Magok lamb chop restaurant: French rack vs shoulder rack, Hwarodam

In short

Hwarodam Yang Kkochi Magok is a lamb chop and lamb skewer restaurant on the 2nd floor of Queens Park 10 near Balsan Station in Gangseo, Seoul. The writer brought her mom, who had been craving lamb chops, and ordered the French rack (36,000 won), shoulder rack (26,000 won), lamb rib-meat skewers (18,000 won) and Hwarodam fried rice at once to compare the texture of each cut and how it is best grilled. The French rack was so melt-in-your-mouth tender that they ordered a second serving, and the spotless room and attentive service at Hwarodam make it an easy choice for a meal with parents.

Today's story is about a visit to Hwarodam Yang Kkochi (화로담양꼬치), a great restaurant in Magok ✨ A few days ago my mom mentioned in passing that she wanted lamb chops, and the second I heard that, my own appetite shot up too! I searched for good spots nearby and found one with amazing reviews, so I whisked her off to try it.

Clean interior of Hwarodam Yang Kkochi Magok

Before I even went, I'd read a lot of reviews saying the interior was upscale, and visiting in person confirmed it — the whole place was so clean it felt perfect for bringing my parents!

Chive-flower dipping sauce and the side dishes

Table setting with cumin, secret sauce, and chive-flower sauce

The default setup was ① cumin powder, ② a secret sauce with sliced chili, and ③ chive-flower sauce. That green chive-flower sauce especially was a real find! I'm not totally sure if the chive flowers were salt-cured or just mixed with salt... haha. Either way it seemed to be given as a stand-in for plain salt, and a tiny dab on the meat was so good 💚

White kimchi and radish salad side dishes

For side dishes(?) we got baek-kimchi (white kimchi) and mu-saengchae (spicy radish salad), and the quality was excellent! Clean, tidy banchan that really woke up the appetite. I'm obsessed with bibimbap, so this mu-saengchae alone made me want to mix it into rice — it was that good lol.

The meat is grilled directly over charcoal, and even at a glance the charcoal looked really clean and good 🔥

French rack: so tender we ordered a second serving

Three pre-seared pieces of lamb French rack

The French rack we ordered first arrived. You get 3 pre-seared pieces! (This was so good we ended up ordering it again...!🤤)

French rack being pre-seared

They pre-sear it here before bringing it out,

and the staff grill it fully right at the table with real skill, then cut it into bite-sized pieces. Once it's done, they set it in front of you like this ☺️🫶

Lamb cut into bite-sized pieces

The meat itself is well-seasoned so it's tasty even plain, but pairing it with the chive-flower sauce or cumin, or eating it with the radish salad, is a heavenly combo! The texture is unbelievably tender — it just melts away in your mouth..... 🥹

A piece of lamb with sauce

I heard lamb chops taste great even when cooked less, so a lot of people go for medium-rare! So I tried it medium-rare right away, and it had zero gamey smell, juicy and really tender and delicious 👍

Cross-section of medium-rare French rack
French rack piece scored but not fully cut

I asked them to just score one piece without fully cutting it, and they did exactly that! Ugh,,, seriously so good........... 😭❤️

Shoulder rack: how its texture differs from the French rack

Lamb shoulder rack on the charcoal grill

We started eating the shoulder rack the moment it arrived so I unfortunately didn't get a full shot... (shoulder rack comes as 2 pieces total!) If French rack is fully tender, shoulder rack has a bit more chew and a livelier bite. So it felt better suited to grilling it a little more well-done than the French rack! (Just my personal taste 😉)

Lamb rib-meat skewers: the skewer closest to lamb chops

Eight pre-seared lamb rib-meat skewers

I asked if there was a skewer menu made from lamb-chop cuts, and they recommended the rib-meat skewers as the closest match, so I ordered them right away. They're much richer and nuttier than the chops! And really tender too. It felt like the perfect thing to pair with the lighter flavor of the lamb chops. You get 8 pieces total, neatly pre-seared.

Hwarodam fried rice and the house soy sauce

A bowl of Hwarodam fried rice

If you come here, definitely try the fried rice too! Seriously so good...

Secret soy sauce served with the fried rice

The secret soy sauce that comes with the fried rice is absolutely insane! It's a spicy soy sauce with a slightly Chinese-style chili kick, and it was so good I ended up using it not just on the fried rice but also as a dip for the lamb 🤤

Fried rice mixed with the soy sauce

The fried rice itself isn't harsh or salty, just nutty, so mixing in a little of that sauce made for a really delicious combo. Totally recommend the French rack plus this fried rice!!!

Final verdict: the Magok lamb chop spot my mom loved

Overall the dining room was pleasant and spotless, and even the equipment like the grills was kept shining clean, which made the whole meal feel great. Most of all, the staff's kindness and thoughtful care stood out 🥺 At places where staff grill your meat right beside you, things can sometimes feel a bit awkward, right? But here the staff stayed cheerful the whole time, warmly shared tips on how to eat everything, and were attentive without being overbearing — it was genuinely touching.

Floss and interdental brushes at the register

On our way out after the meal, there was even floss and interdental brushes at the register... such a thoughtful touch ✨ I really love this kind of care. Seeing my parents satisfied after I took them out is so rewarding! The clean, upscale atmosphere made the meal feel like a special treat where we were being taken care of, and both the service and the food were flawless! 👍👏 I have a feeling I'll definitely be back here within the next two months! If you're looking for a lamb restaurant in Magok with great atmosphere and great taste, I highly recommend Hwarodam Yang Kkochi 🔥
