Flying fish roe buckwheat gimbap for brunch hangover cure: Gossi's
In short
Gossi's Donghae Makguksu & Sundubu Kalguksu Main Branch is a makguksu (buckwheat noodle) restaurant right across from Gangmun Beach in Gangneung, Gangwon, with floor-to-ceiling ocean-view windows. The writer had a brunch-hangover-cure combo of a two-person set — water makguksu, spicy makguksu and boiled pork — plus an added flying fish roe buckwheat gimbap, which turned out to be the best gimbap of her life. The third floor allows dogs, so she's already planning a return trip with her pup.

After a satisfying takeout sashimi feast in Jumunjin the day before, my husband and I headed toward Gangmun Beach the next morning for a refreshing brunch. Gangneung has no shortage of famous foods, but for a brunch situation, nothing beats a cold bowl of makguksu, right?
Today I'm writing about a proper makguksu spot I discovered in Gangneung — my visit report on Gossi's Donghae Makguksu & Sundubu Kalguksu Main Branch⋆⁺₊✧

Second-floor ocean-view seats with floor-to-ceiling windows and self-serve bar

We were guided upstairs to the second floor for our meal, and the moment we walked in, the wide-open ocean view through the floor-to-ceiling windows facing us was breathtaking! It's literally right in front of the sea, so we got to eat while looking out at the cool ocean — a true view-and-food spot,,,🩵

Each table had a kiosk installed, so ordering was really simple.

The self-serve bar was also managed hygienically and neatly, and there were plenty of aprons available, so we were fully set up to eat without worrying about splashes on our clothes.👍

There was also a well-organized self-serve baby chair corner off to the side, which made me think this place would be great for family meals with kids or for bringing your parents.˙˚ଘo(∗ ❛ั ᵕ ❛ั )੭່˙
Dog-friendly seating on the third floor, a real touching point
And there's something that genuinely moved me!!!! Since we have a dog back at my parents' place, I'm usually really interested in dog-friendly restaurants.✨🐶🐶 This place lets you dine with your dog on the third floor of the building!!!
It's such a precious dog-friendly restaurant where you can eat comfortably without worrying about anyone's stares, so I've decided I absolutely have to come back next time with my dog Gyeoul.👍
What we ordered: the two-person set + flying fish roe buckwheat gimbap

We got the two-person set that comes with water makguksu, spicy makguksu, and tender boiled pork, and added a flying fish roe buckwheat gimbap (seaweed rice roll)!
Flying fish roe buckwheat gimbap: crowned best gimbap of my life

The flying fish roe buckwheat gimbap came out first... this is absolutely something you MUST try!!
They generously piled on the popping flying fish roe without holding back,, and the combination of the nutty buckwheat texture with the roe worked so well together that my husband and I both got wide-eyed the moment we took a bite haha😮😮

Crowned: best gimbap of my life,,
Water and spicy makguksu, refreshing enough to cure a hangover

The water makguksu and spicy makguksu that came out next also passed the visual test! The portions were absolutely massive, and you could really feel the owner's generosity haha.

Adding the mustard, sugar, and vinegar provided on the table to taste, the savoriness of the seasoning and the cold broth swept through my mouth perfectly. It felt like the summer heat was wiped away in one go. Hahahaha.
While we ate, I noticed that since it was brunch time, other tables were also ordering a lot of the kalguksu and sundubu menu items! I figured everyone must have had a drink the night before and come for a spicy hangover cure haha (not-so-secretly, I also cured my own hangover with the cold makguksu broth... 🤪🤪).
I heard this place is also famous for Gangneung-style sundubu, and given the quality of the makguksu, I bet the sundubu and kalguksu are amazing too haha.
The boiled pork included in the set

The boiled pork included in the set was also cooked perfectly tender, without a hint of gamey smell. Wrapping a piece of the pork with the accompanying scallion salad and spicy cheongyang chili,,, is pure honey-flavored bliss!🫢🫢

Alternating a bite of makguksu with a bite of pork makes the perfect combo.
From the wide-open ocean view through the floor-to-ceiling windows to the generous, refreshing makguksu and the flying fish roe buckwheat gimbap, everything was satisfying about this Gangmun Beach spot in Gangneung! ✧⁺⸜(●′▾‵●)⸝⁺✧
Overall review & would I go back
- Taste & menu: the buckwheat gimbap piled high with popping flying fish roe is seriously insanely good 🍣 one sip of the ice-flecked water makguksu broth clears your gut completely, perfect hangover cure,,
- Atmosphere & view: floor-to-ceiling ocean-view windows overlooking the wide-open sea 🌊
- Service & convenience: dog-friendly seating on the third floor, a precious spot for dog families 🐶 spacious and pleasant, perfect for bringing your parents or a family meal
- Would I return: 200%! Next time I'm planning to bring Gyeoul and cure a hangover with sundubu kalguksu at the third-floor dog-friendly seats 😋😋
Thanks to the clean, spacious dining room, it works just as well for a family meal or a date course, and since it's a dog-friendly restaurant in Gangneung, if you're planning a trip to Gangneung, I highly recommend visiting Gossi's Donghae Makguksu & Sundubu Kalguksu Main Branch!
