Horangi Gotgan Gongdeok Branch: a short walk from Gongdeok Station
There's a gukbap (soup and rice) place near my home called Horangi Gotgan that opened a few months ago. I live around Gongdeok Station so I pass by it often. But every lunchtime the place is packed with a wait, so I thought, it must be that good! and finally went to check it out. It's tucked in an alley near Gongdeok Elementary School and Mapo T-Tower, and the red awning makes it easy to spot.
Very much an office-workers' favorite — they even set up a menu board outside. Nice touch, since you can browse the menu while waiting and order quickly once you're seated.

I browsed outside and picked my order before going in, but honestly everything looked so good it was hard to choose 🥹 Since it's a newly opened place, the exterior is so clean and tidy, isn't it?

Is Horangi Gotgan busy on weekends?
East Mapo has a certain quirk — places are usually only packed on weekdays, since there are so many offices around. On weekends, most restaurants are empty or don't even open. So I went on a weekend hoping for a relaxed meal with some photos, but what is this? It was nearly full. Let me correct myself: it's both an office-workers' favorite and a local favorite.

Being a new spot, the interior overall felt clean and bright. Wood-toned chairs paired with red tables that matched the awning gave Horangi Gotgan its own signature look. The floor-to-ceiling windows kept it from feeling stuffy. With tables ranging from 2 to 4 seats, it seemed good for solo diners, office lunches, or groups eating together.
True to its name (Horangi Gotgan means "tiger's storehouse"), there's a big tiger poster on the wall — eating here, you might just pick up some tiger strength as a bonus. Even the staff's t-shirts have tigers on them. So cute! On the ceiling, I noticed a unique decoration that looked like bundled straw. Between the tiger art and the straw decor, it had a fun feel — like an old-fashioned storehouse dressed up in a modern way. Little details like these kept it from feeling like just another plain Korean restaurant.

Each table has a tablet installed, so you can browse the menu and order right from your seat — very convenient. They were also running a review event. Write a review and you can get one of the following as a free extra: mini kimchi pancake (3pc), juicy mandu (2pc), or a drink. Don't miss it if you're eating there!
There's even a hair tie ready on the table, so you don't have to eat your hair along with your meal. I really love this kind of thoughtful touch 🥹 Salt and pepper are also provided, so season to taste.

At the self-serve bar you can grab unlimited kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) and onions, but please take only what you'll eat, for the environment's sake. Small side plates are ready too, so just grab and use.
What to order: sagolbap, spicy tripe sagolbap and juicy tteokgalbi
Horangi Gotgan's signature dish is sagolbap — rice in broth simmered from 100% Korean beef bones, topped generously with beef — so I ordered sagolbap (₩10,000), spicy tripe sagolbap (₩13,000), and juicy tteokgalbi (₩9,000). The food came out not long after ordering. It really was generous, with so much meat piled on that I figured this would be proper nourishment.

It came in elegant brass bowls, which gave it a neat, upscale feel. Most gukbap places serve in stone pots, and I have a sensitive mouth, so when it comes in a stone pot I usually can't eat it for 10-15 minutes because it's too hot, and even after scooping it into another bowl, the roof of my mouth still gets burned and peels every time. But with the brass bowl, it wasn't too hot and stayed at just the right temperature, so I could slurp it right down.
Sagolbap: clean beef bone broth loaded with meat
The milky bone broth had way more meat piled on than I expected. At first I thought the meat was just a thin layer on top, but once I dug in with the spoon, chunky pieces and hand-torn shredded beef just kept coming. The rice isn't served separately — it's already in the broth. Taking a big spoonful of meat and rice together felt filling from the very first bite!
The broth looked like it would be rich and heavy, but it was surprisingly clean and mild. Not an aggressive flavor at all — the kind everyone, young or old, would like. My kid dug right in saying it was so good. I'm pretty sure they said they were full earlier... but they ate so well. Pairing it with kkakdugi or pickled onion to taste makes it even better. My kid loved the kkakdugi, but my personal pick was the pickled onion ❤️
How spicy is the spicy tripe sagolbap?
I was craving something spicy so I ordered the spicy tripe sagolbap. Unlike the regular sagolbap, the broth was red and rich from the start, looking spicy just at a glance.

The savory flavor unique to bone broth combined with the spiciness made it thoroughly warming and hearty — exactly the flavor I wanted! Ever since marrying my spice-averse husband, I haven't been able to eat spicy food much, but sometimes I get a craving for something hot and sharp. This dish wasn't overly spicy, so there was no risk of an upset stomach, while still delivering that hot, sharp kick — I loved it.

Like the regular sagolbap, this one also had plenty of chunky meat pieces and generous hand-torn shreds. On top of that, there was tripe (gopchang) mixed in, so every spoonful was loaded with hearty bits. The tripe was chewy and savory, pairing well with the spicy broth, and the chives mixed in helped cut through any richness.
The rice comes already mixed into the broth, so it had soaked up plenty of the liquid and just slid right down. I ate mine only with my favorite pickled onion, and it paired so well. Highly recommend this combo.

Juicy tteokgalbi, the dish the kid ate most
Since eating just the soup rice felt a bit plain, my kid asked for tteokgalbi (grilled minced beef patties) too, so we ordered one. It comes with two patties as a base, plus a side of scallion salad. Served sizzling on a hot plate, it looked so tasty from the moment it arrived.

We ate it cut with scissors — just ask the staff and they'll bring you a pair.

The outside was grilled to a nice golden brown. Once cut open, the inside was moist and still had plenty of juice left. The sweet-and-savory sauce meant my kid ate it up happily, and since I'd ordered a hot and spicy soup, pairing it with the sweet-salty tteokgalbi worked really well — two different flavors complementing each other. This combo is great too 👍

I also tried the chive salad that came alongside with the tteokgalbi, and the sweet, rich flavor of the patty combined with the sharp, refreshing chives made it even better.

With its overall clean atmosphere, generous portions of meat in the sagolbap that filled you up with just one bowl, and prices that weren't a burden, this seemed like a solid spot for Gongdeok office workers' lunches or a hearty meal for local residents. The sagolbap, spicy tripe sagolbap, and tteokgalbi were all genuinely delicious, and I left satisfied. My kid especially loved it and, walking out of the restaurant, kept begging, "Let's come again next time!" haha. Having menu items that satisfy both kids' and adults' tastes made it a good spot to visit as a family too. Horangi Gotgan Gongdeok Branch is a place I'd want to return to whenever I'm craving a hearty, delicious Korean meal in Gongdeok. 🐯🍚
