In short
Gyeryugwan is a Korean pub and restaurant near Sindang Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. I ordered oak wood-fired chicken stuffed with neungi mushrooms and glutinous rice, chicken breast cartilage patties, chicken neck tangsuyuk, and two bottles of Chum Churum; the chicken neck tangsuyuk was the standout. I visited Gyeryugwan (계류관) because I wanted to raise a glass of soju with chicken dishes that were light and subtly infused with an oak aroma.
Located in a Hipdang-dong alley near Sindang Station, this place serves distinctive oak wood-fired chicken and a varied selection of chicken specialty-cut bar snacks.
Even before going in, the sight of whole chickens slowly turning at the entrance and the subtle oak scent building in the air made me even more excited for drinks.
With the atmosphere of a Korean pub, it is a very fitting place to stop by when looking for chicken or a bar in Sindang-dong.
Here is a straightforward record of happily emptying our glasses with the signature oak wood-fired neungi chicken, chicken neck tangsuyuk, and chicken breast cartilage patties.

An entrance stacked with oak firewood
Stacks and stacks of oak firewood greet you right at the exterior entrance. A place that is clearly saying, “We grill with firewood.” On the left is a wooden sign reading Gyeryugwan!

An interior dressed in warm orange tones
The interior is all warm orange tones, almost like stepping into a hwangto room, a traditional clay-walled room. Having everything in the same tone actually felt comfortable, and I liked that the lighting was easy on the eyes.

The restroom is inside the restaurant, with separate facilities for men and women.

Refreshing complimentary side dishes
These are Gyeryugwan’s complimentary side dishes. I do not usually care much for yeolmu kimchi (young radish kimchi), but this was so refreshing and tasty. The seasoned flying-fish roe? That was delicious too!

Wood-fired chicken with lovely neungi aroma and glutinous rice
This is Gyeryugwan’s oak wood-fired neungi chicken. Roasted over an oak fire for a long time, it had all the fat rendered out, a crisp skin, and incredibly moist meat.
The chicken was packed with neungi mushrooms and glutinous rice. The gently spreading mushroom fragrance and nutty flavor of the rice were seriously, seriously wonderful. The rice and skin were the best.

Tender chicken breast cartilage patties
These are Gyeryugwan’s chicken breast cartilage patties. Thickly kneaded minced chicken is dipped in egg and pan-fried until golden.
They were full of juices inside and melted softly in the mouth. The clean yet savory seasoning was absorbed beautifully, making them wonderfully balanced as an easy snack with drinks. Honestly, like an upgraded, super-tender tteokgalbi (Korean grilled meat patty)?

The chicken neck tangsuyuk was the best
This is Gyeryugwan’s chicken neck tangsuyuk, crispy sweet-and-sour fried chicken. The specialty cut is fried thin and crisp, while still keeping its pleasantly chewy bite.
The sweet-and-sour sauce was not overly sweet, so it did not overwhelm the chicken neck’s naturally nutty flavor. Every piece was nicely small too, making it so easy to eat in one bite. Personally, this one was the most delicious!
