Today, I’m sharing my visit to Jeonju House, a spot in Yuseong, Daejeon where you can enjoy properly deep, flavorful Korean food. You know those days when you crave a spicy, richly brothy dish? I had a great opportunity to visit, and from the lovingly prepared side dishes to the cauldron galbi kimchi stew arriving at a lively boil, I was seriously impressed by both the look and taste.

Jeonju House had me excited from the entrance
Located in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, Jeonju House looked like a real local food favorite from the moment I arrived. Huge yellow banners reading “fresh pork belly on a pot lid” and “galbi kimchi stew” covered the exterior, so it was easy to spot even from a distance.
What especially caught my eye was the row of countless onggi, traditional earthenware jars, along one side of the yard. It instantly raised my expectations—I thought I was really going to taste that home-cooked touch and the deep flavor of properly aged kimchi.

Inside, the dining hall was very spacious and neatly kept. The tables were generously spaced, so it looked ideal for group gatherings or family meals, and the overall atmosphere felt warm and welcoming.

There was also a neatly arranged self-service station on one side, thoughtfully stocked with extra side dishes, tofu, aprons, and more for guests to help themselves.

We ordered the restaurant’s signature cauldron galbi kimchi stew!
Neat side dishes and freshly cooked cauldron rice

After ordering, a neat spread of side dishes was set on the table. There was salad topped with a refreshing dressing, crisp seasoned bean sprouts, savory seasoned chives, and deeply flavored aged-kimchi pickles. Nothing was overly seasoned, and it was all clean-tasting—just right for waking up the appetite before the stew began to boil.

And one of this place’s biggest highlights is the cauldron rice and sungnyung (scorched-rice tea)! First, scoop the glossy pot rice mixed with black rice into your bowl. Then pour warm water from the kettle into the pot, and after your meal you can enjoy the nutty sungnyung made from the crisp rice crust. Kimchi stew and sungnyung together—what more is there to say? That’s a true Korean-meal finish!

Deep, rich cauldron galbi kimchi stew
At last, the day’s main event, the cauldron galbi kimchi stew, appeared! The whole hefty, handsome cauldron pot was set over the flame, and its presentation alone was commanding.
A whole head of well-aged kimchi sat inside, with spicy peppers and a deeply infused red broth bubbling away.
They lifted the kimchi with tongs and snipped it into pieces with scissors. It was so thoroughly softened that it cut apart tenderly along its layers.

The stew was packed with large, thick pieces of galbi. The meat had been simmered long enough that the bones and meat separated softly and easily. Wrapping a piece of moist, odor-free galbi with a slice of well-aged kimchi and placing it over fresh pot rice was simply amazing—the spicy kick and the meat’s savory richness burst across my mouth.
The broth, too, had a refreshing yet intense savory flavor drawn from the deeply aged kimchi rather than an artificial seasoning taste. I just couldn’t put my spoon down.

Packing leftovers and the packaging fee
One thing I felt during the meal was how generous the owner was. There was no skimping on galbi, and the amount of kimchi and broth was truly enormous. The two of us ate as hard as we could until we were bursting, yet there was still quite a lot of stew left.
It felt such a waste to leave behind that rich broth and remaining meat, so I asked a staff member to pack up the leftovers!
Please note: A ₩1,000 container fee is added when packing leftovers.
These days, many places charge separately for packaging because of environmental concerns or the cost of sanitary containers. But for just ₩1,000 extra, they neatly packed it into a container and bagged it up, so I could take it home and simmer it for a satisfying meal the next day. It was absolutely not an expense I regretted!

And after the meal, of course, a cup of instant mix coffee! The perfect finiiiish!
- Excellent deep-aged kimchi and wonderfully tender galbi
- Fresh cauldron rice plus sungnyung for a perfect finish
- A self-service station and a neat selection of side dishes
- Generous portions; leftovers can be packed for an additional ₩1,000
I was so satisfied with this meal in terms of portion size, flavor, and care that I can confidently recommend it. When you’re craving a spicy, hearty Korean meal, be sure to give it a visit!
