Jeju Korean restaurant black pork combo: Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap

Whenever I come to Jeju, I somehow crave at least one proper meal of hot rice topped with a good piece of fish—especially if I started the day with bread or brunch! On this Jeju trip, we found Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap, right in front of Hamdeok Sea.

We visited while looking for a good restaurant near Hamdeok Beach, and it was great for a family visit because we could enjoy a generous spread ranging from mackerel ssambap (mackerel wrap rice) to black pork duruchigi (spicy stir-fried pork).

More than anything, the sea stretches right in front of the restaurant, so it felt as though our Jeju trip continued even after we walked out the door 🌳

Why we ordered mackerel ssambap and black pork duruchigi together

In Jeju, it has to be fish with a spoonful of rice!

We came as a family and ordered mackerel ssambap for 2 + black pork duruchigi for 2! We worried the kids might not eat well if we ordered only fish, but it also felt a little disappointing to come all the way to Jeju and eat only meat. So we ordered both, and honestly, it was such a good combination ❤️ Mackerel on one side, black pork duruchigi on the other.

Once all the side dishes and wrap vegetables were set down in between, it made for a seriously satisfying Jeju table just to look at!

First up was the mackerel ssambap I had been looking forward to. The seasoning had soaked right into the mackerel, so when I pulled off a big piece and placed it over rice, it was savory and full of umami!

The rich oiliness unique to mackerel was there, but without an overpowering fishy taste, so it paired beautifully with rice. And if you add a little more seasoning to the softly cooked mackerel and wrap it in leafy vegetables, it tastes completely different 😊 The mild rice, nutty mackerel, salty seasoning, and fresh vegetables all come together at once—then I understood exactly why it is called mackerel “ssambap” 👍

And the black pork duruchigi was something I was so glad we ordered alongside it. If the mackerel ssambap is a salty, comforting rice-stealer, the duruchigi draws your appetite in with a slightly more spicy-sweet flavor ⭐

The seasoning clung nicely to the black pork, but rather than hitting too hot or aggressively, the pork’s nutty flavor and the seasoning came through together! The black pork was not tough either; it had a lovely chewy texture, becoming more savory the more we chewed 👍

Especially after a bite of mackerel, putting the duruchigi over rice changed the mood completely. If you are visiting in a group, I would recommend ordering half mackerel ssambap + half black pork duruchigi like we did ☺️ Fish lovers and meat lovers can come together without any fighting : )

What I loved about Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap was not only the delicious meal! Jeju Sea opens up directly in front of the restaurant, making it lovely to walk and catch the sea breeze before or after eating. I really love itineraries like this in Jeju 🩷

Instead of driving somewhere to eat, then getting back in the car to drive to the next place, everything flows together: parking → meal → seaside walk. Especially when traveling with children, it is so much better to let them walk outside for a bit rather than putting them straight back in the car after a meal, right? : ) Step out full and slowly walk toward the sea, and Jeju’s breeze greets you so pleasantly again! The kids can take a look at the sea, while we get a little walk in to digest. So if you are looking for a restaurant near Hamdeok Beach, think beyond just the food and consider the route before and after your meal too 🤍
