These days everyone seems to be out eating shrimp except me, so I couldn't be left behind — I went on a raw shrimp sashimi run in Incheon!
What a Saturday night looks like at Veteran General Fish Market Incheon Guwol Branch
The place I visited was Veteran General Fish Market Incheon Guwol Branch (베테랑종합어시장 인천구월점). Trying to get there on a Saturday evening, I found the place packed — a proper hotspot!! I rushed in shouting that in my head, haha.
Out front you could see them catching fish straight from the tank, and the place was so clean I could tell I could eat here with total trust.

Is the 7,000-won lunch special worth it at Veteran Guwol?

Between 11 AM and 3 PM, you can enjoy a cheap lunch special of sashimi bibimbap or fish roe rice bowl. Getting a full meal for ₩7,000 in this day and age!! If you live nearby, I definitely recommend stopping by for lunch at least once!!

Walking in, I found rows of tables full of people. There were plenty of staff too, all really friendly, and even with the crowd the place stayed overall spotless, so I could eat comfortably and with trust! It felt like the perfect spot for a family meal out or a gathering with friends. I love this kind of atmosphere, so I went in tonight thinking I'd drink up a storm, haha!

Since shrimp is in season these days, they had shrimp menu items posted right on the wall. Shrimp sashimi jumping fresh~! It gave off real shrimp-sashimi-specialist vibes.
Second-stop order: small raw shrimp sashimi and mul-hoe

The shrimp sashimi comes in mini, small, medium, and large sizes, so you can order exactly the amount you want — I loved that! Since this was our second stop of the night, we wanted something simple, so we ordered raw shrimp sashimi (small) and mul-hoe!! You all know shrimp sashimi absolutely calls for soju, right?? It's mandatory!
Side dishes and the self-serve corner at Veteran Guwol
Once we ordered, the staff set out the side dishes. I love wasabi, especially fresh grated wasabi. Fresh wasabi plus salted pollack roe among the side dishes — loved it from the start!

Sometimes at sashimi restaurants the soy sauce and vinegar-gochujang bottles are dirty and it puts me off, but here at Veteran General Fish Market Incheon Guwol Branch everything was kept clean, which made me happy!

You can tell the self-serve corner is spotless too, right? The ramen noodle add-ins seemed to be unlimited! Toss ramen noodles into the spicy fish stew and I feel like I could just keep eating forever.
How does the mul-hoe taste, and how many shrimp in a small order?
We chatted over the seaweed soup that arrived first, and soon our order came out.

I expected mul-hoe to be the brothy style, but here it had no broth at all — the seasoning was thick and rich. It's somewhere between a regular mul-hoe and a spicy raw fish salad, and personally I loved this thick style too!! There was plenty of raw fish, and mixed together with the vegetables it was tangy and spicy and delicious. The flying fish roe popped too, great texture!
The raw shrimp sashimi, even in small size, came out generously with about 15 shrimp. No fishy taste at all, plump and springy as a given, and you could really taste that distinct sweet shrimp flavor — loved it. It's amazing eaten plain, and depending on your taste you can pair it with seaweed, aged kimchi, or wasabi for a variety of different flavors. The sashimi soy sauce tasted like it was homemade, sweet and delicious, and paired perfectly with the shrimp! The fried shrimp heads were crispy and nutty, the kind of thing that goes down easy with drinks. Easy to pull the head off by hand too, so very convenient to eat!!
Self-serve kimchi pancake zone and free ice cream dessert

Another great thing about Veteran Fish Market is that they have a self-serve pancake station!! I remember doing self-serve buckwheat pancakes at another restaurant before, but this was my first time with kimchi pancake. My friends and I had a blast competing over who could fry the best one! The batter was tasty and the frying itself was so fun that we kept going!! If you visit as a family outing, it'd be fun for the kids to fry their own too, haha. If you're a kimchi pancake fanatic, you absolutely have to come and eat at least 10 of them! You can see the pancake station is kept clean too, right?

And finally, once you finish your meal, there's a coffee and ice cream dessert corner to enjoy on your way out~!! Is there any sashimi restaurant that gives you more than this... No matter how full you are, ice cream still finds room — pure magic. I didn't miss the chance and scooped up a full cup of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry ice cream, haha!!
Why Veteran General Fish Market Incheon Guwol Branch is worth a return visit
- ✔️ The whole restaurant is so clean you can eat with total peace of mind! From the outdoor tank, the self-serve side dish corner, the self-serve pancake station, the tableware and sauce containers, to the restroom — you could see the attention paid to cleanliness everywhere
- ✔️ Great value on the raw shrimp sashimi and mul-hoe! With so many size options, it's also great when you want to try a variety of dishes at once
- ✔️ Self-serve kimchi pancakes and an ice cream dessert! The pancake batter was solid, and these days few places offer an ice cream dessert, so finding one again after a while made for a happy ending to the meal
Overall I loved it so much that I'll definitely be back with friends whenever we want live-fish sashimi or raw shrimp. 100% would return!! If you want to enjoy raw shrimp sashimi in season right now at a great price, or want a cheap lunch of fish roe rice or sashimi bibimbap, head straight to Veteran General Fish Market Incheon Guwol Branch!
