Where is Myeongyeok Bundang Sunae, and is there parking?

Myeongyeok Bundang Sunae is a kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) and naengmyeon restaurant about a 7-minute walk from Exit 1 of Sunae Station. They also support up to 2 hours of parking, so it's convenient whether you come by transit or by car.

I found such a great spot for a family meal! Kalguksu with the parents, naengmyeon and dongkatsu (pork/chicken cutlet) with the kids. A place you can visit year-round — this is Myeongyeok, the kalguksu spot right by Exit 1 of Sunae Station in Bundang.

You can see the menu from outside, and the prices are really reasonable. Especially with the weather turning toward autumn these days, chicken kalguksu is so welcome~

Visiting at 11am on a weekend: how long is the wait?

We visited around 11am on a weekend, so luckily there was no wait, but the place was already nearly full. During lunch hours you're pretty much guaranteed a wait, ha.

Restaurant entrance packed with weekend morning customers

Inside Myeongyeok Bundang Sunae and what's on the self-serve bar

The inside of Myeongyeok wasn't as big as I expected, but with such fast turnover and so many customers, there are quite a lot of tables.

There's a self-serve banchan (side dish) zone at the front of the restaurant. Along with danmuji (pickled radish), pickled radish, and kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi), you can also help yourself to unlimited broth and rice. There are bowls up top and aprons beside them, so anyone who needs one can use them freely.

Menu signage inside the restaurant

As I mentioned, this Sunae Station kalguksu spot really has three signature menus: 1) kalguksu, 2) naengmyeon, 3) chicken cutlet. We couldn't skip any of them, so we ordered one of each.

  • Meat-loaded perilla oil naengmyeon — ₩13,900
  • Half-chicken kalguksu — ₩11,900
  • Mixed chicken cutlet (Western-style) — ₩10,900

Overall the prices felt very fair. And the portions were genuinely huge, too.

They also serve fresh geotjeori kimchi (lightly seasoned cabbage kimchi) on the side, and it's the perfect match for the kalguksu bb. A kalguksu spot is only as good as its kimchi!! Myeongyeok is a certified king when it comes to Sunae Station kalguksu.

Mixed chicken cutlet, 10,900 won: tenderloin and breast

Myeongyeok's mixed chicken cutlet lets you try both tenderloin and breast for ₩10,900. And it was even tastier than I expected.

I figured the tenderloin might be dry, but honestly... you could tell just from how easily the knife glided through it. I'm still thinking about how tender it was...

Since it's chicken breast and tenderloin rather than pork, it's light and not greasy at all, which I loved. And the Western-style (gyeongyangsik) sauce tastes exactly like the nostalgic classic!

Half-chicken kalguksu, 11,900 won: why it's the signature dish

Myeongyeok's half-chicken kalguksu costs ₩11,900, and they really do put half a chicken in it. I instantly understood why it's the signature menu. The chunks of meat were huge, wow.

If I'd known about this place sooner, I would've come during the boknal days (the hottest days of summer, traditionally for eating chicken soup).

The chicken broth itself has great savoriness and umami, but they also use pepper really well. That little kick of pepper, with a spicy tingle at the end, is addictive.

As I said, top it with kimchi and you'll finish the whole bowl. The broth is so addictive I wanted to mix rice into it, but... next thing I knew, I'd drunk the broth too...

Meat-loaded perilla oil naengmyeon, 13,900 won

Myeongyeok's meat-loaded perilla oil naengmyeon is ₩13,900, and the meat portion truly lived up to the name. The owner clearly takes ingredients seriously... a portion that earns the 'meat bomb' title... honestly there was still meat left even after I finished all the perilla noodles...

The nutty flavor of the perilla oil is a perfect fit, and the crunchy texture of the gungchae namul (aster greens) stood out. A flavor pretty much anyone could enjoy without exception :)

Is Myeongyeok Bundang Sunae good for solo diners and family meals?

At Myeongyeok Bundang Sunae, plenty of people dine solo, but there are definitely a lot of families too. If it were near my house, I feel like I'd come eat here all the time. When the weather turns chilly and you're craving hot kalguksu to warm you up, give this Sunae Station kalguksu spot a try!
