In short

How to get to Moyeon Mapo: 3 minutes from Mapo Station Exit 1

My go-to-again-and-again spot after 18 years working in Gongdeok! A Mapo beef restaurant that's kind and delicious every single time I go — Moyeon Mapo. The place is covered in Blue Ribbon and Red Ribbon awards, and it feels like there are only more to come, haha.

It's a 3-minute walk from Exit 1 of Mapo Station, and there's valet parking (₩3,000) behind the building. Since this Mapo beef restaurant is so popular, it's best to book ahead before visiting.

Lunch reservations on Catch Table seemed to be full, so I went without a booking and — oh boy — there was a wait, about 15 minutes. I waited last time too, which really drives home just how popular this place is.

Every seat a private room: why Moyeon Mapo suits group meals in Mapo

Moyeon Mapo has no open hall — it's entirely made up of private rooms. You can enjoy your meal privately, making it a classy Mapo room restaurant for all kinds of gatherings. Rooms come in different sizes depending on party size, and there are coat hooks on the wall for jackets and bags.

Moyeon Mapo lunch menu and prices: 25,000 won grilled beef, 48,000 won sirloin

The lunch menu has two rice pot sets — charcoal-grilled seasoned beef (₩25,000) and lunch sirloin (₩48,000). Just like last time, we ordered one of each. The buckwheat tea was cool and nutty :)

The sirloin and the charcoal-grilled seasoned beef arrived together. Look at that hanwoo (Korean beef)! Marbling like art. My mouth was watering even before it hit the grill.

Wrap vegetables and side dishes as neat as a Korean set-meal house

Side dishes for the rice, wrap vegetables to eat with the meat, sauces — all came out neatly arranged, like a traditional Korean set meal restaurant. It looked delicious and honestly tasted even better.

Cabbage wrap with barley doenjang (soybean paste) on top — even I, who isn't a big vegetable person, was completely won over. How can something this mild taste this good?! The seasoned fish roe was totally my type too.

Staff grill the hanwoo from start to finish

At Moyeon Mapo, the staff grill and cut the meat completely from start to finish, so all you have to do is focus on eating.

I was hungry so I started on the rice pot first, and by the time I looked up, they'd already finished grilling the meat, haha. Great heat control too — since it's hanwoo, they grilled it quickly and left.

Moyeon Mapo's pot rice stirred with braised abalone and butter

A lunch rice pot dish that holds its own even against restaurants where rice pots are the whole point.

Scoop the rice into a bowl, add the braised abalone and butter, give it a good shake — heavenly. The combination of buttery richness and salty-sweet abalone?! You could eat a whole bowl of this rice alone, no meat needed. The abalone is chewy and savory, so good!!! It's a generous size too, nothing to envy from a dedicated abalone rice pot restaurant!

Wrapped in seaweed for a big bite! Now let's really dig into the meat.

What the hanwoo sirloin tastes like

Melt-in-your-mouth hanwoo sirloin. Delicious with just a dab of salt, delicious wrapped in vegetables too. When the meat itself is this good, everything works.

The quality is so good my chopsticks kept going back for more.

A bite of meat placed over scorched rice crust

Having already cleared the rice pot, I tried some meat gently laid over the scorched rice crust at the bottom. Any combination with that is bound to be good. It's so generous that even our big-eating couple was stuffed, and we cleared out every last side dish too, haha.

Even on a repeat visit, it never disappoints — the food and service are always top-notch, which makes it consistently satisfying. My husband even said he wants to hold his alumni reunion here, haha. I'll be back whenever I'm craving hanwoo!
