Songpa seafood restaurant for fall gizzard shad: Yeongjae Susan
In short
Yeongjae Susan is a seafood shop in Songpa, Seoul, offering takeaway platters of gizzard shad, large flounder, and red seabream. I shared the medium Jeongwangchamhoe platter and spicy fish stew with my mom, who loves fall gizzard shad. Verdict: a satisfying way to try several seasonal fish at once.

Yeongjae Susan, where I went craving fall gizzard shad
Now that fall is here, there’s a food I’m starting to crave: gizzard shad! 🐟 My mom said she’d been thinking about gizzard shad now that it’s fall, so we decided to go to Garak Market and try an assorted sashimi platter with it.
Yeongjae Susan

Yeongjae Susan was bustling with people right from the entrance 📌 We came by car, parked on B3 of Garak Mall, and took the escalator up. Yeongjae Susan was immediately on the right as we came up, so it wasn’t hard to find. If you’re driving, enter through Garak Mall’s South Gate 1 parking lot and park near pillar E09 on B3. Customers get a 3-hour free parking voucher, which made it nice to browse without rushing.

Yeongjae Susan is affiliated with Mermaid Priest Pirates, so I somehow felt even more reassured when choosing seafood. Maybe because it was fall, the gizzard shad were gathered in the middle of the tanks 🍂 It really is gizzard shad season in fall.. 🐟
The live squid also caught my eye. They say live squid are expensive, so maybe that’s why they looked even fresher somehow.

There were king crabs above the tanks too, and they were seriously huge!! Seeing them suddenly made me want king crab as well… 😋

The shrimp were flicking about, and the flounder were lying flat along the bottom, so I had fun looking around haha.

📋 What we ordered Medium Jeongwangchamhoe Gizzard shad / large flounder / red seabream + ingredients for spicy fish stew
At last, the sashimi we’d been waiting for came out. Ta-da! 🥁

Even the packaging looked so upscale 💙 When I opened it at home, the fish looked to be in great condition, and my anticipation went up 🔝

Just look at those colors~ 🐟 The sashimi was neatly arranged by type, and I especially loved that there was quite a lot of gizzard shad ❣️

I tried the gizzard shad first and wow… it was really nutty and rich. That distinctive savory flavor came through properly, so personally, five stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

The large flounder was wonderfully chewy too! And the red seabream was chewy as well!! As I ate, I felt that Yeongjae Susan’s sashimi had more of a lightly aged-sashimi feel than the usual just-sliced live fish. It had a pleasantly dense chew that was different from the bouncy texture of live fish. How does a seafood shop get this kind of aged-sashimi-like texture…?

Spicy fish stew simmered with marsh clams
It feels incomplete if spicy fish stew is missing when you eat sashimi, right..! A meal only feels finished once you’ve had the spicy fish stew too—everyone knows what I mean, right? 🤭 Yeongjae Susan even included marsh clams, which are said to be pricey, in the fish-stew ingredients ✨ They also packed bean sprouts and radish, so there was hardly anything else I had to prepare at home.

Once I added the ingredients and let it bubble away, the broth was wonderfully refreshing. Eating it with rice after the sashimi was seriously filling. What’s nice about an assorted sashimi platter is that you can get tired of eating only one kind, but Jeongwangchamhoe lets you try everything from gizzard shad to large flounder and red seabream. I was even happier because my mom, who loves fall gizzard shad, enjoyed it so much 🍴
Yeongjae Susan says live fish arrive several times a day, and because there are so many orders, its seafood turnover is fairly quick. You can eat at the shop, take your seafood home for a comfortable meal, or use a sauce restaurant after buying seafood and eat there.
A 20% discount coupon can be used when ordering through Naver 🚨 Keep that in mind if you’re planning a takeaway or an order!!! If you’re looking for somewhere to eat sashimi at Garak Market, or Garak Market sashimi to take home and enjoy comfortably, I recommend Yeongjae Susan 🖤 Especially when you’re craving fall gizzard shad, I recommend trying an assorted platter that includes it!
