Dongtan Korean BBQ weekday dinner with kimchi stew: Jipbul Taebaek

In short

Jipbul Taebaek Dongtan Flagship Branch is a beef rib (udae galbi) barbecue restaurant in Yeongcheon-dong, Dongtan, Hwaseong. The writer walked straight in with no wait at 6pm on a weekday and ordered two servings of udae galbi (thick-cut bone-in short ribs) at 32,000 won each plus taebaek kimchi stew at 7,000 won, with staff grilling and cutting everything alongside mushrooms, bracken and kimchi. Sauces such as black sesame salt and neungi mushroom sauce kept the beef from feeling heavy to the last bite, making Jipbul Taebaek an easy weekday dinner pick in Dongtan.

What is the dining room like inside?

We got this table and I loved it, hehe — there's a cute panda doll next to it and the big window was open, giving it a bit of an outdoor tent-restaurant feel. Perfect for the cool autumn weather we're having right now, a great Dongtan restaurant to visit these days!

Ordering two servings of udae galbi and taebaek kimchi stew

Our order: udae galbi at ₩32,000 × 2 servings, and taebaek kimchi stew at ₩7,000. Raw udae galbi is literally raw meat, but what we ordered was marinated a bit in sauce! Supposedly the flower cut (kkotgalbisal), the tastiest cut of beef ribs — I ordered it with high expectations, mouth already watering 🤤

Spread of side dishes including mashed potato and japchae

Side dishes and the sauce lineup

Bracken and kimchi are meant for grilling, and the side dishes include mashed potato with honey mustard, lettuce and perilla leaf salad, japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), radish salad, green onion kimchi, and pickles. There's also a sweet soy sauce and black sesame salt. The black sesame salt was great — even dipping generously, it wasn't too salty!

Four dipping sauces: ssamjang, angelica root, truffle mushroom, and wasabi

There were several dipping sauces too, which felt very thoughtfully done: ssamjang (soybean paste), angelica root, truffle mushroom, and wasabi. The angelica had a bit of a celery-like taste — kind of a 'this is good for you' flavor haha. The truffle mushroom sauce had a really strong mushroom aroma! I sometimes get tired of a dish partway through eating, so I loved having this many sauce options 👍

Large udae galbi on the grill

How does the staff-grilled udae galbi taste?

The huge ribs arrived. Staff grilled them together with mushrooms, bracken, and kimchi! Having everything grilled for us made it so easy.

Staff member cutting udae galbi into pieces

I've been feeling run down lately and craving meat, so I came for this — time to eat some big ribs and get my energy back lol. They cut everything into pieces for us like this! Thick, chunky udae galbi with a satisfying chew.

A piece of udae galbi dipped in black sesame salt

First bite plain, just to taste the meat itself; second bite dipped in black sesame salt like this. Big, juicy, with fat you can really sink your teeth into — this udae galbi ✨️ First time trying it, and it felt like a bigger version of the beef rib meat I already knew. That kind of feeling.

Free beef tartare cake for birthday guests

While we were eating, a birthday song suddenly rang out through the whole restaurant — happy birthday to you~~!! — and I saw staff bring out a yukhoe (raw beef tartare) cake as a free birthday treat lol. The birthday guest looked a little embarrassed, but it seemed like a fun experience haha. If it's your birthday, keep this event in mind!

Taebaek kimchi stew served with a bowl of rice

Taebaek kimchi stew as the side order

The kimchi stew wasn't served in a tiny hot pot but a proper-sized one, and it came with a bowl of rice, so mixing rice into it was pure honey-flavored bliss~~ There was a decent amount of pork in it too, so I'd recommend it as a generous side dish.

Final bits of fascia and lean meat pulled off the udae galbi

When we asked them to turn off the burner, they finished by pulling off the last bits of chewy fascia and lean meat still clinging to the udae galbi for us. Grease refill complete 🍖 The friendly owner smiled and said, come again next time~^^, and it made me happy too. I want to borrow some of that energy~~ Thanks for the meal, Jipbul Taebaek Dongtan Flagship Branch!
