Rainy-day couple lunch at a Yeonnam pork cutlet spot: Katsu Monster
In short
Katsu Monster Yeonnam Main Branch is a 200-hour dry-aged pork cutlet restaurant a 5-minute walk from Hongik University Station Exit 3 in Mapo, Seoul. On a rainy day the writer and her boyfriend ordered the premium loin katsu (gabisal) for 16,000 won and the kimchi katsu nabe for 16,000 won, eaten with kelp and hijiki rice and a punchy kimchi broth. The juicy, well-marbled loin katsu was the standout, making Katsu Monster worth a return visit for a Yeonnam-dong date lunch.

Quick summary first

Kimchi katsu nabe you have to eat on a rainy day, gabisal sangloscatsu that bursts with juice the second you bite in — this is Katsu Monster Yeonnam Main Branch, a Yeonnam-dong date spot. Let's get into it!
Why we chose Katsu Monster for a rainy Yeonnam-dong date lunch

After finishing up our schedule, my boyfriend and I were debating lunch, and when he said he wanted pork cutlet, his soul food, I quickly searched and found this place. We usually go to this alley on our Yeonnam-dong dates, so I wanted to try somewhere different this time — but since it was raining, hot soup sounded good too, so we went in with high expectations.

It's an easy stop whether you're doing a Yeonnam-dong date or a Yeonnam-dong food tour. It's also close to Hongik University Station, so it pairs well with a Hongdae food crawl.

The red sign at the mouth of the alley made it easy to spot. Seeing the standing sign reading "200-hour dry-aged premium pork cutlet" got me curious about the aging concept — and since this was an alley I often walk through when looking for Yeonnam-dong restaurants, it felt familiar.

Inside Katsu Monster: atmosphere and what the store provides
Inside Katsu Monster Yeonnam Main Branch was bigger and had higher ceilings than I expected, so it never felt cramped. You could catch glimpses of the cooking process through the open kitchen, which gave it a clean, hygienic feel, and watching the music program on the wall-mounted TV while we waited kept boredom away.

There's a basket with disposable mouthwash, hair ties, and even candy, handy for those quick emergencies.
The bite-sized spicy curry coupon event
It can be used in-store, through Naver Reservations, or Naver Order. It's only valid alongside another menu order, can be issued and used once total, and can't be combined.

The menu ranges from the classic loin katsu and fillet katsu to assorted katsu, mixed katsu, and triple katsu, organized by cut. There are also nabe, udon, and curry dishes, so just reading the menu took us a while!
Premium loin katsu (gabisal), 16,000 won: how juicy was it?

Having the gabisal (pork skirt) cut attached is the whole point of this dish. The meaty aroma was so intense I could feel the juices seeping out the moment I cut it with my chopsticks — the coating was thin and crisp while the inside stayed moist.

The fat layer on the gabisal side in particular was so soft and nutty that it might rank among the best pork cutlets I've ever had!

Even the rice wasn't plain white rice — it came as kelp and hijiki rice, adding a fragrant depth of flavor, which made me feel like this place pays attention to even the small details.
Kimchi katsu nabe, 16,000 won: the broth for a rainy day

This dish pairs pork cutlet with a spicy kimchi broth. The broth was vivid red and thick, clearly looking spicy at first glance, and one spoonful confirmed a deep savoriness underneath the heat.

Even as a nabe ingredient, the pork cutlet was cut thick enough that it stayed crisp instead of going soggy after sitting in the broth for a while, which impressed me. I'm not great with spicy food, but the heat here wasn't overwhelming, so I could enjoy it comfortably to the end.
Is Katsu Monster worth it for a Yeonnam-dong date meal?
We came for a Yeonnam-dong date, and both the food and the atmosphere were satisfying enough that I'd want to come back. It's good enough to add to a Hongdae food list, and if you're looking for Hongdae restaurants or Yeonnam-dong restaurants, it's worth a visit. (I'm already planning to come back for the tenderloin next time!!)
