Honestly, I knew Hyeonseonine through their meal kit before I ever knew the restaurant. I cooked it at home and it was way better than I expected, so I told myself I'd go try the real thing at the main branch someday! Then while looking for something quick to eat before Yongamek, I finally made it there. This is Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch — the name that always comes up when people talk about Yongsan tteokbokki (spicy rice cake).

It's about a 4-minute walk from Sinyongsan Station Exit 5. It's tucked a little into an alley off the main road, but there's a chimney on the roof so you can spot it easily once you're close. It's even walkable to Yongamek, so it worked great as a pre-movie meal. There's no parking, so I'd recommend public transit.

The first thing that caught my eye when I arrived was the chimney on the roof. A chimney on a tteokbokki shop felt a bit unexpected, but seeing it in person, it was cute and charming.

It's popular enough among Yongsan tteokbokki spots to take waitlist entries via Catch Table, so it's worth checking the wait status before you head over.

Why Hyeonseonine works for a meal before a Yongsan IMAX movie

If you're coming for a date at Yongsan I'Park Mall like we were, or trying to figure out something quick to eat before watching a movie at the Odyssey Yongamek, I think this is probably the best choice haha.

You order at the kiosk, then help yourself to whatever you need from the self-serve bar.

What stuck with me most that day was how kind the staff were. Even with customers streaming in nonstop, every single interaction was really friendly, which put me in a good mood from the start of the meal!

And it's pretty spacious for a bunsik (Korean street food) place, so you can enjoy your meal comfortably without feeling cramped.

That's the lineup! Most à la carte items are in the ₩4,000–6,000 range, which is pretty easy on the wallet even among Yongsan tteokbokki spots.

Soy sauce, salt, fried batter crumbs, pickled radish, all of it‼️ The self-serve bar is really well stocked, so it was fun being able to refill whenever I wanted~

Eating the 26,000-won Hyeonseoni Combo Set at medium spice

The instant tteokbokki is famous too, but I ordered the Hyeonseoni Combo Set so I could taste a little bit of everything.

I picked medium spice for the tteokbokki, and it was actually milder than Shin Ramyun (a spicy instant noodle brand). It comes in sweet at first with a slight kick of spice lingering at the end.

There was plenty of broth, which also made it great for dipping the other side dishes~!

Free unlimited fritter crumbs at the self-serve bar

This place lets you refill fritter crumbs for free at the self-serve bar. They're crispy right when you sprinkle them on, then get softer once they soak up the broth, and the savory flavor really jumps out. We went back for more several times.

Handmade sundae and fish cake soup with a water rice cake

The sundae (Korean blood sausage) comes with liver and organs mixed in, and there was no gamey smell at all. Dipping it in the tteokbokki sauce is the move!

The hidden point of the fish cake is that there's water rice cake tucked inside, so when you take a bite, a soft, chewy rice cake shows up and the texture changes twice.

Assorted fritters and mini gimbap in the combo

The fritters and mini gimbap (seaweed rice roll) were perfect dipped in the tteokbokki broth too. The fritters were crispy without any greasiness, maybe because they use clean oil — really delicious.

Honestly I thought the gimbap wouldn't be anything special since it's just mini gimbap, but it was genuinely delicious! Small, but packed with filling, so you could really taste the ingredients.

Two adults, one male and one female, shared this and we ended up genuinely stuffed from this one set. Next time I want to come back and try the instant tteokbokki haha.

Hyeonseonine meal kit vs. the Yongsan main branch: what differed

I went in with expectations after trying the meal kit first, and eating it in person was definitely more satisfying. The friendly service, unlimited fritter crumb refills, and odorless sundae — I could see why it's considered a top Yongsan tteokbokki spot. The only downsides are that there's no parking, and given how popular it is, you might run into a wait depending on the time. I'd recommend it to anyone wanting a light meal before Yongamek, or anyone who wants to try a variety of bunsik at once. I'm planning to go back to try the instant tteokbokki next time.
