My mom came to visit Jeju for the first time in a while. We had dinner in Jeju City and stopped by nearby Suragan Tteokbang (수라간떡방), famous for omegi-tteok, to buy rice cakes as a gift. I picked up a 20-piece box of Jeju omegi-tteok, which is perfect for gifting — let me start my honest review of Suragan Tteokbang right away haha 😆

What the Suragan Tteokbang storefront looks like
Suragan Tteokbang sits on the main road through Nohyeong-dong, close to the airport — such a convenient stop before or after a trip! The sign lists the types of rice cakes they carry. Besides omegi-tteok, they make rice cake cakes, dol-tteok (first birthday rice cakes), thank-you rice cakes, banquet rice cakes, wedding gift rice cakes, and opening-celebration rice cakes, and it says nationwide delivery is available ‼️ There's parking space right in front of the store, so it was easy to pull in briefly and grab a quick pickup haha.
Inside Suragan Tteokbang: the rice cake display
The back of the store looked like the rice cake-making area. There were automated machines and freezer equipment, and overall it felt very hygienic 👍🏻
On the display case near the entrance were rice cakes freshly made that morning. Injeolmi (bean-powder-coated rice cake), kkul-tteok (honey rice cake), baram-tteok, songpyeon, bean-powder-coated chapssaltteok, and more... there were various small packs (₩3,000–4,000 range), which looked great to grab as snacks haha.

Up above, sample thank-you boxes were displayed by size (2-piece ₩3,000 / 3-piece ₩4,000 / 4-piece ₩5,000, etc). This would be perfect for anyone preparing thank-you gifts for a wedding or first birthday party, comparing the real thing in person haha. I looked into thank-you rice cakes after my own wedding, and if I'd known about this place earlier, I think I would've ordered from here 🥲 The prices aren't a burden and the packaging is upscale too.
The 20-piece omegi-tteok gift box for 22,000 won
Since my mom was visiting, I packed a 20-piece box of omegi-tteok for us to eat together, and since nationwide delivery including shipping is possible, this would also be great to order and share with family, relatives, or coworkers!
When I went to pick it up, they brought the rice cake out from the back. The moment I saw it, I thought the box looked so upscale it would be perfect for gifting 😆 All the rice cakes were individually wrapped and arranged neatly by type, which made me even happier haha.
How to freeze and thaw omegi-tteok
The paper pamphlet has very detailed instructions on how to store the rice cakes so they taste their best. As soon as you receive them, take them out of the box and spread them out in the freezer to flash-freeze! The owner kindly explained that depending on how fast the rice cakes freeze, they may turn out hard or soft when thawed later ‼️ (★ Storing in the fridge or a kimchi fridge is absolutely forbidden, as it makes the rice cakes hard!) They said the chewiest way to eat frozen rice cakes is to take them out of the freezer and let them thaw naturally at room temperature within 2 hours.
Back home, my mom, my husband, and I unboxed the rice cakes together ‼️ Individually wrapped and packaged so nicely — I really don't think there's a better gift... 👍🏻👍🏻
Tasting red bean, tangerine and black sesame omegi-tteok
We decided to taste just a few and put the rest straight in the freezer! We tried three first — red bean omegi-tteok, tangerine omegi-tteok, and black sesame omegi-tteok — and the rice cake itself was really~~~ soft and chewy ㅠㅜ The red bean filling wasn't too sweet, generously packed in without being overwhelming, and it was really perfect as a snack 👍🏻 Everyone said the rice cake was delicious, which made me proud haha.
