Namdong raw fish restaurant with salmon stew: Veteran Fish Market

It had been a while since I’d had really good seafood, so while deciding on dinner, we chose to try the Premium Live Fish Assorted Sashimi (Small) at Veteran General Fish Market by Incheon City Hall.

When two people want to eat lots of different seafood

You know those days when you’re dining as a pair and want to try a little of everything? Ordering just one dish feels like a shame, but ordering too much can be a lot. On days like that, a mixed platter that lets you enjoy several kinds of seafood at once feels just right.

Veteran General Fish Market is a well-known raw fish restaurant in Guwol-dong!! It seemed like a menu that would suit two people, and when the food arrived, it was great to be able to sample so many different things.

The fun of picking your way through assorted live-fish sashimi

I think the biggest advantage of a mixed menu is getting to enjoy many different foods at one table. Even when there’s seafood I want, I often end up ordering just one dish, but with a mixed platter, you can taste a little of each thing without getting tired of it.

As we picked at things one by one, we naturally had more to talk about, and it was lovely for a slow meal for two. If you love seafood in particular, I think this kind of mixed menu would be really satisfying.

There was saury, too! Wrapped with gim (seaweed) and wasabi, it was sooo good haha.

We added albap (fish roe rice)!!!!

They gave us plenty of wasabi, too,

and the ssamjang (savory dipping paste) was so good as well haha.

Overall, all the side dishes were so tasty haha.

I was happy they served baekgimchi (white kimchi), too!!

Foods from the sea are fun to taste one by one, since each kind has a slightly different texture and flavor.

There’s even a space where you can make your own kimchi pancake hahaha.

We sampled the chewy textures, enjoyed the clean flavors, and picked through the seafood, seaweed and side dishes that suited our tastes. Before we knew it, the plates were gradually empty. 😊

An evening’s fatigue melts away in front of seafood

Sitting together after work or on a weekend evening, with delicious seafood in front of us and chatting about this and that, made the day’s fatigue feel a little lighter. Even when it isn’t a special day, choosing one good meal can make the evening pretty enjoyable.

I thought it would work nicely as a date meal for couples, or as a generous meal to share with friends or family.

After sashimi, a warming salmon spicy fish stew

After enjoying the assorted seafood, it felt a little sad to stop at just sashimi. So, the spicy fish stew we ordered alongside it! Was it complimentary, or were we just lucky?! It was absolutely packed with salmon… wow hahaha. It was my first time having salmon spicy fish stew hahaha.

After seafood, the warm, spicy broth brought a whole different feeling. With the bubbling stew in front of us, I tried a spoonful of broth first, and the spicy-hot broth felt like it was warming me from the inside.

At first, I wondered whether we could eat much stew because we were already fairly full, but once the broth came out, we kept reaching for it. 😂 We even made ramyeon in it hahaha.

It was good with rice, and since it also made a great meal on its own, I was glad we added the spicy fish stew. Personally, rather than having only the assorted seafood, I’d recommend ordering the assorted couple set together with the stew.

A generous sashimi-and-stew meal for two

The Veteran Premium Live Fish Assorted Sashimi (Small) and spicy fish stew we tried this time were great choices when you want to eat a wide variety of seafood. For two people, enjoying different seafood with an assorted live-fish platter and finishing warmly with stew seems like a nice plan.

It’s a great combination for a delicious dinner date, or for a day when seafood and a glass of soju sound good!

Most of all, it was fun tasting each item one by one, so the meal never got boring, and finishing with the stew made for a very filling meal. Next time I’m craving seafood, I’d like to visit again and try other dishes, too.
