Hwangnidang-gil egg tart takeout in a cooler bag, Gyeongju: Tareudang

In short

Tareudang is a takeout tart and fruit mochi shop on Sajeong-ro in the Hwangnidang-gil area of Gyeongju. On a September 2026 visit, the strawberry and cheonhyehyang (a Jeju citrus) items carried a "sold out, see you in winter" notice, so the order became egg tarts, handed over in an orange box with a Tareudang insulated cooler bag and eaten back at the accommodation. Because Tareudang rotates its fruit menu by season, check before you go if there is a flavor you have your heart set on.

Walking Hwangnidang-gil while traveling in Gyeongju, why is there always something else I want to eat? haha I'd just finished a full meal and still my feet stopped the second I spotted a dessert shop. This time it was Gyeongju Tareudang.

The first thing that caught my eye was mochi that looked like it had whole fruit stuffed inside! Even in photos the fruit looked so big that it was hard to just walk past.

How long is the wait at Tareudang in Hwangnidang-gil?

Tareudang is easy to spot even from far down the alley in Hwangnidang-gil, thanks to the crowd gathered outside. I saw people clustered in front and wondered what was going on — turned out it was the Tareudang I'd been looking for haha. Hard to just walk past a scene like that.

When I visited, people were ordering right out front like this too. It's more of a takeout spot than a sit-down café, so even with a line, it kept moving.

Strawberry and cheonhyehyang sold out: what Tareudang had in September

Tareudang's seasonal fruit menu changes depending on the time of year. And getting a closer look, some slightly sad news... strawberry and cheonhyehyang (a citrus fruit) had signs saying "sold out, see you in winter." Seems the fruits available change by season, so keep that in mind.

Still, looking at the display out front, there were way more options than I expected. Persimmon yogurt, raw chocolate, peach yogurt, pineapple, even gold kiwi! That's when I seriously started agonizing over what to pick haha.

The mochi lineup wasn't just the usual strawberry mochi I'm used to seeing. There were combinations that made me curious just reading them, like persimmon yogurt or fig yogurt, so next time I'd like to focus on the mochi.

Inside the small orange shop and the Tareudang GIFT SET

The small orange-decorated shop fits the Hwangnidang-gil vibe surprisingly well. It's not a big flashy café, and maybe that's exactly why you catch yourself glancing at it as you walk by.

There was also a GIFT SET option for packing several pieces together like a present. Good for picking one out on your way back to your accommodation while traveling in Gyeongju, or for sharing with a group.

Honestly, this is where my eyes locked in haha. EGG TART! If you love egg tarts, there's no walking past this photo.

The shop is laid out to make takeout easy. You can see the ordering counter right away, and with the orange frames, tiles and lighting, it's cute enough that waiting around is fun in itself.

And on a day like when I visited, when it gets busy, there's even a separate sign for the waiting line. If you're searching for Hwangnidang-gil dessert spots and plan to go on a weekend or during a busy time, it's worth expecting a bit of a wait.

The red-and-white striped awning up top nails the Tareudang look. Tucked among the alleys lined with Gyeongju's traditional hanok houses, a shop this playful wasn't hard to find at all.

What is on the Tareudang menu board?

The Tareudang menu board has quite a lot of options, from egg tarts to cheesecake tarts to fruit mochi. I took a photo of it too, so anyone planning to visit can check it out. Note this is as of my September 2026 visit — menu and prices may differ depending on when you go.

Looking at the photos again makes me want more haha. From raw-kiwi cream mochi to mango cheesecake tart, it felt like too good a lineup to pick just one.

Egg tart packing and how it tasted

Tareudang's egg tart came in an orange box, which made it easy to carry around while traveling. After ordering, the packing was finally done! When traveling, even a tasty dessert loses its appeal if it's a pain to carry, but this box was packed so neatly it was easy to hold onto.

The orange box is pretty cute too, right? It really gives off that "dessert bought in Gyeongju" feeling, and laying it out back at my accommodation gave me an odd little gift-received feeling.

And finally, the egg tart itself! On the first bite, you could feel the pastry's layers on the outside, and inside was a generous amount of soft filling. Even in the photo, the cross-section looks packed full, right?

And the packaging didn't stop there. They put it once more into an insulated bag with the Tareudang logo, which made it much easier to carry around while traveling.

The inside was sized so the box slid right in. Especially on a hot day, carrying dessert around can be a bit of a worry, so packaging like this was reassuring.

Who should visit Tareudang in Gyeongju?

Weirdly, whenever I travel in Gyeongju, I end up with more dessert photos than meal photos haha. This time too, wandering Hwangnidang-gil led me to Gyeongju Tareudang, and with so many options it was fun just choosing.

Especially like when I visited, some seasonal fruit menu items can sell out, so if there's something specific you want, it's a good idea to check availability before you go. If you searched for Hwangnidang-gil dessert spots thinking only of fruit mochi, take a look at the egg tart or cheesecake tart too. Trying the egg tart made me curious about the rest of the menu, honestly haha.
