Yuseong Korean restaurant with free tofu for kimchi stew: Jeonju House

In short

Jeonju House is a Korean restaurant in Yuseong, Daejeon, serving galbi kimchi jjigae in a cauldron and pot rice. We added as much tofu as we liked from the self-service bar, then enjoyed a huge fluffy egg roll and sungnyung. Verdict: a filling pick when you want galbi kimchi stew with extra tofu.

Jeonju House location, parking, and evening atmosphere

Whenever I ate at Oncheon Kalguksu, a popular spot in Yuseong, I kept noticing this galbi kimchi jjigae place across the street that I hadn't known about. I was always curious, and I finally went this time~!

🅿️ Jeonju House doesn't have its own parking lot, but they said you can park in the alley by the rear entrance or around Gyeryong Spatel~

The tables were divided between the two sides from the entrance, and even though it was before 7 p.m., the restaurant looked really busy..! Luckily, there was a table available 😮💨

Ordering galbi kimchi jjigae and egg roll

We ordered two servings of cauldron galbi kimchi jjigae for ₩15,000 and an egg roll for ₩10,000 ✔️

They gave us individually packaged water! When we finished it and asked, they brought over a water pitcher~

The basic sides were cabbage water kimchi, salad, seasoned cucumber pickles, mung bean sprout namul, and seasoned chives. Everything was good, but I really love water kimchi, so the tangy, nicely fermented cabbage water kimchi was especially delicious 🫶🏻

The bowls for the kimchi stew and rice looked like fancy tableware you'd use at home, so I took a photo haha

Aged-kimchi galbi stew arrived five minutes after ordering

The restaurant was definitely busy, but the galbi kimchi jjigae and scorched-rice pot rice came out just five minutes after we ordered 🫶🏻

It had very well-aged kimchi in it, making the whole thing look even more exciting! ✨ We cut all the aged kimchi into bite-size pieces with scissors, then kept it simmering away so it would get even tastier~

Take as much tofu as you want from the self-service bar

But then the owner said there was tofu at the self-service bar, so we could add as much as we wanted...!? At most other kimchi stew places, extra tofu is an add-on menu item, but at Jeonju House it was so nice to take however much we wanted from the self-service bar~🫶🏻

Since we'd ordered egg roll too, we took what felt like a reasonable amount of tofu, added it in, and brought the stew back to a boil~😆

Scorched-rice pot rice and a giant egg roll

Meanwhile, time to make sungnyung (scorched-rice tea) from the stone pot rice~

Making sungnyung from stone-pot rice

I opened the stone-pot rice lid and poured in hot water to make sungnyung, but it wasn't just plain water—it was tea, maybe Solomon's seal tea? Or barley tea?!!

Then, at just the right moment, our giant egg roll appeared...🍳 Such thoughtful service: ketchup came separately too, for people who love a plain, classic egg roll!! 🥫

Large egg roll served with ketchup

The egg roll was so huge that I wanted to compare it to my hand, but the comparison didn't quite work 😅 Still, I think it was honestly the biggest egg roll I've ever seen!

One piece of egg roll was too big to fit in one bite! So soft and fluffy—absolute honeyed goodness 😋

We dipped it in ketchup too~ You already know the kimchi stew-and-egg-roll combination, right...? 👍🏻 Then we properly started on the kimchi stew with galbi. The ribs were chewy and clean-tasting—galbi really is the best!!

The aged kimchi wasn't overly soft, and it was pleasantly tangy and perfectly fermented, so delicious~ Even though I wasn't hungry, kimchi stew and white rice are magic together 🧚

Even after finishing the rice and getting full, I just can't resist scorched rice~~🥹

We thoroughly enjoyed the scorched rice with kimchi stew, then finished up very full with the sungnyung~✌🏻

Aged-kimchi jars and an evening wait

On the way out, I spotted earthenware jars in the yard. Could all of that be aged kimchi...? Maybe this is the secret behind a truly great restaurant...🔥

Lots of tables had galbi kimchi jjigae, but since it was the weekend, lots were also having fresh pork belly on a pot lid, you know? Judging from the color and smell of the meat, the pork belly must be delicious too... There was even a wait while we were eating, and it was so fascinating to see international visitors who had come for authentic Korean food too haha

I recommend the galbi kimchi jjigae at Jeonju House, a great Korean restaurant in Yuseong, Daejeon~
