're craving warm broth: Bongga Gukbap (본가국밥).

It's a gukbap restaurant that's been loved in Geoje for a long time, with a range of menu items from pork gukbap to intestine gukbap to suyuk (boiled pork) set meals. Especially while traveling, there are days when you crave something gentle on the stomach and filling rather than something spicy or heavy, and this was a great place for exactly that.

Location and parking at Bongga Gukbap

From the outside, Bongga Gukbap already has that cozy, homey gukbap-restaurant feel.

Rather than a flashy or overly styled vibe, it has that comfortable feel unique to a restaurant that's been loved in the same spot for years.

Even from a distance you could tell it was a gukbap specialist, and it had a friendly atmosphere that was easy to walk into. Parking in front of the restaurant was a plus too — space for about 5 or 6 cars.

What's the mood inside?

The clean, tidy interior of Bongga Gukbap

Walking inside, the space felt clean and tidy.

A view of the table seating at Bongga Gukbap

There were a decent number of tables set up, so it looked comfortable whether you're eating solo or with family. On one side there were some pieces the owner had made as a hobby, which felt very homey. In particular, she'd painted flower designs on rubber shoes — you could really feel her girlish sensibility in it.

It seems she's also learning calligraphy, because there were cute little touches all around. With wood accents and green plants, the space had a warm feel.

The sample suyuk (boiled pork slices) I ordered alongside the gukbap exceeded expectations.

The thinly sliced pork looked moist just to look at, and one bite confirmed a clean taste with no gamy smell at all.

As soon as the gukbap arrived, a rich broth aroma rose up, and the bowl was generously packed with intestines.

For intestine gukbap, the most important thing is always whether the smell is handled well, and the intestines at Bongga Gukbap were cleanly prepped, so I could eat without any hesitation.

It wasn't seasoned yet, so I added salted shrimp,

and a spoonful revealed a rich broth. But instead of the milky, bone-broth feel I was expecting,

it had a clear broth, which wasn't a familiar taste to me at first, but I still finished the whole bowl happily.

Kimchi served as a side dish with the gukbap

And of course, the diced radish kimchi (kkakdugi) and cabbage kimchi were essential. Kimchi really matters for gukbap, and eating it alongside the crunchy kkakdugi kept things from getting greasy all the way through. A spoonful of hot broth with a piece of kimchi on top — that combo is still the best.

Final verdict

The rich broth and cleanly prepped intestines worked well together, making it comfortable food to eat while traveling. It's especially satisfying to visit after a day at the sea when you're craving warm broth.

The clean interior, easy parking, and generous portions all added up to a satisfying visit overall.
