I visited Dutumhoe Dongmun Market Main Branch (두툼회 동문시장 본점), a great place for takeaway sashimi at Jeju's Dongmun Market. It is a sashimi shop where you can take away various combinations of fish, including flounder, salmon, and sweet shrimp, as well as sushi, all at the market's characteristically reasonable prices.

The market atmosphere before the night market opened

We visited around 4:10 PM. The night market had not opened yet, but there were already quite a few people inside the market.

There were plenty of customers coming for takeaway too, and even outside night-market hours, you could still feel the market's lively energy.

Ordering flounder sashimi and mackerel pressed sushi

There were several combinations of sashimi here, including flounder, salmon, and sweet shrimp, and the sushi selection was varied as well.

After some deliberation, we chose the flounder sashimi (₩25,000). For sushi, the mackerel pressed sushi (godeungeo bongchobap), marked BEST, also went into our order—we were in Jeju, after all, so we thought we should try the mackerel too.

The coconut shrimp displayed at the front also looked delicious, so we bought an extra box. It contained eight pieces and cost ₩10,000.

The sashimi and sushi were packed separately in a blue insulated bag with the shop name on it, so we could carry them back to the accommodation without worry. The coconut shrimp was packed separately in a bag with sweet chili sauce.

Trying the takeaway sashimi and sushi at our accommodation

Once we arrived at the accommodation, we unpacked all the food we had brought back.

Along with the flounder sashimi and mackerel pressed sushi, the insulated bag contained wasabi, soy sauce, chogochujang (sweet-tangy chili dipping sauce), chopsticks, ginger, rinsed aged kimchi, and a small dish for soy sauce.

First, the flounder sashimi was nicely thick. It was fresh, and the portion was more generous than expected, so we enjoyed it very satisfactorily.

You cannot leave out Hallasan when you are in Jeju, so we had Hallasan soju with it too. As expected, soju went wonderfully with the sashimi.

The mackerel pressed sushi had no fishy taste, and the rice was seasoned just right. The mackerel itself was mild yet had a pleasantly rich fattiness, which was delicious.

Even though the coconut shrimp had cooled down over time, the coating was still crisp and the shrimp retained a springy texture. Dipped in the sweet chili sauce, it gained an extra sweetness that worked really well, and it would make a good beer snack too.

Overall, the selection was good for the price, and I was satisfied with the food quality too. We could take away everything from various sashimi and sushi to mackerel pressed sushi and fried shrimp, and the insulated bag and side dishes meant we could eat right away without preparing anything separately.
