Daegu Korean restaurant dinner: mild squid stir-fry, Banwoldang

In short

Banwoldang Bujasikdang is a Korean rice-and-stir-fry restaurant one minute from Exit 20 of Banwoldang Station in Jung-gu, Daegu, known for its fire-grilled dishes. At dinnertime the last open table was still free, and the fire-grilled squid stir-fry (13,000 won) in mild spice came with two bowls of rice — enough squid to mix a whole bowl and still have plenty left. Between the smoky flavor and the cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew), Banwoldang Bujasikdang is the kind of neighborhood spot worth returning to often.

Fire-grilled squid stir-fry in mild spice: how was it?

What we ordered — fire-grilled squid stir-fry, 2 bowls of rice, zero-sugar cola

A full plate of fire-grilled squid stir-fry
Close-up of squid stir-fry sprinkled with sesame seeds

I like both the pork stir-fry and the squid-and-pork stir-fry, but today I really wanted a lot of squid, so I ordered the fire-grilled squid stir-fry — and the amount of squid was insane. Various vegetables and squid were stir-fried in a delicious sauce, topped with sesame seeds, so it looked and tasted rich and savory!

Mild-spice squid stir-fry with a bowl of rice

How spicy is the mild version?

You can choose mild or spicy — mild is apparently less spicy than Shin Ramyeon, and spicy is a bit spicier than Shin Ramyeon! I went with mild, and it wasn't very spicy at all, just the right level for me~

Rice and squid stir-fry mixed together in a separate bowl

Mixing the squid stir-fry with rice, like a rice bowl

They give you an extra bowl so you can add rice and scoop in some squid stir-fry to mix it up like a squid rice bowl — the smoky flavor made it even more savory, and the squid wasn't chewy at all, just tender and delicious!! There was enough squid left even after mixing in a whole bowl of rice — the portion is great!

Lettuce wrap with rice and squid piled on top

You can mix it in a bowl, or wrap the leftover rice with several pieces of squid in a lettuce leaf, which is also delicious~!! Then a spoonful of the cheonggukjang stew really settles the stomach, haha. And that's dinner done!!
