Hongmigwan, a Chinese restaurant near Gupo Market

A late-evening visit to Hongmigwan, the homemade-noodle Chinese restaurant near Gupo Market

A late dinner at Hongmigwan after browsing Gupo Market

Hongmigwan is a well-known spot near Gupo Market (구포시장). After finishing up at the market and looking for a late dinner nearby, I stopped in.

Walking through the night air, I noticed waiting chairs set up outside — unusual for a Chinese restaurant. I'd heard there's a wait during the day, but since Chinese restaurants tend to turn tables quickly, apparently you don't have to worry about a long wait.

Since we went late, we were seated right away.

Hongmigwan menu and prices

Hongmigwan's Chinese food menu board

Hongmigwan has plenty of Chinese dishes beyond jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) — uni-jjajang (black bean noodles), fried rice, jjamppong-guksu, tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), and more.

What we ordered:

  • Uni-jjajang ₩6,000
  • Jjamppong-guksu ₩10,000
  • Mini tangsuyuk ₩9,000

These days, ordering a meal plus one side dish at a Chinese restaurant can add up fast, but Hongmigwan was relatively easy on the wallet. I later found out it's a certified good-price restaurant. The lunch set menu also looks quite appealing.

Inside the Hongmigwan dining room

At first, I honestly just thought of it as a regular Chinese restaurant near Gupo Market.

But once inside, the dining room was cleaner and more organized than I expected, with waiting chairs off to one side. I asked about the daytime wait I'd heard about, and was told the food comes out fast, so the wait doesn't drag on.

I could see the chef cooking right in the kitchen — something about the way they were dressed caught my eye from the start, so I snapped a photo. After eating, I understood why I'd had that feeling.

Uni-jjajang, 6,000 won: how the house-made noodles taste

First up, the uni-jjajang.

Handmade noodles lifted from the uni-jjajang

Even in photos the noodles look pretty springy, and eating them confirmed it — seriously chewy. Being handmade, they felt completely different from typical jjajangmyeon noodles right from the first bite. Mixed with the black bean sauce, the noodles held their bite instead of going soft too quickly, which I loved.

Jjamppong gukbap, 10,000 won: rice in the spicy broth

Next, the jjamppong-guksu.

Fluffy, well-fried fried rice

This one really stood out. The fried rice served with the jjamppong broth had grains that didn't stick together at all — perfectly loose and fluffy.

The broth had a deep flavor from seafood like clams and squid, and dipping the fried rice into it added a nutty richness. It tasted completely different from eating jjamppong and fried rice separately.

Mini tangsuyuk, 9,000 won

Last was the mini tangsuyuk.

The batter was fried up nice and crisp, and I appreciated that it wasn't greasy at all. It looked perfectly fried from the start — crispy and nutty on the outside — and even dipped in sauce, the crunch held up.

What stood out most at Hongmigwan: the noodles and the jjamppong gukbap

Personally, what surprised me most that day was the noodles and the jjamppong-guksu. The uni-jjajang in particular was far better than I expected. I walked in thinking it was just a neighborhood Chinese place, and my mind changed the moment I tasted the noodles.

The jjamppong broth had a strong, savory seafood flavor, and the fried rice was so well made that the grains seemed to drift apart like snow.

Of all the jjamppong I've had, this one ranks among the most memorable.

Is Hongmigwan worth a visit? Final verdict

I stumbled onto this place while browsing Gupo Market, and it turned out far more satisfying than expected. The chewy handmade noodles and the fried-rice-with-jjamppong combo especially stuck with me.

The interior was clean and had a self-service corner that made things easy, and on top of it all, the prices weren't a burden. I walked in with low expectations and walked out with a completely different opinion.

If you want Chinese food near Gupo Market, it's worth a visit — and next time I'm in Gupo, I'll definitely be back. Total revisit vibes.
