Gangneung gelato café with two 6,500-won large cups: Hi Gelato

In short

Hi Gelato is a gelato café on Toseong-ro in Gangneung, about 7-8 minutes on foot from Gangneung Central Market. Two large cups at 6,500 won each came as corn supernova with mango-strawberry romance and soft tofu gelato with marble strawberry, plus free tastes of Valrhona dark chocolate and cheer-up matcha. Pairing one sweet flavor with the tangy mango-strawberry scoop was the most satisfying combination at Hi Gelato.

Hi GELATO

Where is Hi Gelato? 7-8 minutes on foot from Gangneung Central Market

Hi Gelato is about a 7-8 minute walk from Gangneung Central Market, so it's a great spot for anyone stopping by the market on a Gangneung trip. Isn't eating soft tofu gelato basically part of the Gangneung course now?! So here's my review of Hi Gelato!

There's a free public parking lot nearby, about a 3-minute walk, so you can park there for free! I've marked the public parking lot on the map. The weather was gorgeous and the storefront photographed beautifully too — white walls with red lettering made it stand out and look even prettier!

Inside Hi Gelato: a Gangneung gelato café with seating

There was more seating inside than I expected, which was nice! Most gelato places I remember are set up mainly for takeout, but Hi Gelato — the Gangneung café famous for its soft tofu gelato — had several tables for eating in.

Every corner had a lovely vibe and was nicely decorated, great for photos! Looks like they run various events too, so if you visit, be sure to check those out!

There was also a detailed description of the signature Hi Gelato menu item. Vanilla gelato, a tasting scoop, blueberry compote — seems like there are combinations unique to Hi Gelato that aren't in the showcase!

The 9 gelato flavors in the Hi Gelato showcase

There were 9 gelato flavors total in the showcase — marble strawberry, corn supernova, soft tofu gelato, mango-strawberry romance, milk choco chip, Lotus biscuit, cheer-up matcha, gourmet butter brown cheese, and Valrhona dark chocolate! So many options that I really struggled to decide what to get!

The flavors at Hi Gelato — the Gangneung café famous for soft tofu gelato — seem to rotate often, so the flavors in this post might not be available depending on when you visit!

Just looking at them, the gelatos seemed so soft and like they'd melt in your mouth! The colors were also natural-looking, which made them seem even more delicious!

Ordering two large cups at Hi Gelato, with plenty of tasting spoons

I ordered two large cups at ₩6,500 each, and the owner at Hi Gelato — the Gangneung café famous for soft tofu gelato — was so friendly! They gave us this many tasting spoons!! The tasting spoons alone were a decent amount of food!

Corn supernova and mango-strawberry romance

The first cup was corn supernova and mango-strawberry romance, plus a taste of Valrhona dark chocolate. First off, the Valrhona dark chocolate was exactly as its name suggests — a rich, deep chocolate flavor that was very appealing! The corn had a deep corn flavor and a pretty color! And I highly recommend the mango-strawberry romance!!! Personally, since you can pick two flavors, I'd suggest always getting mango and strawberry as one, then picking something sweet for the other. That way you can go back and forth between sweet and tangy, which is great!

Soft tofu gelato and marble strawberry

Soft tofu gelato — a must-try if you're in Gangneung — and marble strawberry, and since I was on the fence about whether to try matcha, the owner thoughtfully gave us a taste of matcha! Marble strawberry had strawberry flavor that wasn't overpowering, blending nicely with the base ice cream, and the soft tofu gelato was a strange one! It tastes like soft tofu, but it's ice cream!!! But it's not bad at all! I guess this is why everyone eats soft tofu gelato?!

Cheer-up matcha gelato given as a taste

And the cheer-up matcha was a clean matcha ice cream without an overly strong bitterness. So it was a good style of ice cream even for matcha beginners!
