Gyodong, Daegu kalguksu spot with spicy chicken salad: Donggok Jemyeon

In short

Donggok Jemyeon Daegu Dongseong-ro Main Branch is a house-made noodle kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant on the first floor of the same building line as Daegu City Center in Gyodong, Jung-gu, Daegu. Two adults and one child arrived right at the 11:30 opening and ate Korean beef bone kalguksu, super-concentrated samgye (chicken) kalguksu, a half plate of gabrisal pork suyuk (boiled pork slices) and dakmuchim (spicy shredded chicken salad) for 44,000 won, with extra bowls of rice free. Of everything on the table at Donggok Jemyeon, the standout was the 9,500 won dakmuchim.

After browsing around Dongseong-ro last week, I went to find the Gyodong, Daegu restaurant I'd already picked out for lunch.

Because it's homemade noodles, the noodles themselves were special, and the broth was especially amazing... 2 adults, 1 kid, ordered generously including sides 🍽️ ₩44,000 and I felt like I spent it wisely.

Where is Donggok Jemyeon, and where do you park?

Donggok Jemyeon is on the 1st floor of the building at 629 Gukchaebosang-ro, Jung-gu, Daegu, same line as Daegu City Center. It's about a 4-minute walk from 2.28 Memorial Park and 7 minutes on foot from Jungangno Station Exit 3.

Let's take a look at the exterior of Donggok Jemyeon~

1st-floor exterior of Donggok Jemyeon in Gyodong, Daegu

It has a clean, tidy exterior. 🚗Parking? No dedicated lot ❌ but if you use Dongseongno Parking Lot (Munhwa-dong 12-22), the store subsidizes ₩1,500 per 30 minutes ✅

Wood-toned dining room: is Donggok Jemyeon okay with a child?

The interior of Donggok Jemyeon is done in a luxurious wood-tone style. It's clean enough that it's really fine to bring kids, and I loved the overall tidy feel.

Fancy wood interior~ such a nice emotional atmosphere!

We came right at the 11:30 opening run and there were already lots of office workers — already feels like a real hidden gem...!

Homemade-noodle aging chamber tucked in the store

There's an aging chamber tucked in one corner of the store — it's a homemade-noodle Gyodong, Daegu restaurant that pulls its own noodles and ages them before use, and I was surprised they even label the date! I can't even imagine how chewy the noodles must be~

Side dishes and free extra rice at Donggok Jemyeon

Practical, no-frills basic side dishes!

Cucumber-pepper doenjang salad and a jar of kimchi as basic side dishes

They brought out cucumber and pepper doenjang muchim (soybean paste salad) plus a jar with kimchi in it.

Kimchi scooped onto a plate

You scoop out as much kimchi as you want onto a prepared plate — spicy and refreshing, goes perfectly with the kalguksu and gabrisal bossam.

A happy dilemma of what to eat first

Table set with kalguksu and side dishes

Just looking at it, this doesn't look ordinary — is this really the portion for ₩9,500 chicken salad? First time I've seen a place with such generous side dishes...

Free extra rice added to the meal

Extra rice: ₩0 (free). Since we had a kid with us, we naturally added extra rice to eat with the pork, and it's provided free — that's the generosity of this Gyodong, Daegu restaurant. It's also great mixed into the leftover kalguksu broth~!

Korean beef bone kalguksu: broth and noodles

The Korean beef bone kalguksu in front of us looked even more appetizing with the green onion and beef toppings, and they added salt and pepper to taste.

The first sip of broth — not greasy, deeply savory ✅ adding a little extra salt was the master stroke. If Jeju has gogi-guksu (meat noodle soup), I want to say Gyodong, Daegu has Korean beef bone kalguksu.

Homemade kalguksu noodles lifted up with chopsticks

I scooped out a little for the kid to eat. You can already feel the elasticity of the noodles!

As expected of homemade noodles, can you see how chewy they look even at a glance? I lifted some up with chopsticks and it made me want to slap my knee, haha, nailed it!

Super-concentrated samgye kalguksu with half a chicken inside

A bowl of Donggok Jemyeon's super-concentrated samgye kalguksu

This is what my husband ordered. If you like samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup), go for the super-concentrated version without hesitation.

Rich samgye broth and chicken meat

Surprised there was half a chicken in there, +such great value. Just thinking about eating the noodles plus all that chicken already fills me up, haha. Rich, deep broth, tastes like you're at a dedicated samgyetang restaurant! 💡Especially a flavor you should eat in summer.

Gabrisal pork suyuk, half plate for 10,000 won

Juicy gabrisal pork suyuk, half plate

A half plate of gabrisal pork suyuk served at the table

A full plate felt like too much for a kid, so we ordered the ₩10,000 half plate — you could call it the (practical) gabrisal pork suyuk half plate!

A tender piece of gabrisal pork suyuk
A piece of gabrisal pork suyuk placed on rice

Isn't the meat alone packed with nutrition? Haha. They put a piece of meat on the extra rice for us, and my son went to town on it... juicy and tender, my 7-year-old ate so well.

The standout: 9,500 won dakmuchim spicy chicken salad

Donggok Jemyeon's standout today is you!

Chicken salad topped with cheongyang chili

(We ordered this chicken salad after seeing it on the table next to us) Surprised by the generous portion, and I was a little worried the cheongyang chili topping might be spicy 💬

Chicken salad seasoning mixed with onion and chives
Picking up a bite of chicken salad

It was topped with plenty of red chili and looked spicy, but it wasn't spicy at all even eaten on an empty morning stomach — passed the test. The special seasoning sauce is amazing...👍 Even on its own with the onion, chives and everything, it's delicious. It also went really well with the gabrisal suyuk.

A plate combining chicken salad and pork suyuk

Sob... the other menu items were delicious too, but if you asked me to pick one dish at Donggok Jemyeon today, it would be the chicken salad. Even if just two of you go, make sure to order it.

A yakult drink served after the meal

After eating well, we each got a yakult too — the thoughtfulness, taste, and specialness of this Gyodong, Daegu restaurant were all perfect...! Donggok Jemyeon... I'm going back!
