Private-room abalone dinner in Namdong, Incheon: Jeonbokchon

As the weather turned pleasantly cool, I found myself wanting to go out for a meal with my husband and child for the first time in a while.

I was wondering if there was something special besides the meat we eat all the time, when Jeonbokchon, a Guwol-dong restaurant I had noticed on the way to the cinema before, came to mind. Our company CEO had recommended it too, so I trusted it even more—and abalone happened to be in season, so it felt just right.

Jeonbokchon is an Incheon Korean restaurant offering a variety of abalone course meals with fresh live abalone delivered daily from Wando. It has private rooms for four to eight people as well as banquet rooms for 16 to 20, so I heard it is frequently chosen for family gatherings and formal meetings between families. Corkage and parking are available too, which made things easy without much planning.

Once we spotted the sign and went up the stairs, the entrance was right there. Perhaps because there were trees between the buildings, the first impression was calmer than I expected, and the basement-parking signs were clear enough that parking did not seem like much of a concern.

A private room that was comfortable with a child

The first thing I noticed upon entering was the many separate rooms. We went into the room we were shown, and although it looked like floor seating, the table had space underneath to stretch out our legs, so it was comfortable even for a long meal. Each room even had air conditioning and clothes hangers, which felt thoughtfully considered.

Let me pause for a little personal note here. Once we closed the door, it was lovely to talk comfortably without worrying about the next table. I could see why people recommend this Guwol-dong restaurant for formal family meetings or family gatherings.

What I liked most was being able to eat comfortably with our child without feeling self-conscious. It had been a while since our family had sat face-to-face so leisurely, and even my mind felt at ease.

What came with the abalone set meal?

Looking at the menu, the options were arranged as the Jangsu Set Meal, Abalone Set Meal, and Main Set Meal, with a separate weekday-only lunch special as well. We all chose the signature Abalone Set Meal. It was around the high ₩30,000s per person, though I recommend confirming the exact price at the restaurant.

When the table began filling up, I was genuinely surprised.

From fried items such as shrimp tempura and pollock to live abalone sashimi, steamed abalone, abalone sushi and rolls, and a dressed dish made with abalone innards, the table was completely full.

It was not just abalone, either: japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), napa-cabbage kimchi, and a salad with vegetables made the spread feel quite substantial.

The abalone sashimi arrived first, served right in its shell. As I gently scooped up the flesh with a spoon, its crisp, pleasantly chewy texture came through clearly. It was clean-tasting, with no fishiness at all and a subtle sweetness. Even my child, who usually cannot eat much raw fish, tried a piece and their eyes went wide. Dipping it lightly in the abalone-innard sauce brought out a rich nutty flavor, and I kept reaching for more.

The shrimp tempura was crisp outside and moist inside, with the simple goodness of well-made fried food. Dipped in the lemon sauce, it tasted clean rather than heavy.

The dressed dish with abalone innards was tossed with napa cabbage and vegetables, and its savory, lightly salty umami spread gently across the palate. Honestly, I had always eaten abalone only steamed or in porridge. It was fascinating to try it as sashimi, sushi, and a dressed dish, all in one sitting.

This place is truly an abalone party.

As our family talked about each dish while eating, it felt like more than simply having a meal—it became time to talk. Thanks to a meal like this, the weekend felt much more satisfyingly full.

The beef bulgogi (marinated beef) in its earthenware pot stayed warmly bubbling, and because the seasoning was not overpowering, it was perfect with rice.

At the end came seaweed soup with abalone, rice, and basic side dishes. The broth was clean, so even after such a hearty meal, we could finish without feeling weighed down.
