Suwon Station is a place I stop by every time I'm in Gyeonggi-do, and this time, while wandering around the Rodeo Street area, I suddenly got hungry haha!! While looking for somewhere to eat, I found Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch — the exterior already smelled like a hidden gem, and they serve barley rice as a default side along with kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) and bossam (boiled pork) :)

Where is Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch, and what are its hours?
Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch is on the 1st floor of 48 Hyanggyo-ro, Paldal-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do, and it's open 10:30 – 22:00. Break time runs 15:30 – 17:00, and it's listed as closed Sep 24–25, 2026.

We got to Daseon Kalguksu around 5pm, right after break time ended?? I was a little worried and thought maybe we should wait a bit before going in, but there were already people eating inside, so we just walked in without waiting, hehe. Turnover seems fast, so it should be fine even during peak times like Suwon lunch hour!

What's on the menu: kalguksu, kal-nakji and suyuk
Here's the menu at Daseon Kalguksu, a Suwon favorite. They serve not just kalguksu but also kal-nakji (spicy octopus noodle soup) and bossam, so just picking what to order took over 5 minutes ㅠ.ㅠ (why is everything so delicious 😂😂)

Every table has pickled hot peppers, vinegar-chili sauce, and pepper. There are also small plates and paper cups, so feel free to use them right away if you need them :)

Free barley rice, kimchi and fresh vegetable salad with every order
Right after we ordered, they brought out this barley rice. These days a lot of kalguksu places don't give you barley rice, so Daseon Kalguksu giving it as a default side is amazing 😍 Mix it in with a good squeeze of vinegar-chili sauce and it's absolutely delicious (honestly I'd come back just for the barley rice.)

Kalguksu and kimchi go together so naturally it's basically automatic. Both the kimchi and the fresh vegetable salad were spicy-sweet and amazing at Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch (you can add extra into your barley rice too 😋)

Prices: kalguksu for two 20,000 won, suyuk plate 15,000 won
Here's what we ordered.
- Kalguksu for two - ₩20,000
- Bossam plate - ₩15,000

Why the original kalguksu arrives in separate single-serving bowls
This is the original kalguksu. I thought ordering two portions would mean one big shared bowl, but they gave us separate bowls each, which actually turned out to be nice. Getting them separately makes it more comfortable to eat with coworkers or friends, so it's even better :)
It's loaded with clams, chives, and gim (seaweed) flakes. Even though it's a single portion, the amount was huge. Since they cook it fresh the moment you order, the noodles stay bouncy and super chewy (●'◡'●)

With so many clams in it, the broth was clean, refreshing, and light. You know what that taste is like, right...? haha

If the broth feels a bit plain, try adding some pickled hot peppers. A little spicy kick comes through and gives it a whole different flavor!

Suyuk plate eaten three ways with chives and salted shrimp sauce
The bossam plate also comes out massive. The color of the well-boiled pork looked so good, and the sesame seeds sprinkled on top made the visual perfect too.

Wrapped with the chives underneath the pork and the salted shrimp served alongside, it's the perfect bossam trio (*/ω\*) The pork was cooked so well there was no gamey smell at all — soft, moist, and just plain delicious :)

Is Daseon Kalguksu worth a meal near Suwon Station?
No matter what, kalguksu needs kimchi~ 📸 I found Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch while looking for good food in Suwon, and had a really satisfying meal. From the complimentary barley rice to the kalguksu and bossam, the combination was excellent. The kalguksu was bouncy and chewy, and the bossam was soft and moist — eating them together was the best. It would make a great Suwon lunch, and it's tasty enough to earn its reputation as a Suwon favorite.
