Songpa fish restaurant with 3-hour free parking: Yeongjae Susan

In short

Yeongjae Susan is a fish restaurant on the first floor of Garak Mall in Songpa, Seoul, selling live sashimi and seafood. We took home a small Nunggwangcham sashimi set for 65,000 won on a Sunday afternoon and enjoyed it with white wine; the chilled packing kept it in great shape. Verdict: a convenient choice for fresh sashimi to take home.

Taking home sashimi from Yeongjae Susan at Garak Market

My husband and I love seafood, so whenever we crave sashimi, we tend to wander over to Garak Market for it. It is cheaper than eating at a restaurant, the quality is good and fresh, and we can eat comfortably at home—such a win!

We have visited Garak Market's seafood section several times, but had not found a stall worth becoming regulars at yet. I was full of anticipation about this sashimi place we visited this time~

Seafood being well cared for in clean tanks. King crab, snow crab, blue crab, freshwater eel, anago conger eel, abalone, sea snail, sea cucumber, gizzard shad, wild live fish sashimi, greenling, fat greenling, sea cucumber, octopus, and more—pretty much every popular species was ready to go.

Yeongjae Susan is a popular spot in Garak Market's seafood section with plenty of orders, so live fish are delivered more than three times a day. Their assorted sashimi is especially recommended because the turnover is fast and the quality is good!

Assorted sashimi selections and sizes

Yeongjae Susan has well-organized assorted sashimi options that can be mixed and matched to your taste, with red sea bream, flounder, mullet, halibut, sea bass, horse mackerel, and more. What I liked most was the clearly posted fixed pricing, which makes choosing easy.

You cannot leave out gizzard shad sashimi in autumn, when it is in season. For anyone who would find it a shame to eat only gizzard shad, there are seasonal assorted sashimi sets that include it too, so keep that in mind!

Seasonal assorted sashimi including gizzard shad
  • Mini: 1 person
  • Small: 2 people
  • Medium: 3–4 people
  • Large: 4 or more people

I liked that the sizes are divided so specifically, and it is nice that there is a mini size for a solo drink at home too, haha.

Sunday-afternoon takeaway wait and reservations

✔️ Wait: Since it is so popular, I had seen reviews saying that waits can be quite long on weekends or at peak times. Maybe because I visited around 5 PM on a Sunday, though, they sliced it almost immediately after I ordered. I think I waited about 10 minutes. You can eat there too, but I got takeaway so we could eat more comfortably.

If you are worried about waiting or want it prepared in advance, it seems best to reserve a pickup through Coupang Eats, Baemin, Yogiyo, In-eo Gyoju, or Naver Reservation. Delivery is also available, so having it sent comfortably to your home would be nice too.

Cho-gochujang (sweet-and-tangy chili sauce), ssamjang (savory soybean paste dip), soy sauce with lemon sauce, wasabi, ginger, and pickled shallots. There were so many seasonings to pair with the sashimi that we never got tired of it. Other than radish sprouts, there were no wrap vegetables, so prepare vegetables separately if you need them.

They packed it securely in an insulated shopping bag filled with ice packs, so it stayed in great condition even though we were out for quite a while and stopped elsewhere on the way.

We ordered the small Nunggwangcham sashimi set (₩65,000), made up of large sea bass, large halibut, and large red sea bream. Since every fish was a large species, it was the perfect filling amount for two people.

It was nice to taste a variety of wild live fish sashimi, and it was fresh enough to enjoy without any fishy smell.

You can get maeuntang (spicy fish stew) on request, but we wanted to eat just sashimi cleanly, so we did not bring any home. But then we ended up craving something spicy and made ramen after all... hahaha. You all should try the maeuntang too.

Choosing sashimi and maeuntang

We wondered which alcohol to have with it~ and ended up eating it with white wine we had at home. It has a clean flavor that would go beautifully with anything—soju, beer, whatever your drink of choice.

Each piece was cut this long, so it really filled your mouth! They even packed the prized halibut fin separately, and we got to properly savor its rich, nutty flavor.

It was springy and chewy with a satisfying bite, and sea bass, halibut, and red sea bream each had their own character. We compared the cuts and rotated through soy sauce, cho-gochujang, and wasabi to find what suited each one. We definitely got our protein in, haha.

After all that, my personal favorite is wasabi with soy sauce—or just a little dab of wasabi—because it lets you taste the fish itself best.

There are so many stalls that it is always hard to decide where to go when visiting, so I think Yeongjae Susan is one to consider. I hear the gizzard shad is delicious, so it would be nice to visit before the autumn season ends.
